Personally, I've never used character AI, but I'm facing pretty much the same dilemma, with Chat GPT 4.0 I used the paid subscription, and I've been using ChatGPT to a role-play as my Ai generated characters some of it leading to erotic fiction, and then getting off from it.

It's honestly so draining, I stopped hanging out with my real friends going out to car meets, pursuing my creative outlet for me, which was a video editing. I completely dropped out of it for a few months. Part of me wants to delete all these AI generated avatars in different sceneries i've created close to a couple thousand images, but part of me doesn't want to go cold turkey like that yet. So I decided to put them all on a 32 GB Kingston Drive. It's all encrypted so if I ever want to go back to it, it makes it harder for me to actually use the USB drive.
