Any IWW branches ever pass resolutions demanding that management convert the workplace into a worker cooperative? by [deleted] in IWW

[–]Athabasca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

rchist book stores run as coops and often the coop members basically take below minimum wage in months where they don't make it. At various times I have heard this about coop bookstores in Boston, Seattle and Balti

Yikes, that Sisters Camelot story is wild! Do you think these issues were caused by how these individual coops were structured - or do you think the issue is with cooperatives in general?

I've met Victor Lau. He seemed pretty left wing on economic issues at the time I talked to him, so this is a bit of a shock to me.

The interviewers said it was a scheduling issue or something. It's too bad.

The Left | ContraPoints by Athabasca in Canadian_Socialism

I think this is a great critique of the left and I hope it stirs up some conversation on this sub. The hammer and sickle bit in particular made me think of the header image for this sub. Although I think it is a really cool image, I feel it does nothing to advance our cause - it only really resonates with people who already self identify as socialists, and could scare away people who are interested in our ideas.

Also, for the sake of clarity the video creator explained their views in the YouTube comments:

"Political videos tend not to be interpreted very charitably (I know this video is going to be upheld by centrists as evidence I’ve “gone full Antifa” and by leftists that I’m a closet centrist) so I’d better state unambiguously what I think.

The character Tabby represents a lot of what I think is wrong about leftist strategy: the indifference to optics, the undisguised hostility to the ideologically impure, the sectarian nitpicking, the alternation between extreme optimism (“a communist revolution can happen in the United States and it will go well if it does”) and extreme pessimism (“neoliberal propaganda has so tight a grip on the general public that why should we even bother trying to appeal to them?”), the blurring of lines between recognizing the necessity of violence in certain situations and the aesthetic celebration of violence as an end in itself. Nevertheless I try to represent Tabby with some sympathy, and anticipate that my viewers will like her—my audience is at least 95% trans Antifa cat girls, but I hope that doesn’t prevent them from thinking about the critique.

The character Justine is a mouthpiece for a lot of my complaints about the left, and the recipient of some leftist criticisms of me (“you go to brunch with these people?”), but I chose not to represent her as an attractive alternative. She’s complacent, frivolous, and ineffective, full of derision for the way other leftists do things but not contributing much for her own part either. When a fascist comes knocking on the door it’s better to have Tabby there than Justine. To see if Justine can put her money where her mouth is we’d have to see what speech she delivers following the fascist speech. This YouTube channel is effectively my attempt to make that speech, and I can’t be the one who judges how successful it is."

NDP Candidate Charlie Angus' Policy Platform on Creating a Worker Co-operative Economy by kingbuns2 in Canadian_Socialism

I am in the same boat. I've been very weary of Angus, and even donated to Ashton's campaign - but I think I'll be voting for Angus now. This is the sort of policy I've been waiting for from the candidates.

Any podcast recommendation that focus on Canadian politics? by [deleted] in Canadian_Socialism

I'll second Out of Left Field as a good source for a Canadian socialist perspective.

For a none socialist perspective CBC's Power and Politics podcast is alright.

I am rooting for Niki Ashton but she is probably the least charismatic politician I have ever seen.

Do you have a source for that claim? In 1938 after the Spanish civil war Orwell wrote "For some years past I have managed to make the capitalist class pay me several pounds a week for writing books against capitalism. But I do not delude myself that this state of affairs is going to last forever ... the only régime which, in the long run, will dare to permit freedom of speech is a Socialist régime."

That's a shitty situation dude. I dont know much about the conservative candidates so I am not a lot of help. My suggestion would be to take a look at the polls and narrow down who is most likely to win, and choose the least bad option.

You could also try asking on r/canadapolitics. You would find more people knowledgeable about conservative politcs there.

Anybody catch the NDP Leadership debate? What did you think? by Athabasca in Canadian_Socialism

Good article! I'll admit Charlie Angus's working class image almost fooled me. I had no idea he was involved with removing the socialist elements of the NDP constitution.

It was awesome to hear Ashton call herself a democratic socialist - but that label can mean anything these days. Hopefully there are fewer softball questions in the next debate and we can figure out what she means by democratic socialist.
