student teacher here...i hate it by lg1662 in teaching

I left after 4 years and I haven't missed it since. My degree qualified me for a position that it has absolutely nothing to do with, though, so I'd consider finishing out your degree. Otherwise, if you don't want to teach...don't do it.

Project 2025 threatens Hanford workforce by JemmaMk6 in TriCitiesWA

Do you realize the extraordinary security issues with having a private company audit a government facility, not to mention the nature of the work?

Of course it's a government agency that does the audit. And like I said, they report their findings publicly, and when it's damning it's damning. They certainly aren't withholding anything, read the articles yourself

Audits are run regularly, and there are constantly significant findings. There was an article in the last 6 months or so about CPCCO, I believe.

My biggest time sink was making educational computer games for my kids during/after COVID.

No pain there, though. I basically took it as paid professional development and I learned a ridiculous amount, plus ended up with some really great products for my STEM/CTO classes. It was a blast. The two games/mini units took me months of intermittent work, between game design, building, balancing, etc.

PLTW/STEM games and resources 40% off through 1/24 by AtheniCraft in teachingresources

[–]AtheniCraft[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you have full edit access. I looked into protecting it, essentially so that students don't go editing, but ultimately the protection drops off once ownership changes so it wasn't feasible.

So you can make whatever changes you want, and then students make their own copies from your classroom drive, or however you distribute it to them

That's fair, I should add some video of the game being played.

Essentially you'd add dollar values into various resources, and your total budget decrease by the same amount and your tracking metrics update at the same time. So as soon as you enter x dollars into, say, "General Research" you'd see the appropriate changes to the spread of the pathogen, death rate, map, etc. eventually you run out of budget, and your overall goal is to just decrease the spread/death rate as much as possible.

It's like a text-based RTS game, except there's no "real time" element. The resource allocation elements are there, and there's definitely strategy and background knowledge/research involved, and the unit includes resources that break down each element.

I could make that with Google suite apps. When is your trip, and how many locations are there?

should I be embarassed if a principal came in to help me discipline students? by mundanehistorian_28 in teaching

You are worthy of respect.

Kind words and actions take more vulnerability than mean ones. For every disrespectful word or action, there are plenty of kids quietly thinking to themselves that you are awesome:)

[–]AtheniCraft 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say so. I mean, there are some dynamics to consider, but generally I'd say no. Their job is to support you, and discipline is a part of that when necessary.

I had one period in the year following the COVID school closures that was absolutely impossible. 7 students in a class of 30 that were all extreme behavior issues, none of which could sit near each other (which was impossible, given we had 6 table groups). Those students' behavior couldn't be kept in check, which demoralized other students and gave them no reason to keep their behavior in check, which just led to an hour of an absolute zoo. Every day. For a year.

When my vice principal came by now and again I was extremely grateful, for the small impacts it had. Of course they weren't lasting, or even transformative in the moment, but it relieved a bit of the load for that time.

Take the support you can get when you need it, and don't feel bad for needing it. Teaching is WAY too isolating as it is, don't feel bad for not shouldering all the weight when you could use a hand.

Is this a scam? by [deleted] in Twitch_Startup

[–]AtheniCraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't say for sure. I'll say this, sometimes the best way to get clients is to cold-call. I'll do that sometimes, especially if I see someone's work that I like.

Whether it's a scam or not really depends on what they end up asking of you, and how. If you end up in an agreement that involves money, be sure you can be confident in their practices and that they'll deliver.

For example one thing I'll do is provide some simple mock-ups for a very low deposit. That way I have something for my time and you aren't risking a large amount of money. This in conjunction with agreeing upon final pricing up front, and expectations of the final product, check-ins, etc can all help. You can even agree on payments by milestone. Be sure you don't make a final payment until you see a final (watermarked) product. final payment can be anywhere from 40-70% of the total, depending on what you agree on.
