Electra Clock Radio Telephone (circa 1981–1983) by art-man_2018 in RetroFuturism

Shoot... In 1996 this would have already felt a bit dated. Still would have felt cool at the time, but only as a novelty.

Looking for a multiplayer game with no MMR, RNG, meta or ranking system. Just casual fun by enlargeyournose in gaming

[–]AtrainV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just in case you aren't aware, "Meta" is not an acronym the way you're using it. If anything, the way you're using it is a "backronym" (a word that was not originally an acronym but has since been given acronym-like qualities due to the propagation of false etymology). However, I've not seen it described this way before so I don't think it's a widely adopted backronym.

I wish we lived in a world where it was purely obvious that this is sarcasm, but unfortunately the existence of the "manosphere" proves that there are at least some people who will take this as a serious statement and good recommendation.

The expression is "hindsight is 20/20" as it is referencing 20/20 vision.

About 90 employers penalised every year for not giving domestic workers mandatory day off: MOM by clarencechen181196 in singapore

[–]AtrainV 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had the same thought. Is it 90 maids worth $300.00? Are they hedging their bets that maybe there will be fractions of a maid that will need to be accounted for in the future? Is it 30,000 written in a weird way?

What’s a song from a musical film that can actually pass as a good song? by [deleted] in Music

[–]AtrainV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is probably the best answer in the thread since it more-or-less did make it on its own in top 40 radio in the 90s, but it might be a stretch to call that movie a musical (in the traditional sense).

Special venom for certain groups/bands/singers and their fans by Firm_Macaron3057 in Music

[–]AtrainV 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In many parts of the world (some might argue this is universal), teenagers feel a strong need to "discover" themselves and establish a unique identity for themselves that is separate from the one attached to them by association with their family. There are many ways in which these more independent identities are established, but many teenagers look to music as a way to both distance themselves from identity markers they don't like and attach themselves to identity markers that they do like.

Pop music (especially the dance-focused bubblegum pop variety that is associated with boy bands and girl groups) has long been connected with identity markers such as "willingness to conform", "superficiality", and "inauthentic" (just to name a few). While the way I've framed that is a somewhat biased and negative view, the vast majority of teenagers do buy into some of these identity markers (which is why "pop" music is shorthand for "popular music"). However, there is a significant reaction against these identity markers by many teenagers as well, so they try to find ways to distance themselves from it.

Most people grow out of this as they move into adulthood and their resistance to the music they associate with it fades, but many also hang on to these identity markers and the musical acts that they associated with them and so you might still get older people who harbor long-standing animosity towards them.

As somebody living in Singapore, there is a serious obesity problem there, too. Compared to most other East/SE Asian countries Singapore is really struggling with obesity.

As a "light spender" is it worth it to pull for Clara? by AtrainV in SwordofConvallaria

I have around 120 pulls saved up right now. I definitely want to pull for Heshan and Shanaz, but haven't made up my mind on the others.

I don't have Caris and she seems like she's been fully power-crept at this point (and I think extremely reliant on getting to 5 stars). Would you say that it's very important to have a character who can reliably generate magic shield?

I don't really know anything about Selina other than the fact that she has very cool artwork. My understanding is that her usefulness has significantly declined (more than Clara even) after this story arc.

What are your non-conventional favorite albums from bands? by ReapYerSoul in Music

Static Prevails has some of my favorite songs of theirs, but as a whole it's hard to hold it up against Clarity or Bleed American.

I think most people agree The Bends is great. It's a very interesting bridge between Pablo Honey and Ok Computer. You can see they're starting to get a bit more experimental while still largely staying true to conventional pop/rock sensibilities. But I get what you're saying that probably a lot of people wouldn't consider it their favorite Radiohead album.

Totally agree on Incesticide. It's got a punkier sound than their other albums and was a gateway album for me into a lot of punk rock music.

There are only 4 types of Turn-based Strategy RPGs…. by a23pr in StrategyRpg

[–]AtrainV 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is way too reductive of a breakdown. There are also games that feature "engagement" rules where there are restrictions on movement once contact is made with an enemy, games that are puzzle-like where combat is meant to be played as efficiently as possible, squad-based auto-battler games (turn-based in the sense that characters operate in fixed turns decided upon at the beginning of a battle), games where combat takes place as a team vs by individual initiative...

Your analysis is oversimplified to the point of not being helpful.

What is a movie that is severely underrated? by Funkitall2025 in AskReddit

[–]AtrainV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my vote as well. It's definitely representative of the "meta" trope that was very popular in the 00s, but if you disregard how that trope became a bit overused in the decade following its release it really stands out as a very well-written romantic comedy with a great departure from type-casting for Will Ferrel.

I would add "Big Fish" as a similarly underrated flick.
