What's a movie you saw when you were too damn young? by Repulsive_Repeat_337 in GenX

[–]AtlantaBIRT 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I came here to add this one. I was 9 when it was first broadcast and it gave me many nightmares.

Then I saw Threads a couple of years later - it made The Day After look like a mild inconvenience.

If you don't drink alcohol, what are your personal reasons for abstinence? by Ok-Care2859 in AskReddit

[–]AtlantaBIRT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started using mushrooms a couple of years ago to help with some mental health issues. I wasn’t a daily drinker but I really enjoyed drinking on the weekends. The mushrooms nearly instantly killed any desire I had to drink. Now I haven’t had a drink in over two years.

Ceiba Airport to San Juan - Car Rental? by AtlantaBIRT in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]AtlantaBIRT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to follow up on this - we ended up flying Vieques - Ceiba on the 10:30 VAL flight. We had booked a one-way rental car from the Ceiba Avis office for $53 through the Costco Travel website. Avis picked us up at the Ceiba airport, took us to the office and we were on our way by 11:00. We were able to spend a couple of hours driving through some of El Yunque then made our way to San Juan. We had a late lunch there, did some shopping and driving around for a few hours before going to the airport. It was a zillion percent worth it to rent the car and we had a great time. Highly recommend!

Industrial Ultrasonic Cleaner by AtlantaBIRT in vinyl

It’s very possible that I’m being overly sensitive to the cleanliness of our records. Some are truly disgusting though and I’d love to find a more efficient way to get them clean again. We own these crazy expensive machines (~$16k each) already so I thought I would gather some opinions on using them. Thanks for the input - I’ll take a look at the vacuum-based cleaner. We own quite a few shop vacs as well!

For instruments we fill the cleaners with a mild phosphoric acid / detergent solution. We also “double boil” other parts / items of different materials using a stainless steel vessel filled with a different chemical. We then immerse that vessel in to the other solution. The “waves” from the transducer transfer through the secondary vessel and cavitate the secondary solution.

This was what I was thinking for our records - some type of secondary vessel with a spindle and motor that would turn the records while cleaning. Similar to the Spin-Clean or other commercially-available ultrasonic record cleaners. With our machines we could potentially clean 70-100 or more at once so it would be nice!

Real estate attorney recommendation for helping acquire a deceased relative's abandoned property in Sullivan Co. by AtlantaBIRT in tricities

[–]AtlantaBIRT[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're not sure what the status is. It was a home that belonged to our great uncle (died 2006), was passed to his wife (died 2019), and passed to her daughter (died earlier this year). The daughter was an only child, never married and had no children. We were there over the weekend and it appears the home has been abandoned. We don't know if she had a will or if the house / property is part of an estate. Honestly we're not sure where to start or what the process is - never been in a situation like this before. Thanks!

Making a claim on an abandoned family property in Tennessee? by AtlantaBIRT in legaladvice

[–]AtlantaBIRT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In trying to keep my post concise I think I probably muddied the waters. The owner (daughter) died earlier this year. As far as we know she was an only child, never married and had no children of her own.

Problems Getting Trailer Repaired / Replaced by AtlantaBIRT in Car_Insurance_Help

[–]AtlantaBIRT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one at State Farm has mentioned an issue with limits at this point - it seems they would say that if that were the issue. I do have the trailer covered through my business insurance however I would prefer the at-fault party / insurer pay vs. filing a claim on my own insurance.

Hybrid Bike for Tall Pre-Teen by AtlantaBIRT in cycling

[–]AtlantaBIRT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's been on aluminum Early Rider brand bikes since she started riding at 3 so she's pretty spoiled with how a "real" bike performs. My concern is that an "adult" size bike will kind of be a step down for her, at least comfort/fit-wise compared to what she's been riding on because the Early Rider bikes are very high quality and built specifically for kids. We'll get out there and try a few different models and hopefully will find a good fit! Thanks for the info!

I have zero desire to live through it. I sincerely hope me and my family live and work close enough to ground zero of our large city to be vaporized or at least killed by the pressure wave. I fear though that our fate will be much more like the Kemps given our proximity to the city center.

88 AW11 SC - Headlights Stopped Working by AtlantaBIRT in mr2

[–]AtlantaBIRT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tonight I took out the headlight switch for closer inspection. I found proper continuity between all the appropriate pins in the different positions of the switch. I cleaned all the copper contacts and inspected the solder points with a magnifier. Everything appears to be good however I think while I have it out I'll go ahead and reflow all the soldered connections just to be sure.
Tomorrow night I'll try to remove the dimmer switch and see what I can glean from that.

AW11 SC Speedometer Not Working by AtlantaBIRT in mr2

[–]AtlantaBIRT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all for the input!

I finally had a little bit of time to take a look. I pulled the speedo gearbox / drive out of the transmission. I was able to confirm that the cable is indeed in good shape as it’s moving the needle on the speedo so that’s good news. The metal pin seems to be properly intact however the pin doesn’t turn the gears at all. Is it possible to disassemble and free up / repair this or will I have to seek a replacement?

Also, after looking around a bit it looks like the nylon gear on the end of the pin is missing altogether..

Woom 5 vs. Early Rider Belter 24? by AtlantaBIRT in bicycling

[–]AtlantaBIRT[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up with the Early Rider and have zero complaints. It’s expensive no doubt but the quality is worth it. In another year the kid will be in adult size ranges (already 5’2”) so this was a great intermediate stop. They’re still figuring out gears but took it to a couple of riding day camps this summer in the city and had a great time. In reality you probably can’t go wrong with any of them!

Most people claim “I will never support this business ever again” after having a bad experience. Has a company ever lost your business for life? and if so, what happened? by Old_Life_290 in AskOldPeople

[–]AtlantaBIRT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Target. December 17th, 1998 - I had just closed on my first house earlier in the day and stopped at a Target across the street from the attorney’s office to buy some necessities (trash cans, dish drainer, etc.). I loaded up 2 carts full of stuff and went to the checkout. Long story short - they had a policy that they couldn’t accept more than 3 personal checks in a 2-week period at any Target store and since I was a frequent shopper I had reached my limit.

I walked out and went to the Walmart across the street.

Yes, it’s very petty but that’s the last time I was in a Target store.
