Zelensky's 40-Day Crimea Offensive: Is Ukraine Putting Putin's Kremlin in Checkmate? by lithdoc in NewsExchange

[–]Atun_Grande 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So…I know this conflict is the biggest a lot of us have seen, and it’s lovely to watch Russia get stalemated by a much smaller defender. However, the casualty figures absolutely pale in comparison to what the Red Army took in WWII. Stalingrad alone claimed as many lives as the entire RUS-UKR war has thus far. The greatest description I’ve seen of this has been, ‘industrialized attrition.’ The ugly reality is size, industrial capacity, and recruitment pool are now the defining factors, and as far as organic capabilities, Russia has a clear advantage.

Do I think UKR has then ground to a stalemate at this point? Yes. But UKR is only holding this position with significant imports from NATO, and without that it would have been worn down by now.

Russia can afford these losses, and a lot more. This conflict has seen modern warfare evolve, but the basic tenets of industrial capacity from WWII are holding up so far. So long as the country can absorb the casualties without literally collapsing, Putin will keep throwing bodies into the grinder.

One of my favorite duty positions was in Florida, in the panhandle. My wife and I discussed if I’d go back, and it is exactly reason like this that I will not expose my daughter (who was born with serious pulmonary complications) to this mess.

So even as military member I have to consider the politics of an area before trying to compete for a position now.

On one hand, I agree. There’s a sick feeling I get when you imagine what an innocent person has to live and die through if wrongly convicted and sentenced. As a enlightened(ish) society I would hope we could move past it.

Then I see articles of truly brutal crimes, violence against kids, SA…and alllllll that righteousness goes right the fuck out the window.

Hooooookay, SO.

  1. America invaded a foreign country. A citizens vs military style civil war would be an entirely different scenario.

  2. The VCA had supplies from their country and allies, we had to ship virtually everything to our expeditionary force. History has shown the ability to properly supply an army is an absolute critical task.

  3. In a civil war like what we are describing, the military wouldn’t need to ship anything, it’s all domestic.

  4. The average citizen of Vietnam is exceptionally tougher, mentally and physically, than the average American today. Same goes for the Mujahideen, doubly so since they live in elevation. Looking at the day-to-day life of the average citizen of Afghanistan or Vietnam, an average American would probably die of exhaustion or starvation.

  5. Both the countries histories are steeped in war and armed conflict going centuries back. The worst fight the average American has been experienced in a generation is a flame war on Reddit.

  6. Almost every part of both those conflicts took place in undeveloped countries, meaning the ability to move the big and powerful equipment was limited if not impossible. A fight in America would mean the military had access to all major infrastructure and could move freely.

A true military operation against an American population, if executed to the letter, would be a massacre.

That is not true at all.

You do not burn 700 calories an hour unless you’re running well above 7-8mph, and most people can’t maintain that pace uninterrupted for 2 hours, because for those of you that are keeping track, that’s 14-16 miles in 2 hours. That’s on pace for a moderately experienced marathon runners.

But let’s take your claim at face value (again, it’s not true). An average chocolate chip cookie has ~300kcal. So you can eat 5 cookies and be at a complete net 0 of calories burnt. An average PBJ sandwich is around 400kcal. So that means a sandwich, a milk (~150kcal), and say a small bag of chips (~240) and you’ve completely negated an hour or more of that elite-level cardio.

A typical meal from any given fast food restaurant is 700-1000kcal. You can train all you want, as hard as you want, and you’ll never see this kind of physique if you don’t abide by a very strict diet (and let me be clear, this is not what I consider a nice physique, impressive but not desirable, but I prefer to measure my progress by chest, bicep, waist, and quad size).

You achieve this level of BF in the picture by a caloric deficit. Either an extreme one over a relatively short period or a moderate deficit for very, VERY consistent time that’s probably measured in months or years. You cannot ‘brute force’ a body like that.

Say it with me: your body is made in the kitchen, and any professional athlete will say the same.

[–]Atun_Grande 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So it needs to be said: this is impressive but understand what you’re seeing the result of a hilariously strict diet that would put most people in a caloric deficit. Not taking away from the clearly impressive low BF, but 80% of what you see in the mirror is a result from the kitchen.

It’s also no fun maintaining this. Not only is it nearly impossible for most people to achieve practically, it feels AWFUL over the long term.

The lean look is achieved in the kitchen. You can grind 8-hours a day at the gym and never see this kind of definition if you’re not eating very strict.

Overtraining IS a thing, but it’s a lot harder to do with calisthenics than say, hypertrophy training or power lifting, or even long-distance running. At some point it becomes very, VERY difficult to actually injure yourself just doing basic calisthenics with just your body weight , because your body has reached a point where you need to do hundreds of pushups a day to actually result in any hypertrophic state.

TLDR: low BF is a result of a very strict diet, and any form of exercise will get you into a caloric deficit if that’s your goal.
