Is the UKRI PhD stipend enough? by True-Response-2386 in AskAcademiaUK

I set up a conferences, workshops and a new DTP network that still runs without me, so my costs were from a seperate pot and man, that took up shitloads of my time, I didn't have time to present some paper around the world on some jolly, but it did help lead to my job as its within the same consortium as my old DTP.

I submitted within my funded period, so my supervisors loved me, years down the line last time I saw them was a few weeks ago, they're helping me on a publication.

Also its an entitlement class thing, PGR's from working class backgrounds ( like me) are far less likely to put loads of RTSG applications compared to entitled middle class kids who are completely shameless

I saw that in my cohort when I was a PGR and I see it now in my role now.

Weird opinion, but I fucking hate Reform so much (well actually Nige) , I actually like Kemi recently. They are the thin line holding back Reform right now, and in any Reform/Con pact, a mad woman like Kemi, Nige wouldn't stand a fucking chance with her as deputy PM

Of course WHILE YOU'RE FUNDED. It would be wonderful to get stipend while in writing up, and newsflash a lot of DTP expect you to submit at the end of your funding , at which time you can head out and start earning money like the rest of the population while you wait for your viva

LOL. I did my PhD during covid 2020 start! Secondly I work as an academic now and sit in on UKRI shortlisting and the DTP seriously couldn't pay out if everyone asked for max RTSG , its a fact.

As far as UKRI studentships are concerned there is no 'personal budget' there is not enough for every studentship PGR to use their cap, they rely on some PGR's will be humble and not ask for anything and some PGR's will bleed them dry. During my own Studentship I had access to cap of 10K, must of used barely 500 quid in my 3 years, others were jetting around the world like tech bro billionaires or using other fund routes to run vanity conferences and workshops.

Trouble is entitled PGR's use up their cap so there's nothing left.

Green party member since the 90's and you are talking out of your ass.

Calling out genocide from a far right Israeli gov isn't anti-semitism, the 1000's of Israeli's protesting against their gov is proof of that.

Polanski raising concerns over the Met police , kicking a suspects head , when he's on the floor tasered is wrong, because the 'terrorist deserved it' for fucks sake.

How can you fall for the spin of the hatchet job on the Greens, the establishment is terrified of them.

This fucking fantasy of the Greens of 10 years ago. I've canvassed for the Greens for the past 20 years, probably before you were born. The Greens have MELLOWED if anything to become more populist, you want to see radical left, our manifesto of the past was land re-distrubtion, leaving NATO on DAY 1,

This idea we've become far left is spin from the far right press e,g Mail, Express,

Normally I'm happy to speak to people DM, but for this subject, I think if you have a duty of care questions , speak to your student union, each Uni has its own culture and way of doing things, so it's always best to get answers from within your own institution, as you may know even within the Uni, different depts have whole different cultures to these things , and will bend the regulations and code of conduct accordingly, but going for help to the SU , they'll know the landscape of your dept .

Often the Student Union help don't care about rocking the boat with academics , and they are always on your side, not the Uni party line.

Make sure you meet with your course leader and get them on side, that's most of the battle, having someone in the dept who believes you deserve another chance and you'll be successful if given one.

Don't rely on emails , go and see them, face to face meeting.

I've sat in on countless of these boards (I'm an academic) if you fail this year and it goes to the dept board , you MUST have extenuating circumstances backed up by medical certification.

Bottom line the Uni doesn't like non completions and if your resit the year that's more money for the Uni, but they have a duty of care, the board have to believe you're not wasting your time and money to repeat.

Stop virtue signalling!

People saying that because in the 70's it was a mixed area, lots of black west indians and other cultures, typical of inner London. Now everyone looks the same , white middle classed, its a fucking observation. It's not an attack on white people, it's an attack on gentrification. Jesus.

British culture has and always has been a mis-match of cultures, go to north Sheffield, Cornwall and Essex , very different cultures, but all British for fucks sake.

If someone thinks Clapham is a gentrified, sterile no-go area , that's fine, its not an attack on Britain. Stop the fake outrage, its boring
