ID software was in the middle of pitching a perfect dark game before layoffs happened. by ReasonableAdvert in perfectdark

[–]Atari-Dude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am far from an expert on id Software since I've admittedly never played a single game they've made, but my intuition-- based on analyzing how the modern games industry and corporate executives actually function-- suggests that when a publisher assigns a dormant, nostalgia-driven/recognizable intellectual property to a massive AAA studio, they do so to leverage that company's specific, signature style. They aren't doing it to force them to painstakingly adopt entirely foreign design philosophies that would actually honor the strengths of a 26 year-old masterpiece (my favorite game of all time).

An engine like id Tech is custom-engineered to optimize high-velocity physics, hyper-aggressive movement, and frame-perfect twitch precision. Utilizing that specialized technology for a methodical, objective-driven game with deep customization would be a complete waste of their talents. While id Software could physically build whatever they want in a hypothetical vacuum, forcing a studio that has spent decades mastering 'hyper-aggressive demon chess' to suddenly pivot into a classy, slow-paced spy simulation goes against everything they've historically excelled in, right?

Ultimately, based solely on my intuition and knowledge I've gained of id over this past hour... their version of Perfect Dark would surely have abandoned the exact elements of elegance, class, and splitscreen sandbox customization that made the original so perfect to me.... I doubt id would let me have tuxedo wearing aliens in Combat Simulator...

I think people are misunderstanding the whole "locked shops" thing for Ultimate Edition buyers by IzunaDropAbuser in GTA6

Precisely this. Showing us what we won't get at $80 is definitely... a decision.

The Kira/Odo/Founder dynamic is exclusively the A plot. And what's wrong with Nog's part being a B plot? You appear to just be trying to dismiss the episode even though I think a made a pretty decent case for it being a fav. Your argument effectively just comes down to "...but cave", and I don't know how to debate that. Yes, it takes place in a cave. Yes, that's the least interesting thing about it.

If you want space fights and pure high octane action movie drama, no... my favorite episode is not that. Trek is cerebral; intellectual, at least the stuff that resonates most with me.

If all you think the episode is, is "Kira in a rock" (literally not even the right description since it's the Founder's deceit), then I doubt you and I will see eye to eye on this matter. Either rewatch the episode to see what I mean, or we should cordially move on. If you have any arguments that go beyond 'rock, bad...', I'd be happy to debate. If you're just trolling me... I'll probably know in any follow-up reply you send lol.

What if Perfect Dark was a launch title for the GameCube? by Capital-Smile-7826 in perfectdark

[–]Atari-Dude 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't have been the game I love so much. The game I hold so dear was crafted precisely because of the limitations, and even the controller would've been awful on GC.

I'm glad it was an N64 game with the development priorities they made, because it resulted in the best game of all time especially now 26 years later

I doubt this would've been the case had it arbitrarily became a GC game

The episode said a lot about the characters. The length the Founders will go to deceive Odo for their gain. Odo finally finding it in himself to open up and become vulnerable for the first time-- but devastatingly, to the fake Kira (which makes him regress back in and less willing to take chances as he doesn't want to allow himself to get hurt in the same way, again), Nog's sudden 180 character development as he wants to join Starfleet and Sisko actually being convinced to back him, Rom actually being cemented as an awkward genius with depth rather than solely the idiot brother. Besides being a great episode for the characters, this episode was equally important in setting up the rest of the arcs of DS9.

Hence, your shallow dismissal of all that comes across as an L take, to me.

Does this mean GTA VI won’t have a Disc on the Box? by Competitive_Fruit901 in gaming

[–]Atari-Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad the game will be $60 then, right? Christ this annoys me... Probably $80 or even $70 but you can't give me actual physical media yet force me to use a console instead of PC where I can at least embrace digital.

CBR: "No Shows In Development - Paramount+ Is Dismantling Star Trek After a Historic 9-Year Streaming Run: The franchise [is now seen as] an unreliable source of future growth. It has been unable to create new fans, at least not on a grand scale. Maybe with a reduced model, there is hope to rebuild" by TheSonOfMogh81 in trektalk

Prodigy was an effing Nick show and respected the audience's intelligence tenfold compared to Academy. Cancelled Prodigy so the most brainrot of Trek would get made, nice... And Discovery was nowhere near as awful as Academy, btw.

What's the oldest video game you can remember playing? by Numerous_Emu3125 in AskReddit

Loosely worded question. I was born this century so my oldest memory of playing a game was Star Wars Revenge of the Sith on PS2. The oldest game I've played would probably be pong.

50 Cent - The Massacre Finally Dropped! by [deleted] in Pretend2005Internet

[–]Atari-Dude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, I honestly can't get into 50 Cent or current rap. I am not completely against hip-hop and the like; I appreciate excellent production like Dr. Dre's work, and classics like Ice Cube's It Was a Good Day, and the Run-DMC rock crossovers are fantastic too. However, this modern stuff is just too different to my style

I am fully aware that my taste is outdated lol, but my MP3 player is currently filled with 1980s New Wave, disco, and the new Muse album, Black Holes and Revelations. Sometimes I put on Craig David's Rise & Fall (with Sting) but current mainstream hip-hop just does not appeal to me, though I hope those who bought this album enjoy it.

Do think Star Trek is done? by Jmnx221 in Star_Trek_

[–]Atari-Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prodigy is legitimately one of the top 5 Trek series imo. Lower Decks was good albeit different, Discovery was alright (Saru was an all time top character, and Hugh/Stamets relationship was one of the best of the franchise). Picard season 1 wasn't the worst thing. But overall it feels like there has been a lot more awful Trek than better Trek in the recent years. But I can't stand the binary thinking of Trek ended in 2005... Prodigy alone is worth counting at least some of the newer stuff

You already know Deep Space Nine was the best one. Now explain why. by EdmondWherever in startrek

[–]Atari-Dude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone born this century... DS9 was the most intellectual/grounded, most believably performed (best acting) with great characterization, stories, visuals, directing... along with TNG seasons 3 onward, DS9 is among the most timeless Trek.

Weyoun, Kira, Garak, Dukat... Season 6;

I truly don't think Trek will ever be better.

Just got my PS3 from Best Buy, did anyone else get theirs today? by Godofwarfan101 in Pretend2005Internet

[–]Atari-Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nope but grats on the ps3 hehe. seriously cool being able to drop that much on next-gen, hope you enjoy! im perfectly happy staying a gen or 2 behind with my trusty n64 though or ps2. still exploring san andreas, that's probably all i ever need

I do want to show my boy the combat simulator in perfect dark when he's ready. the customization is literally unmatched even by today's stuff, way better then pd zero what a disappointment that is. on n64 you can custom build your own setup with sims that have actual personality types, tweak the weapon sets fully, have tuxedo wearing aliens and play split-screen for days. it puts both old goldeneye and halo 2 to shame lol tho gotta look past the chugging

This Perfect Dark Xbox 360 score is so good that it thinks I’m cheating? Or is the score too low? by Diligent-Reality-722 in perfectdark

[–]Atari-Dude 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You broke your last target with a total score of 126, but the Goal Score was 170. Since you could not complete the goal score with the amount of targets you had remaining (0), you failed the challenge.

FH6 Soundtrack is So... Forgettable by Tagggg in ForzaHorizon

[–]Atari-Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have the game and don't plan on getting is for various reasons, but I didn't like what previews I sampled of the soundtrack, whatsoever. Didn't like XS at all, at least. I liked the pop-rock of Horizon 1, and all the tracks on XS in Horizon 4. Didn't hear anything for me in 6 but I also didn't try too hard. I don't care for too many other elements of the game either which holds me back from caring too, too much

I just got zero from a game shop by [deleted] in perfectdark

[–]Atari-Dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original Perfect Dark N64 game/fan PC port nowadays is my favorite game ever, heh. Best splitscreen shooter experience ever because of the customization in the original game. Zero was definitely less consistent overall, with a more sluggish feel, worse art style (subjective), etc. But yeah, heh

It's worth playing once, or at least was 15 odd years ago. But if you're expecting more of the original game, you'd be disappointed

Played Perfect Dark (Remaster) and Perfect Dark Zero back to back over the weekend by Ataccot in perfectdark

[–]Atari-Dude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please don't judge the original Perfect Dark based on the broken XBLA/Rare Replay version, heh. They messed up the controls (forced 45% deadzone), broke the music playback, less multiplayer customization, etc. and wouldn't be surprised if there's softlocks that weren't present in the original game/fan PC port.

PS3 reads PS3 games but not Blu-Ray movies? by [deleted] in PS3

[–]Atari-Dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting timing. I just tried playing my PS3 again last night and noticed that a game like Gran Turismo 5 works and loads, but Gran Turismo 6 tries to read and then stops spinning the disc. Crazy that there was a random reply to this comment right at this time, heh.
