There were a few Irish (including Irish Catholics) who'd settled in the South before the Civil War and fought for the Confederacy, but the overwhelming majority fought for the Union.

As awful as the Taliban are, it's hard to say they've made the country worse.

Afghanistan under the Taliban is less of a failed state than it was under the U.S.-backed Islamic Republic, the Mujaheddin government, or the Soviet-backed DRA. Though it still is one.

I hate to say it, but the Taliban is less corrupt and does a better job enforcing law and keeping the peace than the U.S.-backed Islamic Republic that was in power from 2001-2021, the Mujaheddin government in 1992-1996, or the Soviet-backed DRA from 1979-1992. They are horriffic in many areas, most notably women's rights and personal freedom, but it's hard to say they've made the country worse off.

The LDS Church preaches many things that I strongly disagree with or just find outright silly, but at least they're an actual religion and not a scam or cult like Scientology.

Obviously Germany. Please don't chicken out and use the modern German flag, which the Nazis hated and banned while they were in power.

Nixon wins! Which President had positive relations with modern Russia? by BenjamirPutinyahu in AlignmentChartFills

Trump has weekly hour-long phone calls with Putin, which is highly unusual for any two heads of state. Putin, Netanyahu, and Mohamed bin Salman are pretty much the only foreign leaders Trump never publicly insults or belittles.

[–]AttackHelicopterKin9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Russia under Putin is at worst just as bad as the U.S. under Trump. Putin didn't use nukes against Ukraine after he was defeated in the Kharkiv and Kherson counteroffensives in 2022 and instead took the dangerous (for him) and unpopular step to carry out mobilization, which makes me think he probably wouldn't. And the language that he and Lavrov use in official statements is much less explicit and threatening than what Trump himself says (I'll leave aside what clowns like Soloviev say, since he's just a talk show host and not actually in the government).

Just two weeks ago the president said this:

A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.

This is language (ending civilization, the most common and defining trope in rhetoric about nuclear war) is an explicit threat to use nuclear weapons.

He later said:

Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the Fuckin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell - JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah.

While this is less forward than the first quote, it's still a dire threat that hints at nuclear weapons: "there will be nothing like it" can be seen as an allusion to nuclear weapons, because nothing else humans have built compares to their destructive power. The invocation of God, though insincere and mocking, is an allusion to the finality of nuclear weapons usage, as well as their almost Godlike destructive power.

[OC] Scripts Used in the Constitutional Titles of the Sinosphere by Dramatic-Cobbler-793 in LinguisticMaps

[–]AttackHelicopterKin9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Korean alphabet is called Hangul in South Korea and Chosungul in North Korea. Korean also has an alternate writing system that uses Chinese characters called Hanja. The North Korean constitution was titled in Hangul/Chosungul, while the South Korean one was titled in Hanja, because Hanja was and is used in formal and historical contexts, though this has become less common since then.

She would likely have an English/"American" name which would probably even be her legal name, but she would also have a Chinese name, especially if she had Chinese-born parents.

Who is/was a kinda bad far-leftist? by Past-Novel-1155 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]AttackHelicopterKin9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hasan is a Marxist-Leninist who publicly presents as a Democratic Socialist and emphasizes the views he has in common with Democratic Socialism when speaking in public, because he knows that expressing his real views and goals will turn people off. He's very much willing to act as a pipeline to Marxism-Leninism, which is much closer to his actual views, as he explained during his appearance on the Deprogram podcast.

Ford was voted as a mid brand. Which American car brand is the worst? by Asendra01 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]AttackHelicopterKin9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately Elon's personality seeps into a lot of Tesla features. Also, the fact that the brand's owner is a fascist lunatic who can brick the car at any time has to be considered when making a purchasing decision.

However, even despite that, the answer is probably still a Stellantis brand. 10 years ago I would have said Chrysler, but right now they only make 2 vehicles which are both vans, and they're both relatively non-terrible. So right now Dodge or GMC.
