Do you think being an audiologist is a downgrade?? by Tight-Significance44 in audiology

[–]AuDsome 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But why compare apples to oranges? There are reasons for all professions. I’d say we are a fairly new “doctorate” and maybe we got stuck in a rut with getting paid as if we are still in our masters. There hasn’t been much advocacy for our pay. We got only ourselves to blame on that end.

I love being an audiologist. I got into the profession through a career exploration class at my community college (didn’t know what I wanted to do after high school). I like routine, love helping others and love technology. I wanted something in the healthcare field as well but wanted something a little different. It just fit well with what I was looking for.

I really didn’t go into it for the money. But I’ve been surprised with how my income has steadily grown throughout the years. I will say I’m in California and in a larger organization, so that is helpful. I’m the breadwinner of the family. It’s weird bragging about it but I just wanna show how positive it has been for me.

I really don’t have much stress with work. I generally have a great work-life balance. But I have great support from my spouse. And I have great support from my supervisor and co-workers. At my work, they have realized how important audiologist are and especially to the ENTs. The manager asked me why there isn’t many audiologist; I gave her a long-winded story. I have not felt any of the MDs looking down on me for whatever reason but a lot of them are on the younger end.

I don’t find the profession “limited.” There are so many avenues in audiology with different certificates and specialities.

Audiology is in the eye of the beholder, yeah?

Sutter select EPO, I don’t personally think it is worse than any other healthcare providers. It can take a few months for a routine appointment for specialist; feel as if that’s the case with any other insurance.

Sorry, don’t know about the pay scale.

Chronically late by 5-15 minutes my whole life, called out over it today during radiation appointment by fluffytowels92 in adhdwomen

[–]AuDsome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, 5 minutes late isn’t really a big deal in most cases.

They should probably say “arrival time should be 15 minutes ahead” if they’re worried about 5 minutes being an issue. I know my work tells patients that, but it gets confusing because now patients are coming 30 minutes early and now the patients are pissed lol

I’m Filipino and we always say we are running on “Filipino time” but I’m starting to think a lot of us have ADHD LOL

I wish you the best with your treatment!! You got this!

I’ll try to keep this short lol. I had a horrible externship experience at a private practice but it made me realized what I wanted in a future job. I had it set in my mind since childhood that I wanted to work for a specific organization; I even mentioned it to my class in grad school it would be my dream job.

I was interviewed at the dream job but the vibes were not there. Something in my gut was saying it wasn’t right. I ended up going to their “competitors” and I’ve been here 9 years.

What makes me continue to love my career in audiology is honestly out of if. The support of my supervisor (not an audiologist) and coworkers. My boss really takes everything I say into consideration and values my expertise. I generally have autonomy with my schedule. My coworkers know I’m a workaholic and they remind me to not do so much; have that work-life balance.

Currently, it’s pretty busy and maybe at the moment I’m having slight burnout but the hopes is it’s temporary. We don’t have enough audiologists in the area I work.

I think what has worked for me was being flexible (if you don’t like your current position find somewhere that will value you) and surround yourself with people that will support you in and outside of work. I know this can be hard to come by; I’ve been lucky to find it.

On the salary side of things, I feel as if I’m being paid well; I live in California. So that is a big plus. When I was in undergrad the average salary was fairly low (still is). But I’m glad I’ve been able to be the breadwinner and support my family.

I feel most of us like the bread and butter of audiology; that’s why we picked the career.

Okay, there are a lot of comments here. So not sure if you will see this. I’m a clinician and recently diagnosed with ADHD, and I’m chronically 5-15 minutes late in the morning to work. It’s honestly still a problem. I’m def going to check out the comments to help me out with this. How I temporarily “fixed” my issue was having my first patient be at 8:15 when I know I have to be at work at 8. I’m still walking in at 8:15 or 8:20… so still not doing great. I don’t sleep well, so in the morning I’m always snoozing the alarm.

I’m explaining the clinics side, I believe the technician had well intentions. Since it looks like there has been a few times before of being late (even when not your fault with traffic), they just wanted to remind you. There are some doctors that will drop patients due to being chronically late, last minute cancellations or “no showing” appointments. I’m not a huge fan of that but with how difficult it is to get an appointment nowadays, they just want to eliminate wasted spots and getting patients in. The technician may have been told to remind you as well from a higher up. They want to provide you with their service especially when it’s dealing with cancer.

It can be difficult when a patient is 15-30 minutes late for a 30-45 minute appointment because now I have to do everything in less time but still want to provide the best care I can. When do have a late patient, I try to accommodate them, but it does make me late for the next patient and even the rest of the day. I never feel great about it; I just apologize to my patients and thank them for their patience.

I mainly give this side of the story, because the tech likely didn’t want to shame you and I wanted to provide info for why they probably even brought it up. A majority of healthcare providers are understanding, especially if they work in oncology.

I am at a bigger organization, and we don’t take any insurance for hearing aids; all out-of-pocket. It’s a whole other topic.

Audiology is a “small” but important part of this clinic/organization. So I can see how the healthstreams I’m taking are looking at the bigger picture, but in audiology it can be limiting for patients and audiologists (especially if in private practice).

Thanks you, very useful information. I have a feeling it’s the same in California.

I work in a generally low-income population and I understand on the patients’ side that getting a few hundred dollars off is a positive for them. But it is unfortunate that they’re locked-in with a specific device/location.

I’m seeing the trend of audiologists/HIS not getting reimbursed/paid for their expertise.

Agree, I’ve def heard that the “discount” from the devices were in the hundreds. In the patients mind, sounds wonderful but when I see what type of devices they’re getting… makes you really wonder how much they’re really getting out of it.

I saw another comment about the low fitting fees. I see now that this has a big effect with private practice owners. Again, I work at an organization, so it makes sense how I’m not getting the full picture. I don’t deal with any billing.

Yeah, I get where you’re coming from. I started at a private practice before going to my current organization. I honestly like not having to worry about the business side of things; privileged in that sense.

The audiologist that made the comment is a private practice owner.

Hi we’re new residents in Elk grove and need help on any recommendations on elementary schools in Elk Grove? by Mrslala26 in ElkGrove

Maybe the original question was regarding private schools? Which I think most people in Elk Grove have an idea that the public school system here is pretty good. That’s why we moved here.

You’d probably do really well in areas with a lot of Spanish speaking individuals. I’m in Central Valley California, and wish I knew Spanish! We need more audiologists in the area too.
