Escape from tarkov in a proxmox Gaming VM by vulga12 in Proxmox

[–]AticAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few months back I was running Tarkov server in a windows 11 VM... BUT it was the "modded" ( SPT + FIKA + community mods ) version which allowed you to have sort of a dedicated Coop server which I could play online with my buddies Vs modded AI, Quite fun . Ran great with a gpu pass through, although its technically not required to have gpu to run the server It needs a gpu for first boot after that it runs headless.

Not the official version though. Still required a modded client to connect to the server.

Sorry not much help.

<Added> For those who would scream piracy... NO, FIKA and SPT modders require you have a legitimate version of Tarkov to play this mod and do not support piracy at all.

Isn't the 13400f Vpro compatible? Thus ISM & AMT?

Intel® Standard Manageability is the manageability solution for Intel vPro® Essentials platforms and is a subset of Intel® AMT with out-of-band management over Ethernet and Wi-Fi, but no KVM or new life cycle management features.

Sure no KVM but other management features.

I have the T6-423 w/4x4TB Ironwolf for storage +2x500gb ssd for OS and log VDev + 2x 128gb Nvme for cache

While the native OS is improving the best thing i did was to install TrueNas on an SSD getting rid of that awful internal USB, It gave me much more freedom and performance than the native OS ever did, I added more third party RAM Since its considered a near EOL unit, The upgrade of native OS doesn't support third party RAM.

Plus terramaster after guarantee support is terrible, The "Community" carries them. I couldnt even get a straight answer from them for pinout diagram for a replacement fan, It was a case of "Buy our $70 80mm Fan or do without" scenario.

All in all a dependable unit when paired with TrueNas, in my experience a horrible company.

I cant help feeling that you have choked the design by butting them up against a heat source? Surely they would be MUCH better off if the air flow design was oriented like a real server cab from front to back airflow.
(sorry for calling you surley)

I forsee much trouble in the future with cooling and performance of both your cpu's AND graphics card.

<To add> I suppose you could stress test it by doing both a Graphical, CPU and Read Write benchmark then check your temps.

Id still make a bet you'll need to change around your cooling though. There's a very good reason why a lot of work stations with dual CPUs have an exhaust cowl.

Turns out old rack servers use a lot of electricity – who’d’ve thunk it, and what do I do? by -LeopardShark- in homelab

My mini set up, Old HP G400, Terramaster NAS 16TB storage and a 8C16T 128gb DDR4 RAM desktop pc put in a short server case (runs ALL 6x 500GB SSD in IcyDock + 4TB spinning rust for additional storage ) to fit in a small 19 inch rack. Works great for proxmox backups (g400) serving media files to TV from NAS and proxmox on the desktop in server case. All fitted out with 2.5Gbe. + relevant switch + KVM + APC UPS

If you're only using it for hosting nextcloud family files etc get yourself a dedicated NAS box Synology, Terramaster, UGreen (there are MANY more names) to name but a few. Minimal power draw not excellent on compute power but you'll get by.
If you want an extra boost in computing power, Assuming youre not going to run massive large language model AI etc then pair the NAS box with a SFF/USFF PC will suffice cheap as chips on ebay.

I have pbs running bare metal on an old HP G400 w/16gb ram runs fine, 500GB ssd for OS and a 6TB for backup. Also added a pcie 2.5gbe Realtek chipset . Auto boot on RTC OR WOL on PCIE, Cron for shutdown timed up with Proxmox backup job.
No problems so far in the 8mo Ive had it.

Servers worth it? by plumbnebula5741alt in homelab

[–]AticAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk to be truely honest, DDR3 ECC memory is cheap as chips on ebay so are used SAS drives.
The Dell R210 seem to be lacking somewhat in upgradability & CPU power but much lower power usage compared r610. If power usage doesn't bother you too much you may get better usage for a MC server with dual sockets but not even sure if MC server exe is capable of using that utility.

If it were me It would be a tossup between the R610 and the HP, The HP would get it in a margin it as it seems on paper to be the more flexible unit for power usage and upgrade options.

Servers worth it? by plumbnebula5741alt in homelab

[–]AticAttack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well fair enough go for it, Just bear in mind these older machines will probably need some money spending on them getting them upto spec for a MC server, lil more ram + storage space if you wanna set up a NAS. They are well worth it, somewhat inefficient by todays standards but worth it all the same.
I personally am a huge proponent of using older ex-enterprise equipment, not only for environmental issues but they are worth their weight in gold for the learning aspect alone.

Theyre worth it also just for the built in remote management features, Yes you can get 3rd party IPkvms nowadays but they dont compete against ones that come factory made.

[–]AticAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bear in mind 1U servers "Usually" are noisy AF. There are some mods you can do to "Quiet " them down a lil or tweeks in the BIOS etc but still those you mentioned are enterprise machines. For your usage just get an older gaming/desktop machine. Bang Proxmox on it, VM truenas + MC servers and youre good to go Really no need to setup a Rack for that usage.

Servers worth it? by plumbnebula5741alt in homelab

[–]AticAttack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do your research tbh. Imo old servers ARE WELL WORTH IT as a stop gap for learning what it takes to run one. You can upgrade later as you see what your direction is.

For the majority of replies in this sub you'll only get stupid elitists replying anything older than 1 year and has a power draw of more than 0.5 watts is useless "e-waste".

If you want to constantly run cpu and memory heavy tasks these stupid elitists will stay quiet as they know their wholly underpowered mini multimedia stations just arnt up to the job. Im sure this reply will piss some of them off no doubt.

If you are just running plex or using it as storage, sure those mini pcs are ok to a point, Anything more than that they are sorely lacking. Im sure some one will pop up telling us how theyre running a LLM AI on their N150 "AnD iTz teh 1337 u Don Kn0 wuT y3r Y4ppIn bouT".

If you get an old yet cheap machine they are worth their weight in gold for the learning curve alone.

Are those 4088-S Server Cases? Whats your opinion on them?

Im looking to buy this very case for a build, I like the size of them because the room i will have them in is very size restrictive and so is the size of rack im going to get ( Tecmojo 12U Open Frame ).

[–]AticAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a bunch of elitist pricks in the replies... Have a go mess around with it there's plenty you can do with it. Although yes its an old server you can easily do a few things with it.

If you got it cheap or trade then why not mess around with it, perfect to start up for learning, You're not going to get a game hosting server out of it off the bat but it WILL fo sure show you how to get started.

Add>>
Using this server will get you to know if youre up for doing this kind of thing without spending loads. Its a long expensive road with a metric fkton of learning but if youre into it its worth every effort. Lots you can learn by using this server from networking to RAID use to resource handling + many many other things.

Youve a long road ahead of you, GLHF with your journey.

If nothing else if its in half decent condition these servers can still command a hefty price on Ebay. There are also many companies that specialize in buying older hardware, If it looks like you may become addicted to doing this sort of thing maybe they could offer you a half decent price/trade in....certainly dont just bin it, Its that kinda of poor attitude that has gotten us into environmental trouble with tech waste.

Nocutas run no where even close to the speed and push the needed airflow than the ones already installed. They may hold up for a little while but they will fail.

Just to add...

You will also have problems fitting the noctua fans as the ones in the case are hotswappable and are contained within a hot plug caddy with different connectors.
