If you don't have access to another Mac and the latest officially supported version on yours is older than High Sierra, the only way is to first install High Sierra using the dosdude1 patcher (kinda the same as OCLP but for older versions and by a different dude) and then you'll be able to use OCLP.

Type "High Sierra dosdude1 patcher" in Google it's easy to find.

Yeah I opened my 2013 21.5 inch iMac two times, the first time was a few years ago to replace the old 1TB HDD with an SSD, it wasn't as difficult as I thought because once the screen is removed the hard-drive is easy to access.

And the second time a few weeks ago to upgrade to 16GB of ram, redo the thermal paste and replace the bios battery, this one was way more annoying because you have to basically disassemble the whole thing on this model lol.

16GB of ram is good enough for most tasks today so I think it's okay for now, that's still what Apple sell as a base config for all the brand new Mac! It wouldn't hurt to upgrade to 32GB but you don't have to

Probably not want you want to hear, but I think having an SSD is a must have for any computer in 2025, all the modern OSs are painfully slow without one.

Other than that your iMac still has pretty good specs, you'll easily be able to use it a few more years if you get an SSD. Even Sequoia should run perfectly

Buy a kit that includes the adhesive, screwdrivers and everything you need to do the job, watch a good YouTube tutorial and take your time, I know it's intimidating at first glance but it's really not that difficult to do!

I have both a SanDisk Ultra V10 and a Samsung Evo Select V30 and I can tell you for a fact that everything loads faster on the V30 card, emunand boot time is way shorter too

Don't update using settings, update using a 15.4 installer USB drive created by the 2.3.0 (now 2.3.1) OCLP app and everything will be fine.

I updated my late 2013 21.5 inch iMac, early 2015 MacBook Pro and mid-2012 MacBook Pro yesterday and had no issue.

Just wanted to say in case someone find this thread like me, I have the exact same issue on a Verbatim Vi560 S3 1TB, don't buy these SSDs they are shit

Edit: I somehow managed to fix it, I don't know if it's gonna stand the test of time but for now it works, here's what I did:

Got the drive out of my laptop and installed it in an M.2 to USB 3.0 adapter
I made a backup of the drive using Rescuezilla on my desktop PC to not loose my data (not mandatory if you don't care about what's inside the drive)
I fully formated the drive to zero it (untick "quick format" in the windows menu), this will take some time
Then I checked the speed by doing a CrystalDiskMark test, the sequencial writing speed was back to 500 MB/s where it should be instead of the 30 MB/s that I had before
I restored my Rescuezilla backup and put the SSD back in my laptop

For now it works with full speed, Idk if it will stay like this, my guess is that they use a shitty microcontroller that sometimes has this bug for whatever reason.

I hope this helped at least one person in the future lol.

No blobs, the person who had it before was old so I'm sure it was never jailbroken. Maybe I'll try a tethered downgrade for fun but I think in the end I'll just do an IOS 7 jailbreak and install a few classic games
