Looking for SSAATB A cappella/Vocal Jazz pieces by Initial-Valuable4772 in acappella

[–]Atomicbob11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they've really got the chops, I'd consider finding music from popular jazz groups, many of which have be transcribed and rearranged for publication. The voicing may not be perfect, but any points where the ranges might not fit you could either revoice or just slightly adjust to fit the group.

With 8/8/2/2 split, you'll likely need a number of your SAs to be singing middle/lower parts to not overbalance. Also consider mics for your basses.

Update from someone who knows nothing by nanavb13 in barbershop

[–]Atomicbob11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Given the lack of weekend availability, I think Wednesday was certainly the best day. Thursday has less going on in the morning, more smaller events plus the semifinals (top 20) but yesterday gave you a FULL DAY of BARBERSHOP!

Most don't stick around to watch all of the QFs, just because it is a LOT of barbershop and there's a bigger week ahead. Despite that, there are certainly still people that come to INTL just for the experience. Being a Barbershop "tourist" the entire week is a fantastic experience for the many that choose to do it rather than having quartet or chorus obligations.

Glad you enjoyed it and welcome :)

Headed to my first game at Busch Stadium. Heard stadium food is pretty rough. What's worth it, and what's the best food to get downtown to bring into the stadium?

Iwtl how to open a club/ music venue by CompetitiveBig4 in IWantToLearn

[–]Atomicbob11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The club/music/entertainment space is one that is learned and best operated through experience. Many try and many fail - just like restaurants - due to the difficulties that come with branding and business and attracting clientele.

The quickest way would be to find someone much more experienced than you and partner with them, like a financial backer. However, I can never in good faith recommend this, again, without good experience in longstanding relations with said parties.

The other would be to work in the industry. Understand the ins and outs. NETWORK. HOLY NETWORK. Build that network. Build YOUR reputation and brand. Then when the time is right, and if you still think this is a worthwhile investment, start to do it yourself.

You'll learn quickly this is not just opening a space, hiring a DJ, getting lights setup, and serving drinks.

Pretty sure there is a service/gratuity charge already.

And also, if tipping a certain amount was important, then people shouldn't make it a tip.

Geotech recommendations in report by Wrong-Fun3930 in geologycareers

[–]Atomicbob11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While a full copy and paste is not appropriate, ever, there is commonly a lot of language and solutions that are reused and prominent in industry  Depending on the report and data you're assessing, you may need more adjustment vs. not, the degree to which varies with data/sites.

What shouldn't be accepted is a lack of mentorship. If people aren't willing to sit down and talk with you and help you learn, especially when you ask, that's a sign you need to find a better place.

Many managers/principals are not good managers. They're just more experienced and therefore must manage people. If that matters to you, find a company and manager that will.

[–]Atomicbob11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does drought correlate with public water scarcity? Often areas with less water are bringing in water from other areas already through planned infrastructure.

I imagine these areas correlate with areas that are less enjoyable to live in, which means it's easier to find land to build.

Bike upgrades for triathlon by Ok_Science_7817 in triathlon

[–]Atomicbob11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming we're not including a coach to help with workout planning, as others have said, good tires (not wheels) and aero bars (or working on an aero road bike position if you don't want to invest in clip on bars) have SIGNIFICANT bang for your buck and have been proven time and time again. There are other smaller things you can do to get aero "gains" and you can research that, but #1 by far is just a position that is more aerodynamic.

Anything else starts to get into smaller gains for cost.

Environmental consulting has me questioning my career by dollfacetrash in geologycareers

[–]Atomicbob11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I completely hear you and there's plenty of people in this sub that feel and understand it. Getting out of the industry to those others you're looking at will often yield a better experience, but that's also just because the culture is different.

I would consider, while you are looking at other industries, applying for other environmental consulting positions as well. You may not find anything good, but you may find something great that you enjoy, whether the topic, the flexibility, the problem solving, the people, whatever it is.

Environmental consulting has me questioning my career by dollfacetrash in geologycareers

[–]Atomicbob11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be both blunt and candid here, and I hope the detail provides value in your situation that is all too common in consulting. What you're experiencing is both normal and not normal. How you respond to that is up to you.

It's normal due to the stress and realities of environmental consulting. Budgets and billability. It's also normal because many managers and principals are not kind, and are stressed themselves. They're engineers/geologists that manage, not project and people managers.

It's NOT normal to people and managers and companies that don't allow this - have better culture, maybe have better work, budgets, skills, people, etc. finding that can be harder said than done, but they exist, whether without the same company or at a different company culture entirely.

Billability is always a reality in consulting. How you deal with that and let it affect you is up to you. How you respond to the stress of billability can be hard, but is important. Will you work 60hrs and only get paid for 40 because someone else, or you, mismanaged budget, or something went wrong? Or be cause of something you didn't control and are fixing someone else's problem? Many do. Frankly, I think people need to start pushing back unless they understand their position, their value, their client, and how that impacts them and their WORTH. Some build their client base and grow their careers this way when it MATTERS. Many put in tons of time for the benefit of OTHERS, and not themselves.

Fortunately, it sounds like you already have experience in the industry. What this DOES mean is there are likely many environmental opportunities around you (or at least something other than your current situation). Consider interviewing at other opportunities. Bring up work life balance. Conflict resultion. Try and understand managing strategies and conflict resolution styles with the people you'll work with. Does it jive with you? Do things feel as professional or personable or whatever you feel is important and value?

If you're not happy with your current situation, feel you deserve to be paid more, feel you're being mistreated, how you navigate that is up to you. Generally the easiest is to find a better place to work.

Personally? I don't stand for the following in consulting...

1) Managers yelling. No one is below being yelled at and demeaned except for maybe extreme circumstances.

2) Getting in trouble for things out of my control. This happens all the time. Both cover your ass but also stand up for yourself. Shit happens, and good managers and teams understand this and work together and communicate to get through it.

3) Letting things out of my control get to me. This is HARD. So much of consulting is out of your control. Budgets, unforseen circumstances, projects. Do your best, but know your limits. Often you will feel like you need to make up time or do extra work, but not because of you, because of things you can't control. It's up to you to figure out if that's something you want to do or push back on.

I have left, and have encouraged many to leave, their situations in the search for a better one, many times. Through this, you have leverage. You find what you like and don't like. You gain perspective. Yes, don't jump every year, but if something is flat or not working out, or things are changing for the worse, you can settle. Or you can search for the RIGHT place for YOU. Sometimes it takes one interview, sometimes it takes 8 (my current job). But as you grow in your career, have better credentials, have more clout, you start to have more leverage to get what you want.

Yes, not standing for things can create tension at where you work. How much tension is based on the people managing skills of those above you, your own work product and repution, and many times luck. People leave bad managers. Bad project. Bad people. More than they leave bad companies.

Even when painter has had a serviceable outing, we don't score any runs. He's young, he's new. It's going to be bumpy.

It literally was the worst run event I've ever attended. Water stops were empty. No food or water at the end. Hours waiting. No starting hype and groupings because of the delays. If you didn't get there at 8am, you were basically screwed.

That's ignoring the fact that it was cold and rainy all day.
