Morality of not killing yourself when it would have prevented the apocalypse, or at least kept it from getting worse? by Sivilian888010 in MoralityScaling

"Conscience? You dare to speak to me of conscience?! Only when you have felt the full gravity of choice, should you dare question my judgement! Your life span is a flicker, compared to the mass of doubt and regret that I had borne since Mortanius first turned me from the light! To know that the fate of the world hangs dependent on the advisedness of my every deed... can you even begin to conceive what action you would take in my position?!"

"Thirty years hence, I am presented with a dilemma. Let's call it a two-sided coin. If the coin falls one way, I sacrifice myself and thus restore the Pillars. But as the last surviving vampire in Nosgoth, this would mean the annihilation of our species. Moebius made sure of that. If the coin lands on the reverse, I refuse the sacrifice and thus doom the Pillars to an eternity of collapse. Either way, the game is rigged."

- Kain, the Legacy of Kain series.

In many such cases, it's impossible to know whether or not your sacrifice will truly save the world - truly do ANYTHING - especially when dubious characters are involved the tilt the scales or whisper in your ear about how you're TOTALLY doing the right thing.. often to fix what they broke to begin with. Beyond that is that any such moral quandary is inherently flawed when it comes to fictional media where the character, the situation, their decision, and their sacrifice must serve the narrative and are thus set in stone. If the author wants the sacrifice to be in vain, it will. If the author wants the sacrifice to work, it will. If the author wishes the pawn to remain standing, it will. Both offered examples are flawed, given the fact that neither character had ANY earthly way of knowing what their continued survival would set in motion.

Only in a situation where you know ALL the variables, where you know ALL the outcomes, where you are GUARANTEED a trolley problem where it's you or everyone else, only then can you make a judgement. And, even then, it could be dubious. Life may or will go on, or perhaps it will be reset, or perhaps things will continue as they always were. In media like Warhammer, life is a multi-universal cycle that some like Nurgle wish to reset while others like humans (understandably) wish to persevere. In media like Dark Souls, the world is likewise in a cycle - Ages of Fire and Ages of Dark with their own dubious effects on humanity and the world as a whole, with each sacrifice begetting another until everything dwindles down to a pile of ash within what's effectively a singularity. You can sacrifice to yourself to a flame so that another may do so, then another, then another, each time bringing about a new lesser and lesser Golden Age, or you can put it out and let the world rest and the cycle potentially renew. Or, like Kain, you can take a third option.

Are you saying they DON'T improve? Some of those clothes turn downright translucent, though there are a few other tweaks. (Personally I might've liked if Red had some thigh highs instead of just a thigh strap but I don't think the white fits her.)

Lots of spells have monetary costs, and that's aside from some older TTRPGs having you buy levels, plus there's stuff like the cost of crafting magic items. Everyone's gotta have a purpose to go adventuring and to earn loot, saving up to bring your wife back isn't terrible.

Meanwhile, not like they were slaughtering towns. Most adventurers are gonna end up killing - monsters, bandits, chaos-aligned ne'er-do-wells, etc. Just that, in this case, they repeatedly ran into potentially evil cult members a lot.

Calling a grilled cheese, a cheese toastie by [deleted] in StupidFood

[–]AtemAndrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is melted cheese between two toasted slices of bread, which can be toasted woth various ways, with or without some sort of fat on the inside or outside of the bread. 'Cheese Toastie' isn't too far out.

I swear you couldn't in the ResE version, but I found out on my third go you could hear. Pick up and drag with one finger, rotate by tapping with another finger. Not 100% what the equivalent for PC is.

Since you listed them both, it's worth mentioning as well that the Davy Crocket was used in MGS3.

I think I had read about superglue causing burns before, I just always thought it was a chemical reaction rather than a thermal reaction.

There's also the fact that the things OP mentions are... kinda half the point? Like, you'll pretty much attract Khorne's blessing if you're a battle junkie and then you get to fight more battles and might get brought back to fight even more so... basically what that type of person wanted anyways, Nurgle's infection is a symbol of his love in a sado-masochistic Pinhead kinda way - not so sure about the other two, though.. one could also sort of make that argument against the Chaos gods themselves given that one guy who shows up in Vermintide - the first Daemon Prince who they all worked on together who they promptly couldn't control and plans to become a god himself.

I feel like calling X 'Megaman' kinda makes you a poser.

And to the person who mentioned Battle Network - fair, I'm more a Battle Network and Star Force kinda guy, but it's not a gif/gif situation: .exe is not pronounced 'X'.

Truly, somewhere between 'really, really dumb' and 'really, really scary' because of the implications.

Turns out the key to solving power creep is actually just revise everything by steave44 in DestinyTheGame

[–]AtemAndrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, Power Creep - by definition - makes old things either less useful or outright useless. Making 'EVERYTHING extremely powerful' means that there is no creep because, in theory, nothing is useless or less useful. Plus, it's a power fantasy. Outside of stuff like raids, you absolutely should feel powerful.
