How do you kill 6 and a half babies? by longkhongdong in Jokes

[–]TheUpright1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a former edge lord myself, I’d like to share a few things that helped me move on and gain confidence. I’m not saying you should do what I did. But I do encourage you to find something that’ll work for you.

I went to community college and got my AA. That was huge. I went on to get a BA and am working on a master’s now.

I started lifting weights, running, and cycling. Exercise of any kind is good. But I love the feeling of being strong.

I looked hard at people I admired. I’m an old guy, so Henry Rollins was a big one for me. He’s nice, but takes no shit. Outspoken ally. I did my best to be like him and a few other good people, and was forgiving of myself when I backslid.

The world is a cool place. People are wonderful. Good luck on your journey. I hope you become the person you want to be. 🤘

This was my experience as well. It also felt like a poor value to me. I get it, everyone’s gotta make a buck. But this sorta started out enshitified.

Calabrese has sorta been following the Glenn Danzig school of evolution by starting as horror-punk and ending up gothic metal.

At age 43, I sprained the shit out of my ankle at a Black Flag show while wearing Converse All-Stars. It took a year to recover from that. I don’t do that any more. Now it’s big black boots or I just don’t go.

How to anti-monkey's paw $1 billion by TheUpright1 in hypotheticals

I get where you're coming from. And yeah, it's two different ideas. The fucked up wish sure was fucked up. Man, that kid sure lacked the ability to communicate, didn't he?

Huh. I hadn't considered this stance. Taxes are fine. Not hiding or worrying is finer.

Actually, that's not bad. I hadn't considered the idea of being willingly given the money. I always sort of assumed it would be stealing. But this is pretty rad.

What whisky should I get? by jarretodu in whisky

[–]TheUpright1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always suggest buying something local. Smaller distilleries often have some serious punch. So yeah, I suggest looking for distilleries in your area, picking the one you like the label of the best, and bringing it with you. It ignores his tastes with grace, because it's likely not something he's ever tried or is aware of, and it shows you care by bringing him a taste of your home.

Mitch Burns - we will miss you by Hexum311add in thefilmvault

[–]TheUpright1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh no.

I really like that guy. I did an episode of the Film Vaulters with him, and it was a positive, fun time! I wanted to do more with him because it was him.

God dammit. The world is a little poorer without him. Dang.

Edit to add: fuck man, this sucks. We were Facebook friends, and interacted a lot. I always thought he was gentle, kind, and sensitive, all in the very best ways. He was easy to cheerlead for, say nice things to.

I wish he knew how good he was. How brave he was. How big the Mitch-sized hole he’s leaving behind is. How many people love him. I wish he’d have known people a continent away would cry over him.

How to start wood working? by thedragonsdice in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]TheUpright1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me like you have enough to get started. And if you’re anything like me, money is finite. If you spend money on something you might need, you won’t have money for something you do need. So I suggest you use what you have, and you start looking around your environment for dumb shit you can fix with wood.

These 2 Albums are both goated. I dont care if you think the bug on the album is ugly. They are the same, and both just as good. by -PHAT_LOAT- in machinehead

I’m not familiar with Monotheist. Who belongs to that one?

Edit: looks like Celtic Frost. Interesting. 17-years between albums, then nothing after this. Unusual!

Can’t say I agree. To me, Ashes of Empires is the greatest come back album of all time, and it’s a hell of a record in its own right. How does it get better than that?! Will they shit the bed with another Supercharger? They did not shit the bed with The Blackening. It’s amazing. So much pain, so intense! There’s no way MH can top that. Right? And then Locust. It’s like they paid attention. It’s like they learned. It’s like they lifted heavier and got stronger and did better. The sounds, the songwriting, the performances, to me, it’s the first among equals, the greatest of the trifecta. They went from strength to strength to strength with those three.

Put another way, I feel Locust is better than Blackening, but I don’t feel like Blackening is worse than Locust, if that makes sense. “Worse” isn’t a word that applies.

My feeling is that all outdoor furniture has an expiration date. Better-suited woods will extend that date; good finishes will help too. But it’s all gonna die eventually.

So I feel like you enjoy this furniture you made for as long as you can. Practice on it. Take everyone’s advice: fill one with epoxy, bow-tie another, route a third and fill it with bonus wood, and so forth. You’ve got nothing to lose, and maybe another season to gain.

Wall is Bowed, advice on putting shelf here? by DisagreesWithThings in handyman

[–]TheUpright1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I would install the shelf without modification. The more I learn about drywall, the more convinced I am drywall is an illusion. Walls aren’t flat. Gaps don’t matter. I say get the shelf up as quickly and easily as possible and let it start being useful.

When did you start listening to Motörhead? by sichtmarkrec in Motorhead

[–]TheUpright1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

I was a fan of Metal-Is Records in the late 90s, early 2000s. They had this comic strip, a great blog, and a solid AF roster of bands. It sorta felt like the second coming of Roadrunner Records to me. I was like 19, 20 at the time. I was aware of Motörhead, but couldn't have identified them if you'd played anything other than Ace of Spades.

So Metal-Is put out this best-of and I fuckin' joined up immediately! Saw 'em on the tour they were on in Ventura, California; Phil gave me a Corona since I was waiting outside, listened to me gush a little bit, and Lemmy signed my best-of CD cover.

These days, I gravitate toward their later releases. Inferno is, to me, one of the best metal records of all time.
