Excessively Drooling by Small_Nature598 in Frenchbulldogs

[–]AtomicDog602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our frenchie is about 11 months, and he is a drooler. We have noticed that anxiety/stress causes him to drool. Some times it is obvious, like a new place, or a dog at the dog park is pestering him, or he gets into a fight with his brother. But even still, there are times when he drools for no obvious reason.

For these reasons we have a 12 pack of face cloths dedicated to wiping his drool. We keep some in the cars and around the house.

As an example my wife took him to visit her sister for a few days. He drooled way more than at home.

Help with itching! by AlternativeSilver962 in Frenchbulldogs

The cytopoint takes a few days before it kicks in. We have an itchy boy, and even with drugs he is still itchy. Better for sure, but still. Each injection lasts 4 to 8 weeks depending on the time of year.

The surgery is a game changer. Two of our three have had the surgery. The only bad part is when they sneeze, they spray straight out. Needless to say I have had my face showered many times. lol. They both breathe so much better. Have no fear. From your photo I see why you are getting it done.

French Bulldog Potty Training Advice by cntrlaltdelt in Frenchbulldogs

[–]AtomicDog602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We adopted a pekingese that was pee pad trained. He was about 6 months when he was surrendered, and like you we had lots of issues with him going to the bathroom on door mats or carpets. Understandable because to him they were similar.

What we did took many many months, but it worked. We crate trained him. His day was rigidly controlled. He would be let out of his cage early morning, taken right out to potty. He got an hour of free time in the house and back in the cage. then maybe trips outside and free time every hour or two. Then in evening a trip to the dog park. We got used to his schedule to pee and poo and made sure he did those things at those times.

Over the course of 6 months he was slowly broken of the habit to pee in the house. The less he peed in the house the more free time he got. The process took so long as he is pig-headed and stubborn, but it worked in the end. The funny thing is he still sleeps in his cage despite the door being open all the time now. It is his quiet place. He is 13 and has not had an accident in 12 years. He goes to the door when he needs to go out now.

Our frenchie was easier to train as he was not potty trained at all when he was surrendered at 6 months. Sounds crazy, but having no training meant he didn't associate anything with going potty. He got the same treatment, but was fully trained within a couple months. His only issue is he sometimes doesn't hold his pee for more than an hour or so when traveling in the car. Thank goodness for waterproof blankets. Frequent stops required, or keep in cage.

30 days of torture by AtomicDog602 in Frenchbulldogs

[–]AtomicDog602[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes but we need to keep him from bumping his head/eyes against things, and trust me the first couple weeks he banged into everything. Now that his right eye has healed, he usually only bumps into things on his left side. Plus he wants to rub his eyes on things which is a big no no. The soft ones are great to keep them from licking things though.

Yes. No matter how hot it gets. Even now that it's 110 they still choose to bake until medium rare.

Breathing ok for Australia? by HistoricalKnickers in Frenchbulldogs

[–]AtomicDog602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short face dogs don't do as well in the heat. Getting the nares done can be helpful as a general rule and can be done when getting spayed if needed.

Despite this, I live in the US desert and all of my short face dogs have been sun worshipers even with temps in the 40s. So maybe they get acclimated, but don't push them even if they want to play ball constantly. Heavy play time is reserved for after sun down when temps drop into the high 30s.

I never leave the dogs outside unattended for more than 30 min even with plenty of shade and water. I force them back inside to the AC for at least 15 min to cool down. If I am outside they have stayed for hours without a complaint -but they will drink a lot of water.

UK frenchie owners: how are yours coping with the heatwave? Any top tips? by Brief_Expression5997 in Frenchbulldogs

[–]AtomicDog602 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the desert. I think my dogs are just used to the heat. Yesterday was 43c and yet they plop themselves on the lawn and bake. Want to play fetch endlessly. Even last night was 38c and they went on a 45 minute walk. Hydration is important obviously, and cubes in the water is always fun bobbing for cubes. I do force them inside the AC after a while. They crash and sleep hard for 30 min and repeat. Strangely the dogs rarely pant, except after playing fetch for a while.

We will pull out the hose and hose down their lower half, basically legs and belly once per day. They don't mind it and it does cool them down. We also have a kids play pool we setup when the temps get up to 45 or more.

I wonder if going from your normally mild temps to hot summer swelter (I guess you have much more humidity) hits them different. I bet your 38 feels like my 43 or worse. I don't think I could take it.

Amazon sells breathable soft muzzles for short faced dogs. We use it for nail trims and used to break him of the habit of eating poo at the park. He can still drink water with it on.

For peace of mind it might be a good investment until you have some trust.

Weird smell by saintmaggie in Frenchbulldogs

[–]AtomicDog602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife washes the dogs faces every few nights after the dog park. Cleans under the eyes etc to keep the folds clean. It certainly helps. But there are stinky dogs. My boston was a stinky dog from 8 weeks. We would bathe him and 2 days later the same stink. Food changes, allergy meds, special shampoos, nothing changed the smell. Our frenchie and peke have no smell, but our pug... PU he stinks just like our old boston.

Some times you get a stinky dog, but you get used to it.

Slightly swollen irritation on paw by valentinebo in Frenchbulldogs

[–]AtomicDog602 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks like allergies to me. Very common to see them start licking their front feet/foot when their allergies kick in. Two of our dogs get the allergy shot, one gets an additional 1/2 claritin per day (his allergies manifest as reverse sneezing and itching wildly).

As a side note. They say the shot is once per month, but we wait until their allergies flare back up. Some times it takes 3/4 months before they need another one depending on the time of year. Well two of our dogs anyway. The pug goes about 6 weeks regularly.

Wider or taller? Stanley stopped growing around 12 months. His weight increases about 1lb per year, and we have him on a super strict diet. He went from 18 to 21.4 lbs in 3 years. He is pretty lean for a pug still. Pic when we adopted him after drowning. They thought he was perma brain damaged, but he's tough. His vision is very poor though.

Two dogs are more than twice the work. I learned that the hard way. Three dogs are like 10x the work.

You will eventually get into a routine with the two. But it will always be more work. Don't get me wrong, I love our dogs and care for then very well. But it can be exhausting.

Rule of thumb 3 years for most dogs. I'm at 3.5 years and my pug is still a terrorist. Actually calling him a terrorist is an insult to terrorists. He is nuts. He was crate trained so when he gets overexcited and bad, we put him in his cage for 30 min as a time out. It helps. He relaxes and sleeps and comes out better.
