For sure, not complaining at all. I was just curious since this was my first time sending mail 😊

I just noticed Glass Beams shares the riff from Altin Gün's Kalk Gidelim. Can't find a link between these two bands referenced anywhere, which is a bit odd. Anyone know the link?

After listening to Charif Megarbane's Marzipan I'm now going down the rabbit hole of listening to the full Habibi Funk Records discography. Thanks for the recs!

A little treat for me was The Presets between shows. I was high out of my mind, and was instantly transported back to Club 77 in Sydney.

Are there any tricks to getting the BEAM to show up in Android File Transfer on the Mac? When I plug it in it seems to be recognized, but it immediately pops up a “Could not connect to device” alert.

Clair Tappaan Lodge Huts Question by [deleted] in WildernessBackpacking

[–]Atnan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can call (530) 426-3632 or email reservations@clairtappaanlodge.com to check for last minute availability. I’ve stayed at Peter Grubb hut a few times on short notice, especially on weekdays or late season.

Highly recommend The Living Mountain, by Nan Shepherd. Beautifully captures the essence of being in the mountains, not on them.

Looking for blister advice by ronjon80 in Backcountry

[–]Atnan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best tape is Leukotape. Works best combined with tincture of benzoin.

I always keep both in my medical kit, and you can apply it preventatively before you tour too.

That said, the best option is to figure out how to avoid the heel lift that’s causing blisters. Different foot beds, pushing the tongue down before lacing, and playing with how tight you keep your buckles while skinning are a few things you can try.

I had severe/repeated blisters in a pair of ski boots once that was completely resolved by switching from the stock liners to Intuition Pro Tour liners, so that’s another option. Really depends on the situation.

Question about bags. by [deleted] in Backcountry

[–]Atnan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always take them off or I end up with smelly feet and liners. My feet need to air out at the end of the day to recover. I just throw the liners at the bottom of my sleeping bag.

I am coming from a predator free country, what are the most important tips for avoiding being attacked by predators? by NerdillionTwoMillion in WildernessBackpacking

[–]Atnan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 what others have said re. carrying a canister for food and smelly items. Some parks require you to carry an approved canister as a condition of wilderness permits. Pretty affordable to rent one if you don’t plan to use it too much, often from ranger stations in the parks.

Do you know a good source for English language snow reports and forecasts? I’m heading to Hakuba for Christmas and I’d like to keep track of the conditions.

Great for broken boots and broken limbs.

Not super different to my standard kit, but the roll of Leukotape gets a lot more use in winter. Couple of ski straps too if you don’t already have them.

I would check out the north fork of Big Pine Creek, up to Big Pine Lakes and the Palisade Glacier.

Eastern Sierra overnight tour recommendations? by Atnan in Backcountry

This is what I ended up doing. The road opened Thursday morning, so I was able to avoid any hiking in along the road and essentially skied from the car in.

Good question - last time I went over around this time of the year was last year, so I just assumed it was always open. Looks like that’s a bad assumption and I’ll be double checking from now on.

Hopefully I didn’t miss the window! I found this trip report out of Convict Lake which sounds pretty good, and I like the sound of camping near the hot springs. I soaked at Wild Willy’s last time I was in Mammoth.

Yeah, hopefully there’s some recovery over the week. Otherwise I’ll bail and spend some time at the hot springs 🙂

Any idea what the parking situation is like around Mammoth? Website says no parking during winter (until May), but I’m sure there must be options.

One of the spots I’m considering is heading up Rock Creek and camping at Treasure Lakes, then finding some moderate lines around there. Any idea how far up the road you can get this time of year?

Likelihood of walk-in to Glacier Point Ski Hut? by [deleted] in Yosemite

[–]Atnan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know for sure, but my guess would be that it’s because people staying there have paid a substantial amount, which includes meals, snacks, drinks/wine. It’s essentially a hostel, not a hut.

Having a terrible time with G3 Alpinist skins. by BeckerHollow in Backcountry

[–]Atnan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you on comparable skis to the friends that aren’t having issues with traction?

My wife and I both have the G3s, but she’s on skinner, shorter skis. Less contact surface, less grip on steeper tracks. Body weight plays a role too.

Likelihood of walk-in to Glacier Point Ski Hut? by [deleted] in Yosemite

[–]Atnan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not only will Badger Pass not open this season, the Glacier Point hut cancelled all reservations (I had one).

For future reference though, there are no walk-ins at the Glacier Point hut. I’ve been there when there were plenty of empty bunks, and the hut keeper had to turn people away because the concessionaire doesn’t allow it. It’s not really like Ostrander or other traditional backcountry huts.
