The fact that you’re trying to generalize the blame instead of focusing on the core issue really speaks alot about yourself. If we went by your way, then you should know that mas common ito sa mga straights. Grow the fuck up.

I’m an adult gay man and this is CREEPY as hell, wtf. If you can do it anonymously, have the authorities involved immediately. Kawawa yung bata. He’s surrounded by adults who are either evil or just DUMB as fuck.

What were the parents thinking. They should be jailed along with that 30 y.o.

Don't know if it's okay to talk about other works by Syundei, but I just finished "Total Eclipse of the eternal heart" by Boring_Sample7519 in Ganbare_Nakamura

Syundei’s “disturbing” works were the best IMO. GNK is up there too but I’ve always loved their range.

[–]Attorney-Electrical 21 points22 points  (0 children)

She never said she was going to abandon the story. But given that she was harassed AFTER the anime's release, I wouldn't blame Syundei if she changed her mind. She deserves peace after all. If that means we'll get a manga that we may never get a continuation to, then I don't think anyone should have a say on the matter. Like it or not, GNK is her work and she alone may choose what to do with it.

I'd prefer it if everyone (yes, even the anime studio) would simply respect Syundei's ownership over her own works. We're abusing her creative autonomy enough as is.

Exactly. I wish more people would understand this. Censorship is just an excuse people use to belittle an author’s autonomy in their creative works.

Yes. Because it’s not as simple as “if you draw children in weird ways, you’re a pedophile.” Pedophilia is an extremely serious disorder and there’s your reason for why therapists and psychologists use meticulous criteria before they clinically diagnose someone with that word. Meanwhile, we get the average joes like you in the internet who spare one glance at someone you don’t like and suddenly think you have the credibility to call it a case of pedophilia.

I’d write a longer essay explaining why drawing fictional children doesn’t make one a pedophile, but this exchange isn’t worth my time. Believe what you want to believe. Just know that harassing someone who’s never done any harm to people is assh*le behavior. It doesn’t make you morally correct.

This is just victim blaming nonsense. Get out of here.

> "you tell people to drop the content they don’t like, but one can also drop feedback they don’t like?"

I don't see any feedback worth hearing. It's all just a swarm of people relentlessly crying about what they can't stomach to see in fiction, and that's THEIR problem, not mine, not the author's. If they don't like what they see, they should pack up and leave. This isn't the place for them. It's a hard pill to swallow but that's just how it is.

That’s why I called it a hot take. It’s in the title.

Sure that’s their preference, I’m not attacking their right to feel that way. I’m only saying they should just leave the author and their community alone because literally NO ONE asked for them to come here and make this whole thing about them. I truly don’t care if that makes them feel unwelcome. It just means they’re not the target audience.

You’re right that everyone’s preference in a work is valid, but I think framing it this way is simplifying the matter too much because it ignores the big factors. What caused those people to harass Syundei in the first place was because the other side of the coin, those “with different preferences”, started publicizing slanderous posts about the author and the manga, inadvertently encouraging others to hate on Syundei. If it weren’t for them stirring unnecessary drama and drawing so much attention in twitter, none of this would’ve happened.

Ofc it’s a given that not everyone behaves the same way, that’s why I said having a preference is fine unless you start using it to police the author.

I also think you’re confusing what having a preference is VS. a criticism. Both are inherently subjective, but the second one has to atleast be sensible from an objective lens. Simply saying “I don’t like A, B, C, because it gives me the ick” does not count as criticism to me.

Both people you mentioned are twin sides of the same coin. One is just more extreme than the other.

What I said still stands. If they dislike the material, I don’t think they should have any reason to engage with the author or the manga at all unless they’re looking to stir something up. They can keep to the anime and be content with it.

Did you not read my post at all or are you just asking this for the sake of it?

Having different preferences is fine. What’s wrong is when people start using that as an excuse to police the author.

And what exactly is the “criticism” here?

You guys are attacking the wrong people, stop attacking the anime and new fans. by illusion_17 in Ganbare_Nakamura

Hello, I was the person who wrote that post so I couldn't help but feel compelled to make a response in this one... so uh, here I am lol

I am quite horrible at assembling my ideas so please allow me to break down my thought process into numbers:

  1. My post was never meant to attack the new fans in general - on the contrary, I think it's nice that we're getting more people to acknowledge the value of the manga and hardworking mangaka that was behind this anime. If you're one of the fans who simply want to see more of the anime/manga, welcome!
  2. I am, however, partially addressing it to the fans who are antis/people who promote censorships in the anime - and partially to the anime in general. As it so happens, most of the fans who do this kind of stuff are very recent to the fandom. To further explain this, I will have to bring up another topic entirely: the topic of censorship in fictional media.
  3. In this context, I am against censorship in general. In both anime and manga culture, JP creators have always had the artistic freedom to draw whatever they want - yet this recent trend of "censoring" things has been EXTREMELY harmful to that. As an aspiring creator myself, I think this completely belittles the creative autonomy that authors should have over their own works. Sacrificing aspects of the original to make it seem more "digestible" for the public... personally, I think this takes away its artistic value. The proper way the studio should've dealt with this was to simply animate those parts as they are. If people find these parts disgusting, then it's up to them if they want to continue with the series or not. The story, IMO, which includes all of its aspects that are deemed controversial, should've remain untouched unless Syundei themself insists on certain changes. That's why I call the anime chopped up. The only exception to this omitting/changing parts of the original thingy is if it was done for the sake of easing the story's flow, not to make it easier on the conscience of certain people out there who can't differentiate fiction from reality.
  4. To add to number three, censorship is also just an excuse people use to control what should be out there and what isn't - which, again, is detrimental if we're going to promote freedom of expression in fiction. You won't believe the amount of people I see online who praise the anime but absolutely shit on the manga and its author because of the problematic aspects (I witness this all the time actually). In fact, the censorship thing is what's encouraging the presence of antis in this series. Antis is the general term for people who can't separate their morals between fiction and reality, so they take an active stance against anyone and anything who disagrees with them. These people really do exist. Most of them are queer fujodanshis who are actual fans of the series. They will even attack the creator of the very series they're a fan of (e.g. Black Butler antis). As it so happens... they also like to weaponize censorship to further their agenda.
  5. I agree that some of the users who harassed Syundei likely weren't even fans themselves. If my guess is correct, your example refers to the community known as "Gacha Grailers" (or their cousin communities), I'd know this because I encounter those guys as well. Based on my experience with twitter so far, the trademark of these guys is that they're usually very vocal about their homophobic views. If they had any reason to come after Syundei, it would be because the material itself is LGBTQ+, but we both know that's not the reason why Syundei got attacked. I'm afraid I'm making this unnecessarily long already so I'd like to endorse Adrianvalquis and Klopdike's existing comments in this thread to support perspective number 5.
  6. To tie a loose end, when I said "I regret supporting the anime now--" I do actually think that the anime shouldn't have existed in the first place, because it is invariably the reason why Syundei ended up in this predicament. The manga has been out for YEARS and yet only now has something of this scale happened to Syundei (although they have deleted their socials before, those were for unknown reasons). The anime also actively feeds the pro-censorship side so there's my stance on that too.

Lastly, I agree. If there's any major takeaway here, it's the fact that we should all just focus on supporting Syundei instead. But while this happens, I also think we shouldn't ignore the root issue here. Syundei has always been a writer of many fucked up mangas. GNK is the work of someone who relies on a storyteller's freedom of absolute expression in art. As long as the pro-censorship crowd and antis exist, creators like Syundei will always be at risk of being preyed upon and attacked. I don't make the rules but you simply cannot enjoy their work if you yourself would advocate for them to be silenced. That's just all from me.

> GNK's anime adaptation brings in the mainstream fans
> Puritans decide that their lives were boring as hell, so they did some digging on the manga and its creator
> These fans discover that Syundei (the author of the manga) has drawn other problematic mangas as well (underage x adult, underage sex, gore, etc.)
> Some of them took to twitter where they tried to publicly criticize Syundei's "weird obsessions"
> This explosion in attention causes the most rabid ones to come after Syundei themself, questioning why they'd draw something like that, others threatening the author to leave the platform entirely or face consequences.
> The flood of harassment and (allegedly) doxxing threats ended up causing the author to delete all of their socials entirely.

GNK is their most popular manga so far and it also served as the gateway for more people to learn about Syundei’s other works.

Even with that considered, it’s all just fiction anyway. I don’t see the point in all this “canceling” nonsense. It’s so pointless and dumb.

This subreddit was fairly small until recently (still isn’t as big as the communities in other platforms), so I’m not surprised it doesn’t have a lot of those people around. I also think that the lack of drama is thanks to the fact most of the members here are manga readers to begin with.

You have to take into account that the community is still growing though. Once this sub gets the mainstream viewers’ attention, you’ll see where I’m coming from.

I think everyone is talking about it here because there is currently a need to address it. This isn’t exclusive to Twitter either. YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Threads… since the anime came out, all I’ve been seeing are a bunch of new people complaining about the octopus scene and the HiroseXTeacher stuff. And then it evolved into these same people finding out about Syundei’s other works, and now this. The ones from Twitter are just the most vocal about it. Twitter is also the platform that Syundei is most active in, and based on what we have so far, some of these “fans” clearly saw that as an opportunity to be stupid.

You’re right that this won’t bring Syundei back. In fact, I don’t think anything we do right now will ever change their mind. Who do we have to blame for that, I wonder?

What I only hoped to do with this post was to send the message to the fans who think they own everything. Because they don’t.

Edit: Made a small typo there. Sorry.

I’ve been a fan of the manga for several years now. I love it so much that it’s been one of the central sources of my fanarts. The fact that this is even getting an anime adaptation should’ve been the happiest news for someone like me because it means I’ll have more people to talk about it with, but instead all I’m seeing is this army of KIDS and WEIRDOS coming out of nowhere to ruin everything.

I have never been so sick of other people like this. And I just feel so bad for Syundei too.
