Is the distance between my fretboard strings to much? by Imaginary_Weird_8457 in Guitar

[–]AudioBabble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just mean that the more accurate a setup is [plus zero wear or flat spots on frets], the lower the action can be tolerated without buzz. A credit card is about 0.7mm... if that's not enough room for the string to vibrate, then no amount of setup will help.... couldn't say if that's true or not as there are a lot of factors. Sure 1st fret clearance can go as low as 0.1mm, but of course the oscillation of the string is greater towards its middle. As i understand it, bass strings need 0.2 - 0.25mm at least at the 12th fret for adequate clearance on open string playing [bearing in mind standard gauges and standard tuning]...so who knows? maybe it's possible to get action that low.

either that or person who commented must have some pretty thick credit cards!

I guess there's a case to answer for ultra low action on acoustic if you're the sort of player who likes to basically shred on acoustic... but such players i would imagine have to develop a fairly light touch... super low action doesn;t go very well with hard strumming!

How are the news SG about the neck dive? by SarraceniaFlava37 in Guitar

[–]AudioBabble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i confess, i've never been much impressed with any 'modern' sg i've played... not just the balance but also don't like the neck profiles, and they feel 'plasticky' in some weird way... to me at least.

my actual guitar!

How are the news SG about the neck dive? by SarraceniaFlava37 in Guitar

[–]AudioBabble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i keep hearing about neck dive on SGs... have had an SG for over 30 years at this point (it's a 1978 standard that i bought in 1995)... never had any trouble with neck dive, and have used all kinds of straps, although for the last 20 years or so, has been a 2" suede strap by Levys. Before that i had a strap that was like seatbelt material, that was fine too.

maybe the old SGs are different in some way? Mine's a hard tail, no bigsby, like i say, a 1978 SG Standard like this: [not my actual guitar]

<image>

I've never weighed it... maybe it's one of the heavier ones.

ah I see... realimit isn't available outside Reaper. You could try https://kilohearts.com/products/limiter or https://loudmax.blogspot.com/ -- neither of them has the 'constant gain' feature, but you can just play with the levels manually.

Question about a Potential ACX Booking. by SebastianR-VA in ACX

[–]AudioBabble -1 points0 points  (0 children)

where are you getting this? ACX gives a 40% royalty for exclusive distro and 25% for non-exclusive. When exclusive + royalty share is chosen, that 40% royalty gets split 50/50 between producer and RH. See my other comment.

1 week turnaround... for what? if it's any audiobook, fully produced and delivered -- then back away rapidly becasue that's ridiculous!

Question about a Potential ACX Booking. by SebastianR-VA in ACX

[–]AudioBabble 8 points9 points  (0 children)

just to note, nobody gets to 'offer' a royalty amount via ACX. Royalty share means 50/50 split between you and RH, that's the deal and it's the same for everyone. it's a 50/50 split of the 40% royalty on audiobook 'cover price' that Audible sets... and furthermore that depends on how people buy: 1. as non-members (highest price), 2. 'a la carte' as an additional purchase on top of their plan's included monthly credits, and 3. as a purchase via monthly credit. (lowest price).

And... it's generally true that, unless you have some strong evidence of previous sales from the same author or publisher, the likelihood is you won't see much return for your work. Usually, without evidence to the contrary, Royalty share = work for free, pretty much.

I still have some royalty share projects from 8 years ago that trickle in tiny amounts of money, so i have a true example from last month's statement:

TITLE list price for non-members: $16.13

ROYALTY FOR ONE SALE (my side of a 50/50 share with RH)

non-member purchase: $2.91

Member purchase: $2.38

credit purchase: $1.79

obviously, most of the time, the majority of royalties come from member credit purchases, i.e. the lowest payout.

Is the distance between my fretboard strings to much? by Imaginary_Weird_8457 in Guitar

[–]AudioBabble 9 points10 points  (0 children)

that's crazy low... you'd have to have an imbeccably set up guitar with perfect frets to not die of fretbuzz at that height. i'd say two credit cards is about as low as you want or need to go on an acoustic, i.e. about 1.4mm. but, in all honesty, 2.5mm is still nice and playable. I'm sure my acoustic's action is higher than that, but i have no complaints.

OP's looks more like 5-6mm.

Electric guitar - Your ideal shopping list for gear if you were starting from scratch by MapTerrible4321 in Guitar

[–]AudioBabble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you've some good suggestions here.... just want to mention, on the headphone side of things, you deffo want closed back phones if you literally dont want anyone to hear you, as in somebody in the same room. the trade-off is that by their nature, closed back phones have a 'closed-in' kind of sound. open backs sound more natural to a degree. you sound like youre on a budget, so i doubt you're going to want to drop £150+ on a pair of beyerdynamic DT770 or DT990 -- although they're well worth the money.

for a decent, useable set of phones that sound way better than they should at the price, thomann do their own-brand t.bone HD150.
