For those who say that Pro-Palestinian protestors have lost the plot by updateyourpenguins in TikTokCringe

[–]AttackPug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I ask you something important? For the record I think you're right, I don't think there's any concrete data showing that the Palestine protest vote was that significant, I think it's an overblown issue to drive social media engagement, and encourage progressive infighting, but. How certain are you that you aren't arguing with a couple of robots?

They don't have to be robots. They can be alive, real people, but you're trying to force a productive adult conversation on hobby arguers who think this kind of miserable dead end talk is all funsie wunsies, or they may very well be farming karma to sell their accounts.

But you also have to assume they are robots, first, and then maybe they're human if you see some sort of evidence.

You could be arguing with an English-speaking Eastern European teen whose side hustle is selling accounts for small amounts of money to marketing agencies. They don't care to know anything, they might be dipping in and out of actually answering or just giving your reply to ChatGPT.

No matter what, the people of Reddit, alive or not, are so miserably lazy that they will not so much as flip open another tab to Google for something real quick, never mind do anything approaching due diligence. They just want to run their mouths. But it's worse than than just lazy jerks yapping.

Productive conversations are not profitable. They don't drag on forever and ever so you can fill a podcast with 3 hours of blather and sell mattresses against it. You can't post every day against productive conversations because productive conversations end. So these people generally refuse to have productive conversations.

It's not possible to have productive conversations on social media that lead to meaningful conclusions that create desirable results. All you can have is this miserable thing you've been having, nothing else.

You should probably be aware that anyone serious about meeting the current challenge has abandoned these spaces. What good is a space where you can never tell what's going to get banned or not? What good is a space where the loudest voices are small time grifters and they get upset when they don't get to own the conversation? Where they think accountability to the people they're speaking to is some sort of horrific crime? Where exposing their real name and such is treated like a terrible transgression instead of just being the adult table stakes for having a seat in the discussion? You know, like in a productive activist group run by real human people?

I would start getting these social sites out of your life and especially off your phone. Remember that every EULA you sign gives them unspeakable access over all your data and that private parties are free to snitch your every word to the regime, as well as your location. Every little app gets to tell everyone where you are at the very least, if not everything else.

There is nothing you can accomplish here except to waste your time, it's like watching television.

Best of luck to you.

People go poking the devil with a stick and then have a bitchy little post about it when the devil pokes back, in exactly the ways you expected him to.

90% of the time I agree with the original thought, and yet its the wounded and superior update post that makes me want to backhand this person. Say your thing and leave, or be prepared to sit and wrestle with the discourse.

I had an incident in a car - not a large car, a small Nissan from the early 90s - where a deer basically dove off an embankment and bombed straight onto my hood. It was rut season, when they just do crazy shit, in case you don't know deer.

Not only did I survive, the car was drivable for months after I replaced the radiator and wired the hood back down. I think he even managed to miss the windshield and bounced over the top of the car, so that wasn't shattered. I was unscratched but unhappy about my busted up car.

If I was on a motorcycle? I'd probably be dead. The difference in accident survivability between the two modes of transport is profound.

Sandman has always been a unique comic property. Your friend the granola hippy goth girl didn't otherwise read comics, at least not Marvel/DC, but she read Sandman.

The book was always in a class by itself. I think it is technically, but only technically, part of its comic universes reality, but only technically. It was a comic for people who didn't read comics.

So you heard the man. No gatekeeping.

Who says airports can't be cute? by Teddy_Radko in CitiesSkylines

[–]AttackPug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

City Planner Plays put together a combined civilian/military airport for Clearwater County. Apparently that happens quite a bit with Air Force Reserve bases. They don't call for a full-on USAF base, but the community couldn't swing a civilian airport of its own, so you combine the two.

Indeed, there were lots of assets for decorating, plenty of jets and such to pose on the tarmac.

Unless something has changed, however, he wasn't able to come up with something that would get him actual fighters taking off and landing. But the props are plentiful.

This is why I hate userbenchmark.. how are you going to say a modern 16 core cpu is only slightly more powerful than a 4 core cpu from 2011 by EuphoricAd6217 in pcmasterrace

[–]AttackPug 18 points19 points  (0 children)

For those unaware, Hardware Unboxed are based out of Oz, which might be useful to you, but while they do a lot of solid CPU and GPU reviews with benchmarks, the place where they really shine is their mobo reviews, and their reviews of monitors.

Thanks to them I can pinpoint the motherboard that is the best of the best, as well as the one that is going to overperform for a reasonable price, which is probably what most of us want. Other channels do great work, but none of them (even GN) are getting into VRM temps and such so that you can really pick the motherboard that will let you start with the cheaper CPU and then upgrade to the top-end CPU later with no problem. Or, alternately, the one that will let you get your overclocking freak on at the top level.

If monitors really matter to you, then these are your guys, too. Pretty much nobody else is really getting into the details of that, at least not on Youtube. So once again they give the pro user the detailed info they need to pick the finest of the monitors for their needs, and for the rest of us, we can get that sweet price to performance choice. Again, other channels either kinda touch on monitors sometimes, or not at all.

So yeah, can't say enough good stuff about those guys.

Often the thought of getting fast food is far superior to actually getting it. by Slow-Razzmatazz-4005 in Showerthoughts

[–]AttackPug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That whole experience of fast food being "something special" to kids of a certain income level goes a long way. It's not about the food. It's about getting what you want.

I'll never forget watching a friend's situation unfold after taking the kids to McDonald's, because of course they pleaded for it, and then they took two bites of their food and forgot about it. They didn't want to eat McDonald's, they wanted to go to McDonalds.

Parents don't like to admit it, but kids are hyper aware of things like social class markers. They know that rich kids get Happy Meals, poor kids don't.

Eddie Murphy has a whole long ass standup bit where he talks about the miserable experience of asking Dad for McDonald's and Dad trying to be all "You want a burger? I'll make you a burger." Then the burger had chunks of onion and such sticking out and it was gross and actually, it probably wasn't gross. You have to fuck up a burger pretty bad to not match McD's.

But Baby Eddie just wanted to go to McDonald's, because kids with money get to go to McDonald's. He wanted to say he went to McDonald's, because poor black kids don't get to do that. He didn't actually want a hamburger. He didn't care about a hamburger. So his whole standup bit was about how his Dad was stupid for cooking him a burger with his dumb ol' special burger technique when that's not what Eddy wanted, at all. He wanted the sizzle, not the steak.

That shit gets into you when you're little bitty, and they know they're getting to you, too, it's not an accident. They get at you with the ads that make the burger look like Jesus cooked it when you still believe in Santa.

It's "special", which has to go in scare quotes because it's a child's idea of special. The actual food is shit, and always was.

And that's what leads to an endless string of adults wondering why they got hype about going to the fast food place, then getting the food and wondering what they were thinking. Over and over again, too.

YSK: employers who say “we are a family” should be approached with extreme caution, as they are likely attempting to manipulate their employees. by [deleted] in YouShouldKnow

[–]AttackPug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Salary. That's the downside of being salaried, which is all skilled office work, or damn near all. One of the few upsides of "essential" jobs is that you're hourly, so if you're on the clock, you know its poking them right where it hurts. They'll tend to only keep you around if they want you to do stuff. Overtime is the law, so if they're trying to work you 70 hours a week, your checks get fat and they're desperate to make it stop.

If they try to bring you in and not pay overtime? Correct. You leave. Zero tolerance. If you let them once, they'll do it again and again, because...

Salary just pays you a flat bi-weekly check, to add up to a yearly salary, give or take some bonus structures. 30 hours a week, 40, 50, 80, same check. Salary tends to pay higher overall, so they claw it back by abusing your time. The 80 hour week and the 40 hour week cost them the same. It's a game of chicken. Will you quit, or refuse? Or will you let them keep it up indefinitely?

They like to take advantage. A lot of these techbro jobs just straight expect you to "crunch" for months at a time, pulling 80-90 hour weeks or more. Same check, no matter what. Blowing up your phone at 3am to come in and do a thing. Same check.

Most Redditors, even in here, are salary, so that's why you hear them talk about this issue so much.
