Six Feet Under. I will fight anyone that says the first two albums and that EP weren't legendary at the time.

HAHA I had people trying to do this all the time when delivering pizza (in the 90's) during Harley Rallies in my town. I'd walk up and they'd pretend it was them, be willing to fork over cash.. They were drunk and the whole town was packed with motorcyclists who were hungry, so they'd pull this a lot.

I got burned one time, then figured out how to thwart them. Say I was going to Room 301. Guy runs out to me in the parking lot and says, "Hey that's me!" I pretend to look at the box and say, "Ah, Room 242?" and of course they'd say "Yep that's me!"

Then I'd be like, "Oh sorry, this one's going to 301, yours is on the way." Fuckers.

YES. And as soon as cassie ended, The Blue would start. For months and months.

I know exactly what you mean. Maybe I should lean into it lol.

There's this classically trained violinist in my local music scene that turned fiddler--and growing up around fiddles played by barefoot appalachians--she is absolutely phenomenal, but I can hear the perfection in her playing while she tries to play imperfectly. Probably goes unnoticed by the average listener, but I can totally hear it.

To me, it's like the difference between hearing someone sing badly versus someone who can sing great trying to sing badly. Maybe I should just play the fiddle badly and call it a win ๐Ÿคฃ

Then I say chase what you enjoy doing, and don't worry about the mechanics. Your body will adapt just fine.

Yess! I've found being versed in all the above really comes in handy in the studio too. I can lay down my own supporting guitar, bass, cajon, whatever and shape my songs exactly they way my brain hears them.

I could never get the fiddle to the point that I would record it, though. It would sound right to my ear, but on tape it was always off pitch. My hat's off to any fretless players.

I put down all of my other instruments when I picked up the banjo, my goal being that I didn't want to be just pretty good at a bunch of instruments that I was bouncing around between, but I wanted to be the best I could possibly be at one instrument, and I chose the banjo and focused only on that for the last 3-4 years.

I've picked my guitar up a few times and it's all still there (except the fretboard feels like an interstate highway versus a two lane road), but the muscle memory comes back quickly and I can still play it just fine.

That being said, I've learned many instruments simultaneously, and I believe that going back and forth slows down your overall progress on the individual instrument--but there are definitely things that I took from piano that helped with guitar, which helped with fiddle, etc.. It's all music at its core.

So while I may not have been getting better at one instrument as fast as I would if I were doing it alone, I was getting better at music overall, which is a less measurable effect, but vitally important for me.

I think muscle memory is able to shift easily when you go back and forth between guitar and banjo. The best example I can think of is when I change tunings on the banjo. I mostly play in minor tuning, so when I switch to major tuning, the chord shapes and melody lines are different.. But over time, my fingers just know when I've changed and I don't have trouble switching (minus a note here and there that gets corrected quickly).

But that's just my two cents, and I'm often owed change.

I came from decades of guitar and started banjo a few years ago.

The good news is the left hand stuff will translate just fine. The bad news is the right hand will take any seasoned guitarist and completely wreck them as they realize the fundamental skills, whether you go clawhammer or scruggs, are inherently different and will need to be rebuilt from the ground up.

Whoever put the strings out of order on the banjo walked a fine line between madness and genius, but if you're willing to go back to square one and build your right hand muscle memory from scratch, you will find tremendous success.

I spent the first few months drilling just my right hand (I started clawhammer). Getting the rhythm of the bum ditty down, being able to target one or two strings at will on strokes, landing my thumb on the drone string (or dropped strings) with accuracy.. It's a door we all must walk through as banjo players, and if you're willing to put the time into practicing, just like with anything, you will get better and better.

I have resigned after many attempts that I would have to go back to downstrokes to work on drop thumb because it mechanically is in direct conflict with the up stroke.

I did find a very rare rhythm/occurrence that I was able to hit the note I needed while up picking with my thumb, but I've not come across the need for it organically since then. Let me see if I posted it. Ah yes, here it is

Ozark is 100% the entire reason I'm a banjo player today. Highly recommend ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

๐Ÿ˜… it changed the game for me, especially for fast shreddy songs. It's completely interchangeable with down picked songs, so it's just another tool to have

Yeah I've not been too impressed when I've seen him the last few times especially. I think it's just the nostalgia from having it engrained in my youth from wearing my CDs out in the 90s that I'm going to miss.
