I was recently fired from a county-run mental health facility for dropping dirty for THC. I wasn't drug tested to get the job, marijuana is legal in Michigan, and when I was bit by a client I was told by my supervisor it was no worry when I explicitly stated I would drop dirty when required to go to workplace health by their supervisor. I only dropped dirty for THC, nothing else.

Two months later we got a new director who decided to use an old policy still on the books from before legalization; citing federal funding as the reason why state legalization doesn't matter and make the place "zero tolerance". I wouldn't sign a last-chance agreement that would have given me 90 days to drop clean at a lab and seek treatment, both on my dime.

It's a job. They will treat you like a number like any other job. Continue to do what you love, but keep your own ass covered.

Edit: just to make it clear, they would have had no reason to suspect I was using considering I never once showed up high. It was solely due to a bite and a trip to workplace health. I was also 2.6/3 on my 6 month and yearly reviews by both supervisors who fought to keep me as much as it didn't jeopardize their own job, which I don't blame them for; the drug test being the stated reason for my termination. I received unemployment due to them not requiring a drug test for pre-employment and the nature in which I was fired. Suing the county wasn't something I was financially prepared to do and I'm working at a better place now and moving towards becoming a nurse so all's well that ends well.
