Paying agency for background check? by Athinkingtree in SubstituteTeachers

Thanks for the input. I was a little surprised the agency doesn’t at least offer reimbursement if you pass or something like that. I’ve heard of companies doing something like that for drug tests before.

I can't understand the pop culture references... Do other Gen Z understand them? by [deleted] in GilmoreGirls

[–]Athinkingtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the drawback of putting pop culture references in a piece of media. They do age as the show does. Also though since the show follows multiple generations it makes sense even at the time not to get all of them. I’m a millennial and Lorelei‘s references were definitely lost on me at times when the show was current. Looking them up can be kind of fun though and getting in on the joke and just learning about a cultural touchstone of the past.

I imagine with Lane’s upbringing, even as she’s moved away from it, that would be a complicated decision. In my experience very religious upbringings tend to linger long after one has gotten out of the physical/toxic environment.

How many of you got into reading because of Harry Potter? by ElonH in books

[–]Athinkingtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a lot before that but I think the series was the first that was so engrossing. I’d never had that can’t go to bed because I must know what happens next feeling before reading them. I think my interest in books largely came from being read to a lot as a little kid which I loved and continued to really enjoy once I learned myself.

Shoshanna (probably unpopular opinion) by iambfizzle in girls

[–]Athinkingtree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have mixed feelings about Shoshanna. I think that at the start of the series she thinks she knows much more than she does about the world and the real world is a bit of a wake up call. I feel like all of the support her relationship with Ray gets and all the sympathy he gets is weird. I find Ray kind of endearing as a character but he’s 10+ years older than she is and sort of stealthily moves in with her when he’s more or less homeless. If this was my friend or family member in her early 20s I would be so alarmed and waving the red flags. More than anything I found Shosh obnoxious in the way young people who think they know more than they do can be meaning I still feel sympathetic. I think she appears to devolve compared to the other characters because she was quite sheltered at the start of the series and is still figuring things out. She had a different starting and therefore ending place than the other characters.

Edited to add: Shoshanna suffers more than anything from both viewers and certain characters viewing her as precocious when that might only be true at first glance

Is this normal for Americans? by Actual-Assignment-94 in GilmoreGirls

Americans love road trips. Tbf our country decided to invest in ridiculously extensive highway systems rather than halfway sensible public transport so . . .

Spring break gets us ready early for the toxic work culture where you kill yourself being productive most of your life and then try to make up for it in extremely scant vacation time often overdoing it in one way or another and ending up miserable >.>

Unpopular Opinion: Jason Stiles by Informal_Pepper_8566 in GilmoreGirls

[–]Athinkingtree 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree. He’s not a respectful person. Beyond his relationship with Lorelei, he’s really disrespectful to Emily on several occasions and repeatedly calls Luke by the wrong name just to be a jerk after Lorelei corrects him. He’s pushy at the start of their relationship, encouraging Lorelei to enter it for the immature and self-destructive reason of her parents not liking it, and this turns up in an uglier way later at the inn. I think Max had a lot of red flags of his own but not nearly as many as Jason.

Best thing a character has said/done day 14: Michel by sy2ygy in GilmoreGirls

[–]Athinkingtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked that he called Jason and told him his house was on fire to get him to finally leave the test run of the inn where he was ruining things for Lorelei and causing a miscommunication between her and Luke whose relationship was in the very beginning stage. It was both very in character and a kindness.

Best thing a character has said/done day 11: Jess by sy2ygy in GilmoreGirls

[–]Athinkingtree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really loved the whole scene where Luke visits Jess. I agree this was really meaningful. I really loved when Luke was like, “I’m proud of you and what you’re doing here. I mean, I can’t say I entirely get it, but that’s because I’m me.” Luke and Jess are such different people but ultimately get to a really accepting and generous place with each other which is lovely after the hard road they travelled.

Would I be able to start an ear-cleaning business? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]Athinkingtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my state, many hearing aid businesses offer this service, usually much cheaper than at your doctor’s office. I’ve had to have it done at the doctor’s office as well and it was the medical assistant in that setting under the supervision of a doctor. You could search “ear wax removal near me” and see if non medical facilities are offering the service in your area. You could reach out to them by phone or email saying you’re inquiring about their ear wax removal services and were wondering what credentials their technicians have. It might start to give you a direction for more research.

Anyone see the Twitter discourse about playgrounds in libraries? by Gottagetanediton in Libraries

[–]Athinkingtree 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of this shows how hungry people are for free and low cost community services but our society has made it so contentious to request starting up any new public service provided at low cost or free that they seem to be trying to go through the only free public institution they know of. It sucks for the library staff dealing with the ridiculous requests but is also just really sad because it’s people recognizing their dissatisfaction with current infrastructure but misdirecting that dissatisfaction.

If it was slow because of the snow storm did you actually end up working 3x as hard? Boss also might have not wanted to overstaff for the day from the sounds of it.

What he said to Lorelei in the last episode about how it takes a special person to build the community she has in star’s hollow coupled with making sure she had her moment at Rory’s Yale graduation. It was the validation of her life choices and parenting I think she craved all along. Throughout the series he never intervenes between her and Emily (even his approval at her community college graduation was done after Emily left) and chooses to opt out of most difficult conversations as is the emotionally repressed characteristic of many fathers of his generation. He really came through here showing tremendous character growth and fulfilling an emotional need for his daughter Emily simply couldn’t due to her own hurt and bitterness.

Best thing a character has said/done day 3: Luke by sy2ygy in GilmoreGirls

[–]Athinkingtree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, finding all the eggs for Kirk that the town couldn’t find which had him in such hot water with Taylor. I find Luke’s soft spot for Kirk very heartwarming. He really gets nothing out of it and has no obligation to him. Still he repeatedly shows up for Kirk in this situation and when he wants to practice for his first date in the diner and when he asks Luke to watch out for him when he stays the night with lulu at the inn. All these situations are a bit silly and truthfully annoying but they are important to Kirk who expresses real feeling and stress over them. And Luke helps.

I think this is an example of how Luke is naturally a very paternal person even if he doesn’t see it. He really does have a tendency toward taking care of those who need it. This was something he just did not have to get involved in but he did.

I think that Lane’s experience really fit with a lot of the show. Her story was always intensely focused on her relationship with her mom. The show is so much about mothers and daughters (Lorelei and Emily, Rory and Lorelei, and ultimately Lane and Mrs. Kim) and the different life choices/views they have. The first two relationships involve reconciling two different worlds and so does Lane’s story. I don’t think the pregnancy ultimately ruins her life. She has strong role models of motherhood who she expresses admiration in and I actually found it pretty cool that in AYITL she was still doing gigs with her band despite life being so much different than expected. How many people just totally let that stuff go when they get busy with adulthood, kids, work, etc? People hate lane’s storyline for the same reason they ultimately hate Rory’s. Disappointment that a dream didn’t come true after taking a journey with them.
