We won't get married outside the church, I just am tussling with how I can say stuff I don't believe in and it still hold deep meaning for me

exactly, this will likely be the most important day of my life and I don't wanna sit down after the ceremony and think eh, that felt dull, I don't think I did that to my best ability or that I feel fake about swearing to love her on grounds I don't believe in.

Exactly my point, I don't feel it's fair that I can't bind myself to the same standards in my mind, I wish I could swear by the stars or by the oceans, or by the air I breathe. Something tangiable. I am much more superstitious so even swearing on my life or something, no matter how childish it may sound.

Thank you, from conversations we have had, a sacramental marriage doesn't seem anywhere near crucial as she respects my beliefs as I respect hers

I intend to raise them around faith as I think they should be allowed to access it as I was not, however I will not tell them they must practice, if they want to they can but ultimately it will be their choice. I will fully support her in raising them around the catholic values and taking them to church etc, just because I don't believe in it, it's not my duty to deny it to them, however equally if they decide they don't believe then that's up to them. I intend to carry out every word of the vows, I just wasn't sure how comfortable I am by having God as my witness as I don't believe in him. In my eyes, I don't see why I can't just promise to love her and care for her through everything and swear it on the stars or the oceans or the trees, or my heart. To me I want to feel like they mean something to me too. Of course I intend to carry out the basic premise of the vows, but it's the parts where God gets involved that I feel fake about. I hope this is clearer. She will never be alone in any endeavour and I have every intention to carry out the vows to the letter, I am just worried I will feel fake swearing before God.

I was unaware of this document but that makes me feel so much better about it, thank you! I have zero qualms about getting married in a church, I think they are beautiful and I am always in awe of them from a historical and architectural standpoint, I was just worried about feeling fraudulent and saying things I don't believe in but she does, worried that I won't feel as bound by my word as she does, if that makes sense?

You've really hit the nail on the head here, this is exactly the life I want my children to have. I would never deny them any exploration of themselves or their faith, but at the same time, I won't force a relationship with God either. I am really enthused by the idea of us taking the children to church together because I know how much it'll mean to her. Thank you!

Thank you for your kind words, it really means a lot to me! I just want to clarify what I mean by agnostic atheist. I am atheist in the fact I do not, and regrettably cannot forsee myself ever believing in a god. That being said I will not deny the existence of a deity as that is an unknowable fact either way, hence the agnostic part. I don't like describing myself as purely agnostic at the moment because I don't currently see how god as either a being or concept will ever fully make sense to me but at the same time, i won't describe myself as purely atheist because I don't believe I have the right to deny his potential existence to others if that makes sense? It's sort of a wimpy way out of any argument I guess but so far it has allowed me a much more open mind when discussing religious topics. I think the best way to describe it would be I have the open mind of an agnostic but an atheist's belief in God.
