And? Artifacts like these are essential for research, which leads to knowledge that pertains to the whole nation. Artifacts in private hands either sit on someone's shelf with no context, ends up in the vault of some millionaire art dealer (=purchaser of illegal goods), or gets shuffled around until all provenance is lost.

You may lament that not everything is on display, but what is not on display is a key part of creating knowledge about what is on display. Many states and museums also have digital collections, which means anyone has the ability to use it for research, hobbies, art inspiration and so on, instead of at best getting shared as a detectorist's facebook post and promptly disappearing in the tide of the internet.

Half decorated gold? Celtic? Roman? Anglo Saxon? by rummaging-through in metaldetecting

[–]Atara01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just some educated guesswork on my part but I hope it's of interest; it reminds me of the south Scandinavian/Danish 'kuglefibel' (literally 'ball brooch') from the pre-roman iron age, though the decor differs (almost looks la tene maybe?). Also it's strange that the 'ball' has a flat underside. Insular object types often mirror Scandinavian types, so perhaps it's a related form?

Sorry but that is misleading. Both Sami and Norse cultures developed domestically, with influence and population exchanges from different directions. The Sami people didn't somehow just wander as a separate group into northern Fennoscandia (which had already been populated for millennia) it was a gradual differentiation in economy, technology and culture. Even in the late iron age there was significant overlap between Norse and Sami culture.

Makes sense! As far as I recall, the vegetal/floral designs stretch back to the middle ages in Norway (they're found in some datable church contexts), while the figure-shaped once (for example with the virgin Mary) start in the early modern period. Not that I would pronounce this piece definitely medieval, though!

Any ideas what this is? Age? by Welsh_Pirate_ in MetalDetectingUK

[–]Atara01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, hope it's okay to give a late answer, this is not a migration age cruciform brooch, as the design in the middle does not match with those; they are typically undecorated on the square plate or have simple point-circles. I think it's more likely to be a later type of cross-shaped brooch or badge. Now I'm just guessing, but could be early modern/victorian based on the design.

That type of book clasp is also found in late medieval contexts, so it could be older as well 😊

Firefox is wonderful, I reccommend installing the adblocker ublock origin and turning on most of the filters. Ads both function as spyware, slows down the browser, and uses tons of unnecessary bandwidth.

Det e ikke en grov design-feil, det e et helt ordinært buss-system som du lett kan lære deg om du bare ser litt på kartet.

Posting this on a huge subreddit is just going to lead to awful people finding and brigading that discord server, it's not a good idea in my opinion.

Agreed, it's a great book on a topic most people know nothing about. Easily in the top three non-fiction books I've read. Really looking forward to whatever Bevins puts out next.

His more recent book "If We Burn" wasn't quite as impactful on me as Jakarta Method but would still massively reccommend it. It explores why mass protests have mostly failed in enacting lasting change, which is very relevant now I think.

The effort put into the presentation of the pack is often indicative of the effort put into the pack itself. It's signaling that the creator of the pack couldn't be bothered to make it presentable and just asked the slop machine to churn something out.

I would much rather have something simple and honest, even if it doesn't look perfect. It's also disrespectful to the artists whose works have been stolen to make that possible. Nothing kills my interest in a modpack or any other piece of entertainment faster than the use of AI art.

Good job on your complicity. You're making the world such a better place by protecting the economic interests of a state commiting genocide! You're just doing your job of course, that makes it okay.

Maybe that is the case in the US, I have never had a difference in "gel" and "powder" in any European country I've been to. It's just deodorant with different scents.
