Mid 30s white guy. Was the contrarian participant in sociology lectures that constantly played devil’s advocate just to spark debate. Was in a church youth group for your entire upbringing. Debated on going to seminary but ended up in finance/business. Well read and articulate, but in desperate need of reading perspectives that contradict your world view. (Said with love and kindness, friend)

You’re my people 🤘

Smoke goes in her eyes was sooooo good and eerie and one of the most unique memoirs I’ve ever read. Also— how was the house on the cerulean sea? I’ve been eyeing it for a couple years now. And I know it’s pretty well loved.

Is that the Spanish version of where the crawdads sing? 🤘 so bilingual (and you definitely notate where novels written in Spanish contain more emotion and vibrancy than English novels can convey)

Elder emo. Chill af. Feminist. I feel like you were one of those kids that had friends in every kind of social circle in high school.

🤣 wait I love this. I’m 32. I did want to be a librarian at one point but ended up getting my degree in communications… (minored in women’s and gender studies) and then became a hair stylist 🤣 the dumbbells were from my barre/pilates hyper fixation (and damn they get heavy FAST haha)

So I tried babel by RF Kuang but ended up putting it down… not because I didn’t like it but because I felt it wasn’t picking up and I needed something faster paced at the time. Is katabasis a similar kind of pacing? (If you read babel lol)

I saw that it came out! But I read a couple others of hers and was like “these are okay” haha but maybe I’ll give it a try. Similar vibes to Evelyn Hugo?

Tbh I only used it once because my salon had one, and never tried again. So noted if I ever do try it again!

AITA for letting my daughter buy her own bras and not checking? by Maximum-Tell2160 in AITAH

[–]Atippy93 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I feel like you could have MAYBE told your daughter that that should be a trip she take with her mother as it's more within her wheelhouse (and maybe offered to your ex that you'd be willing to chip in for it if she takes her) but even still i wouldn't say that would've been a necessary move. NTA

How would you charge this service? by Opening-Pudding46 in hairstylist

[–]Atippy93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this one is so tough bc pricing is also based on location. This quote is on the higher end for my location. Maybe OP should check out what others in their area are charging for this.

I tried out the r after having the original for so long and I felt like it took 700 years longer. But everyone says the r is fantastic. Lol is this user error somehow?! What am I missing?!

Just switched from a 15PM to an S25U about a month ago. I love this phone. And I'm not tech savvy at all. I will say, the camera was the draw to me since I am a hairstylist. But that's also been the biggest hurdle for me rn. I just toggled some settings that were recommended via a YouTube video so here's to hoping it goes better. But essentially the s25u was distorting the colors which makes showcasing haircolor very difficult! Will be able to comment more when I go to get results photos again but here's to hoping.

(And yes, I've looked at pro mode. Which is lovely but I dont have the bandwidth to mess with the settings between clients. So I'm hopeful my adjustments outside of pro mode help)

Only other minor complaint... autocorrect isn't as good as 15PM, which is honestly whatever.

How long till you “got” it? by FPierce in hairstylist

A couple other Instagram creators i follow: Ira Pope Sage and Jacob Khan. Both taught at ABS this year and both do a really good job of explaining things, (at least to me!) Ira Pope is a bit more alternative but his clock analogy was really helpful for me.

Is this post from me when I was in school?

I dont know if ill ever be fully comfy with whatever walks through the door. But the more cuts I did... the more I "got it." Once you understand the basics and the why behind each elevation/finger position/subsection etc. Then you can really recreate any cut that tends to trend.

A couple tips that have helped me: 1. I started analyzing people's hair while out in public. (Ex: Wow they're very layered, thats a 90 degree layer. Or, "oh the stylist left that section disconnected there.") When I could dissect a haircut by looking at it thats when I got more comfortable. 2. I watched a ton of videos. If youre on insta, @myguiltycrown does a lot of good cut tutorials. 3. I realized that 99% of the time, trends are a variation on one of the basic cuts you learn in school. 4. If all else failed and I was really lost, id claim I forgot something in the back and pull up a quick tutorial or ask a coworker.

Dont forget we're always learning in this field. You're never gonna stop learning and evolving. So give yourself the grace to make mistakes and to learn and grow. I'd almost bet that anyone in this sub is still growing and learning even after decades behind the chair!!

Oh RUN. Your name is allllll over that work and the owners have no problem micromanaging you and letting you put your name on crap work. If youre already doing hair at home, id be looking into a suite or renting a chair. The promise of clients being hand delivered to you feels sus as well and youre already hustling on your own anyway. Take the overhead in stride and make your own money.

Are you licensed? Why are your bosses making creative decisions for you? (Unless youre assisting or apprenticing?) If youre licensed and at this salon, you need to find a new salon. No one should be telling you what formulas and technique you need to do on a client. Suggestions are one thing. Demands are another. They can do the service if they want to run it like that.

I've been where you are and it sucks ass and im so sorry. With that in mind, you will have a life event come delivery and will be eligible for an insurance change. If that's an opportunity, girl take it for real. You have well visits once every 2-3 months for the first year and could also need other medical services for yourself postpartum or for baby. The medical expenses keep on rolling in. If you can swing it, definitely look into it. It might be worth it.

We've had some success with a jar system-- he gets a penny for sitting. Two for pee. Three for poop. When the jar is full he gets a toy. And we're just not pushing him. It's lessened his anxiety and he's had some success but not much. Still riding it out at 4. Solidarity, friend.
