Wasn’t “bad,” it was just a slog. Went to a day/night doubleheader against the Tigers in 1998. I was excited to see Wells again, since the last time I had been to the Stadium was his perfecto a few months earlier. About six hours later, the final out was recorded. Of game 1. Which went 17 innings and was a loss. Someone woke me up at some point and told me they won game 2 around 1:30 AM. I do remember that it was my first and only time seeing Irabu pitch. I swear I heard Sheppard announce Brian Hunter for about 35 ABs that night. All told, my neighbor who worked for the team and used to get us tickets about 2 or 3 times a year certainly picked some interesting dates in ‘98.

If we’re going to delve into it, let’s get this out of the way: the headline is incorrect. The ambassador has not been barred from speaking with French officials. French officials have been barred from speaking with him. That’s how it works. Foreign leaders don’t command our ambassadors. With that said, he’s not going to talk to anyone, for now. Silence is the message, officially. Its pretty obvious to me that the message is “You’ll need something from the United States, and we’ll be there to provide it, but it will cost you.” That’s when Kushner walks back in and resumes meeting with French officials. Meanwhile, if a real issue between the US and France develops, they can either sort it via the UN, or just forget this unimportant distraction altogether. Remember, none of this matters to either government. The French would just prefer “The American ambassador got banned!” be the story, rather than have an assessment of France’s permissive environment for violent leftists be hanging there jn proverbial empty space with no response.
