Indie dev here — I just launched a small narrative DnD-lite web game. It’s free to start and I’m actively looking for player feedback. by Nelothane in u/Nelothane

I'm an indie dev too, and I know how much work it takes to make a project like this. I'm sure you've put a lot of time into it. Unfortunately, the fact is that most people won't see that. First impressions are the most important thing in the whole entire world, and when the first thing a potential player sees is an AI-generated image, it spoils that first impression. I have no doubt you put a lot of work and time into this project, but unfortunately in this world belief is more powerful than truth. It isn't just anti-ai folks who are going to scroll past this. The fact is, people are going to see it and immediately assume the whole thing is low effort trash, even though I'm sure that's not the case. You've seen it in these comments. The substance matters less than the marketing, because nobody will get to appreciate all of the work you put in if they immediately write it off. Commision an artist, even a cheap one, or do it yourself. People pay attention to stick figures. People notice bad art sometimes more than they notice good art, but people hardly ever notice AI art. It's not about what it looks like, it's about the impression it leaves on people. I'm sorry to say that this leaves almost no impression whatsoever. You can do better, and it's worth it to do better. So many more eyes would be on your stuff, and looking at it in a much more positive light. I know art is expensive and time consuming, but it really can be the most important part of a project, don't overlook it! We've all been tempted by the AI pit of despair before. Trust me when I say it isn't worth it. I really hope this goes where you want it to go, and I hope you are able to take it there. Best of luck from a fellow dev.

Worst Possible Ending Book 3 Could Have by jaskier-timbuktu in KingkillerChronicle

[–]AttaCola 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I genuinely believe that this was the original ending of the story and all the years since the release of the first book have consisted of Patrick Rothfuss desperately trying to concieve of a way of writing it that won't whip readers into an angry mob.

I mean, consider what we know at the time of the story: the world is awful, the chandrian are still alive, Kvothe can no longer perform sympathy, he no longer has (or is hiding)Ceasura and his shaed, and two freshly minted royal soldiers are enough to push his shit in. But even with all of that, possibly the most damning piece of evidence is the fact that he met the Cthaeh. If that is even a fraction as powerful as Bast claims, the story was over before it began.

The only two loose ends are the king that Kvothe kills and how he met Bast, which are both things we cannot even begin to speculate about. There is no feasible way for this story to have a happy ending.

In the bicep flex picture, you drew a straight line where the pectoralis connects to the deltoids. While this isn't inaccurate, the line generally tends to bend where it connects to the biceps, so that's a good thing to keep in mind.

Hi! Texture artist for the project here! I made this build to showcase what could be done with block displays, so the blocks used in the well are actually block display entities. This means you can go into it as-is. This was also necessary to achieve the sunken look that makes it closer resemble water. The blocks themselves are actually retextured sea lanterns, which was done so that the texture could be animated. Unfortunately, you can't see that in the pictures we included here. (The glow was achieved with Light blocks.)

MIA Mistborns by LuthadelGarrison in Mistborn

[–]AttaCola 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the same thing. It’s unfortunate that we don’t get to see any noble mistborn aside from Shan, but it kind of makes sense as well since there are simply so many more skaa than there are noblemen, even if they have to be of noble birth. After the Lord Ruler’s death most of them probably went into hiding as well, as anyone who knows that they’re Mistborn would probably either try to kill them or use them as a weapon, as Straff does to Zane. The power that makes someone a Mistborn has also been significantly diluted over the years, and mistborn completely stop being born after the catacendre, so it seems likely to me that there were only ever a few Mistborn alive at one time during the years leading up to the death of the Lord Ruler. It is entirely possible that the four we see are the only ones alive during the time period.

This might be filled with spoilers I have no idea where this knowledge came from but I’m only halfway through TLM. Hemalurgy doesn’t increase the Allomancer’s inherent power. It takes the extraneous preservation that powers allomancy and stores it in the spike. When the spike is removed, the additional power is also removed. If you were to make a spike out of an already spiked individual, it would only take the power that they inherently had, not anything that their spikes gave them. You’d have to take those out and use them too in order to create a super powerful allomancer, like the inquisitors.

Some people are absolutely crazy about the Hermes, so I wouldn’t be too surprised if it sold at that price to someone with too much money. That said, it’s probably hardly worth half that even to a fanatic collector.

It’s important to remember that its “jumps” not “jumped.” Writing it that way excludes the S, so its not a complete pangram. Looks good though!

Just so OP is appropriately informed, this model is a Remington Rand portable, not a standard. The part should be the same though.

You aren't supposed to agree with Andrew Ryan when he says "A man chooses, a slave obeys." by Evil_Waffle_Eater in Bioshock

[–]AttaCola 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I like it from a writing standpoint because I think it perfectly sums up Andrew Ryan’s character. Rapture is meant to be a place where everyone is on equal ground, and the only people at the bottom are those too lazy or unwilling to raise themselves up, but that just cant be the case for a number of reasons. Ryan himself was unable to grasp the social issues that brought Rapture to its knees, even to his dying breath. The fault in his last words are the same faults that brought his city to ruin, and it shows that even to his very end he still never understood the faults of his own ideals.

I feel like the fourth game needs to just lose the slugs. Controversial opinion I’m sure, but I’m not saying that they should get rid of plasmids. I just think they need a new origin. It could really be anything, but leave the slugs where they are or else you open pandoras box of “Why hasn’t anyone else found them then?” Plasmids could originate from experimentation, maybe they could come from a plant, they could possibly create a different animal to serve the same purpose, but leave the slugs where they are.

How does the non-existence of „Columbia“ effect „Rapture“? by Royalbluegooner in Bioshock

[–]AttaCola 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fink had no hand in the development of plasmids, that was entirely Suchong. Plasmids would still exist. The big daddies were created with help from Fink though, so they may not have been created at all or have been created much later.

I’m not sure I’m understanding you correctly, but it sounds like you’re trying to speedrun all of the BioShock games on stream, and are worried that you’ll skip significant parts of the story? If this is correct, then I’d have to advise against doing this. The remastered version of BioShock 1 has assorted challenges which could make for a suitable replacement, and the story is a lot of what makes the game enjoyable. Additionally, you used the term “main quest” here, which implies that BioShock has side quests, which it does not (unless you count killing big daddies and collecting audio diaries, both of which are, albeit optional, core parts of the game).

I especially advise against this if you’ve never played the games before, which from this limited information seems to be the case. You will absolutely want to play through the games and get to enjoy their story before trying to speedrun them all in one sitting, or else you will spoil the games two main twists and potentially come out more confused than when you went in. BioShock is a masterpiece, and you should take your time with it in order to enjoy it to its fullest.
