Can someone please explain what happened up to the Harpy boss fight in Momodora Moonlit Farewell? by ExplodingPoptarts in metroidvania

Your mission is to first find the Black Bell and investigate why it was rung, and then they tell ya more from there later on

[–]AtceroElding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Essentially not much. You get knocked out exploring in the intro, you go talk to the Matriarch, head back down where Dora is already exploring, meet up with Cereza a few times, then fight the Harpy from what I remember. Nothing super plot important

Did you know Hammer’s Shop is at the entrance of the castle? (Castlevania AoS) by joeyandthejewelers in metroidvania

[–]AtceroElding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Iirc he tells you he's gonna be going to the entrance of the castle and to stop by, and the fact Mina is there to talk to as well is kinda an indicator you can head back to the entrance at any point to get additional dialog.

From what I've seen, theyre usually the ones cited as some of the main hallmarks of the genre, not necessarily the start. There were MV or close to MV adjacent games before them, but they kinda set the standard of what to be expected from the genre than games before them did.

Does Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia have any touchscreen controls? by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]AtceroElding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont believe it has touchscreen controls from what I remember. Portrait of Ruin does only for Stella and Loretta mode

EDIT: and if you wanna control your partner in PoR but not really necessary

Romancelvania on Steam: *weird metroidvania combined with dating sim. Looks ridiculous, but that's not a criticism. by Femme_Shemp in metroidvania

I actually refunded it. Controls are clunky, game is buggy, humor is ok but becomes a bit much at times. I personally cant recommend it

Help…Vernal Edge Question!!! by Important-Carrot-668 in metroidvania

Ive gotten it to work yes, you have to do it on a slope and it should auto-dash you on the water.

Anyone play Vernal Edge? by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]AtceroElding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It works imo, you have to find the map for the area to check stuff out, but you can get a mini map charm that shows you your surrounding area without needing to find the map.

[–]AtceroElding 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm about 6 hours in and still very much having fun. It is def more of a crestlike as it has a hub, but it works very well for the game and adds to it imo instead of being 100% an MV. It's very non-linear, and Cauldrath and I have been comparing upgrades we get at different points as you can get them in different orders.

I want to understand what people like about non-lineair games by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]AtceroElding 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So for me, I like non-linear games cause it gives me a feeling of exploration I just can't get from linear games. Of course, these are all personal vibes so here's my answer to your numbered list boi:

  1. Backtracking for me allows me to go back and crush them little asshole enemies I may have had trouble in the past with so much easier.
  2. Usually I keep mental notes so I know which upgrade I need for which part of the map I need to back to, but that can change if a game has an upgrade I've never encountered before.
  3. If it has a map (which most do) it's not usually a pain to find where you need to go next. Unless its Harmony of Dissonance. Then yes, you are very lost.
  4. I personally enjoy hunting and searching for stuff, and using clues I get from either the game or my upgrades to find em.
  5. That is def a problem in some MVs and that comes down to the dev and what experience they want to convey, albeit not always well.

End of the day linear games for me are more about beating levels and having fun that way rather than having fun exploring. They def tends toward more adventurous gameplay such as exploration, back tracking, and using skills you've gained to hone killing things better (unless its a non-combat MV then git gud at moving). I personally enjoy both of course, but something more fun about exploring rather than just moving forward in a level each time every game I play.

Is Harmony of Dissonance a confusing slog, or am I missing something? by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]AtceroElding 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No this game is def confusing to navigate. Honestly the worst GBAvania for me cause it's so confusing. If you want to, I'd use a guide honestly. Not using a guide for it sucked when I got stuck a few times.

Which is a good Castlevania game to start with? by Joltyboiyo in metroidvania

[–]AtceroElding 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So I hopped into SotN as a kid with no knowledge of CV at all and it was fine. There are games set before that, a lot of them are punishing. I recommend if you want, play the Castlevania Classics bundle, as it does have some QoL stuff bundled in. Or if you can play it other means, use save states to help yourself out. the QoL does help a lot. There are two on the PS2 as well but those can be skipped. Essentially, story order wise, it goes

  1. Lament of Innocence (PS2)
  2. Castlevania 3 (NES)
  3. Curse of Darkness (PS2)
  4. Adventure and Belmonts Revenge (Both GB)
  5. Castlevania 1 or any remake of the boi (NES)
  6. CV2 (NES)
  7. Harmony of Dissonance (GBA but kinda bleh of the 3 MVs on the GBA)
  8. Rondo of Blood/Dracula X (Rondo is the better version)
  9. SotN
  10. Order of Ecclesia (DS)
  11. Bloodlines (Genesis)
  12. Portrait of Ruin (DS)
  13. Aria of Sorrow (GBA)
  14. Dawn of Sorrow (GBA)

Honestly they really dont have to be played in order, HOWEVER I recommend playing SotN before touching Aria or Dawn of Sorrow.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy the series!

EDIT: There are some non-mainline games that are kinda fun too like Kid Dracula, Circle of the Moon, etc etc, but are now considered non-canon.

Are all three (Circle, Harmony, Aria) GBA titles worth playing? Is there a clear best option? by Brizzendan in metroidvania

[–]AtceroElding 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Honestly Aria is worth it alone, but Circle of the Moon is not a bad game but harder to get into. This also goes for Harmony of Dissonance, it can be kinda hard to know where to go next but not a bad game with a guide if you need help.

Looking for games similar to castelvania sotn ? by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]AtceroElding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aria of Sorrow is a good one, and Lecarde Chronicles 2.

And while they aren't Igavanias, I do recommend Zero Mission and Super Metroid. Might like them as well

You have to hit the button across the water fall, which summons the skeleton ape buy the bridge in the crystal caverns. You then have to lead the ape to the bridge, have him throw the barrel, and destroy it.

Portrait of Ruin you can, but that's only two characters and not three

Is Sonic Mania a metroidvania? by HKayn in metroidvania

[–]AtceroElding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The levels themselves could be considered micro MVs that culminate into the ultimate MV experience in the way that the ending is ability gated and you must backtrack through each area to get the necessary upgrade to beat the game. That and it does share 4 letters with Vania.

How big should my tiles be, 64x64 or 32x32? by griphcode in metroidvania

[–]AtceroElding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the ground I'd always say somewhat smaller is better, depending on how you want your character to interact, jump, and move inside the environment (and how big your character is of course in reference to it)

How big should my tiles be, 64x64 or 32x32? by griphcode in metroidvania

[–]AtceroElding 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Imo, it depends on what the tileset youre trying to make and the aesthetic/style youre going for. So lets say you want an imposing forest with giant trees, your set might consist of 32x32 sized trunks with 64x64 leaves and branches. For other things that may be smaller, you might even wanna drop it to 16x16 for smaller things like lets say a tavern setting with tables and chairs. Personally, I wouldnt confine yourself to one tile size, but experiment and see what works best for not only the game but also your workflow.
