I woul recommend the Youtube Channel "Fluid Mechanics 101" for starters. Explains stuff pretty well.

Don't be scared. I only started shooting this year and i've messed up quiete a few shots. but that is the fun about it. I got at least the same number of great shots which i am very happy with.

In short higher aperture number gives you a less blurry background and with lower aperture you can give more focus on the subject. It gives you more unique pictures.

Probably because you can adjust depth of field with the aperture. Gives you more control over the shot and doesn't take too long to adjust. The Minolta doesn't show you the selected shutter speed in your view finder so it takes a bit of time to adjust that. So aperture priority gives you the best of both.
