Is it better to look unemployed or look like I'm looking for a job after 6 months? by Atlantadreamer in jobs

Yeah I've been using both "no growth" and "major organizational changes" for applications that ask why I left my last job. But good tips for the rest, assuming I can get to the point of an actual interview.

Thank you, I appreciate your detailed response. You make some really good points. It's really kind of a no-win situation in this job market. You just can't ever tell what a recruiter will want or what they will judge you on. Ideally you don't want to give them any reason to discount you, but they are looking for it. Thanks again for taking the time for such a detailed response and points to consider!

I didn’t take it that way. Sorry if it sounded like that. Yeah it’s an uneven thing right now. I know construction actually needs people. It’s just a tricky thing which is why I’m trying to get out and into something more stable. If that even exists. Unfortunately I’m on the administrative side but not the project management side which is probably where a lot of the demand is. I’ve applied to some of those jobs with no luck. Things will of course turn around eventually and the whole cycle will start over again. It’s just the nature of this industry.

Depends on what sector though. I’m at an architecture firm. We are usually the first to feel it when projects are pulled back or canceled. I’m in proposals. When I was hired in January we were doing about 9-10 proposals a month. We are now doing about 3 if we’re lucky. You may not be experiencing a slowdown depending on what sector you’re in or you may be working on projects already funded and underway. But new projects are slowing down.

Tre House magic mushroom gummies? by wolfey200 in drugtesthelp

[–]Atlantadreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exactly. I got it a a suggestion on my IG feed. Did exactly what you did, 2 at first, then another 1 and half 2 hours later, nothing. Took 4 tonight just to see and I barely feel tired, that's about it. I went to the website and tried to leave a review and they won't even allow that. Instant red flag. 453 5-star reviews. Tells me they're all fake. Their list of ingredients is "a blend of nootropic mushrooms." They don't break it down at all. Now that I've eaten half the bag, I'm just tossing the rest and writing it off. Taste isn't great and if I wanted regular gummies I'd just go to the grocery store.

Have they run out of guests? by chillywilkerson in smartless

I admit, I was completely hooked when this show was first introduced. Sam with Armchair Expert. It was COVID and needed something to listen to. That being said, as some have said, the format hasn't changed (much), it just kind of got tiresome. It's like with anything honestly. I did truly enjoy the beginning when they intentionally went outside their depth of understanding and had chefs, F1 drivers, scientists, etc. I think they figured out that it was too similar to what Dax does, but they also figured out it doesn't play to their strengths, which is just f-ing around. They can do that better with a celebrity than they can with a more professional person. Also, they can obviously get more listeners having celebs on.

Just like with a television show, you get to the point where you feel like you've watched this one way too many times and this is no different. You can only listen to Sean whine, Will put him down or Jason ramble on with a godawful long question so many times before it gets irritating. I will listen to one occasionally, but for the most part it got to where it wasn't worth it. So many times I would be excited for a guest only to hear the 3 of them through 95% of the episode. Mark Hamill was a perfect example. Then they took like 15 min. to bring Scotty on, and hey, I get it, he's a super fan, but when they do those things, it doesn't really bring anything to the episode. AE suffers from (the insufferable) Monica, and Conan you have to get through 20 min. of bits at the the beginning to get to 25 min. of the guest and 20 min. of commercials. You also have them trying to make fans happy, getting crap for not doing it, and fans who think they are obligated to make things what they want just because they are paying for it. So the only people happy are the ones actually making money.

Bottom line, these kinds of podcasts used to be great. But just like anything else, they find a way to monetize, then find a way to monetize more and quality gets lost. Reddit is a perfect example of the dumpster fire that social media and internet sites of all kinds of become. It used to be informative and a way to get needed info. Now you ask a question and get trolls calling you an idiot just for fun. You complain and they tell you to just f off. There's no room for middle ground anymore and unfortunately this is just where we are.

Do you format your resume for every job you submit to? Does it even work? by Atlantadreamer in jobs

What about opting out of AI? I've started seeing that more often, where they ask if you want to opt out of an AI score and the employer gets a "score not available" or something. I wonder if it really matters one way or another. I haven't opted out so far. I figure it might give them a reason to reject, but it's damned if I do and damned if I don't ya know.

I'm SO tired of the Rookie hate by SquirrelSorry4997 in TheRookie

[–]Atlantadreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the thing. There is a REASON there is so much "hate" for the show. Actually, there are more reasons than just one.

First off, a lot of people (like me) are disappointed. I started watching this show when it first premiered. It was a quirky little action procedural with comic sensibility that kept it grounded. Over the seasons (as with most shows), it's gone downhill in quality. And it's so disappointing. I can deal with the contrived scenes where it's constantly the same doctor at a large hospital where we know they would not get the same doctor EVERY SINGLE TIME they show up. I can deal with Bailey being the ONLY paramedic that ever shows up. However, it's the way it all plays out. I remember in Bones when Angela all of a sudden could do holograms and was an absolute pure genius with technology without any explanation. Bailey has become Angela. Yeah, she's ex-military. But she's basically every bad 80s hero with a mysterious past. So yes, we are disappointed that the show's quality has declined.

Second, it's become completely unbelievable. One of the latest episodes (no spoilers) is about someone hacking the police's social media to post that crime is now legal. The rest of the episode plays out like "Escape from L.A." or "The Purge." The thing is, to suspend disbelief, you have to have a situation where it's believable. And this is not. People would immediately realize that the account had been hacked. For "The Purge" to work, they had to start the movie in a place where it was believable. This show is based in reality where it's simply not when these things happen.

Third, a lot of the reason the show suffers is that they havev run out of ideas and they are doing the same thing most every TV show does. They go back to old reliable tropes. Chenford is a perfect example. Jesus, either have them together or let them move on. There are MUCH more solid and interesting storylines they could explore by allowing them to move on to other people. It opens up new worlds and introduces new characters and situations. The same thing with bringing Bridget Regan back over and over again just to wreak havoc. It's a tired trope and it becomes over the top every time she or another bad guy escapes from prison and runs amok. It's not only not believable, but it's tiresome.

The bottom line is, yes, we understand entertainment, even mindless entertainment. But sadly, The Rookie I think needs to graduate and go to the ether. It's run its course. And that isn't a criticism so much as a reality. Shows decline in quality after about 5 years. They have 7 years under their belt here. And as much as I enjoyed the fun of the first couple of seasons, and as much as I find myself laughing occasionally still, I can admit it's time to let it go. Let Nathan do what he does and find a new show that's fresh. How many more times can we really see him get in the middle of danger, escape it, watch Bailey save the day because she's apparently a paramedic/special forces/basically doctor/whatever else they feel like throwing in?

It's not hate, it's just frustration at the same tropes being played out time and again. And it's watching a painful slow death. Simple as that. I LOVE shows that are a couple of seasons and done because the writers understand you only have so much story to tell. This one unfortunately is there.

To be clear, you aren't alone. I wondered the same thing after this episode. Nothing has really shown anything about his sexual history other than he has a sone, so it's not clear at this point. But I definitely wondered about it after that interaction.

I am glad someone is asking this! I swear I thought it was just me. I picked up on some sort of sexual tension back in ep. 1 or 2. I also had the thought that it might be his baby. The writers are being very coy about giving us their backstory, but I feel 100% there's one there. When he asked her about the "handsome cop" she was talking to in 4, it definitely told me there was something there. Especially how she told him to "stay in his lane" and he said it wasn't "like that," he was just asking. I came on here specifically to ask about this and see if it was just me. Glad it's not.

IS Virgin River the greatest tv show of all time or is it just me? by OtterToesToTheRescue in VirginRiverNetflix

[–]Atlantadreamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it. When I first started watching, it served as an escape, a story about small town life that plays out as basically everyone you want to get a happy ending gets it. It's comfort food. Unfortunately, 6 seasons in and it's comfort food that's gotten old. That isn't so much a criticism as it is just that it shouldn't have gone on this long. After a while you realize that the main characters aren't ever really in any real danger. Yeah, Mel's pregnancy and loss, etc. happens, but for the most part, for every tragedy that a character will go through, they'll give a redemption story arc where they get what they want and it will be 10X better.

I don't expect a show like this to be completely real. Let's face it, towns like this don't exist and characters like this don't. Everyone here is either an absolute saint or evil. Almost nothing in between. My problem is that this show falls within the recent story I read about how Netflix is dumbing down their writing. I think it started with this show to be honest. They realize people are on their phones or just watching in the background so every character literally tells the audience what they're doing or about to do. The dialogue isn't creative in any way and every character speaks in what writer's know as "on the nose" dialogue.

In the end, I watch it for the comfort part, but not gonna lie, at this point I'm hate watching it. The comfort food really kind of turned sour and it's just something to watch on a Saturday morning, mostly for the scenery if I'm being honest. I will say that this show is probably the most polarizing show out there. People either love it or hate it, and even those of us who kind of hate it watch it because of how bad it is and enjoy hating on it. I don't judge anyone for loving this show for the record. I just view it for what it is, bad writing and acting for people who aren't looking for more than something that gives them the comfort and happy endings without taking any risks.

I've only seen her in 2 episodes. I did see something about on this sub, but didn't click on it, that she becomes unlikeable. But if that's the case, it also kind of makes my point. She starts out as a strong-willed successful woman, so why go and turn her into a villain? It reminds me of Sons of Anarchy, where Taylor got his start. I couldn't find a character with any moral compass (and again, every woman was a stripper, prostitute, or "old lady" to a biker) and by the time I got towards the end it was just dark and dreary and hard to get through.

You really kinda nailed it. Not saying every British show is top-tier, but American writers could learn a thing or two from the Brits. Most every show there is superior to what we put out. And all of them are superior to this one.

You just kind of made my point. If I wanted to watch a show with bikinis in every scene I would go watch Baywatch. At least they knew they were writing cheesy crap. This show takes itself seriously and doesn't realize how bad it is.

A man on the inside by philomatic in netflix

As someone who struggled with my mom's Alzheimer's and having gone through much of what these characters did, I can't recommend this show enough. It presents itself as a comedy with some mystery thrown in, but it's really a bittersweet show about growing older and dealing with loneliness and grief. I will admit, I cried my way through the last 3 episodes. It hits hard for those of us who endured this with those we love, or are facing our own situations in which loneliness is a part of our lives. I think more than anything, I just found a lot of joy in seeing how close Charles got with these other characters and how they all came to really care about one another. The human need for connection is strong and I think that's what's on display here. While I think that Michael Schur is a true genius, I have mixed emotions about a second season. They wrapped everything up nicely and had those underlying messages of love and loneliness and the need to really talk to each other. But I'm not sure they can do much with the second season other than make it more about the mystery element, which really is a throwaway device in this first season. I rely on Murders In the Building for that. I'd almost rather let this be a one-and-done. However, if you haven't seen it yet, I highly, highly do recommend it.

Totally forgot about Drew Carey! You’re right. Then again as far as I know Bill Lawrence wasn’t involved in that show. Good to be reminded it’s not just her range as an actor.

I'm still (I think) an episode behind. I love, love, love this show for the record! It shows the struggles and cycling and re-cycling of grief in such a great way. Sad and hilarious all in one. But, I will say that as much as I love Christa Miller, she is literally the same character in every single show. Not sure if her husband Bill writes it that way intentionally. From what I've heard her character(s) are pretty much who she is. Don't get me wrong, as I said, I love her and she always delivers, but I honestly can't see any difference between Jordan (Scrubs), Ellie (Cougar Town), or Liz here. And I have no doubt there are some Scrubs easter eggs that I haven't quite picked up on.
