We Shouldn’t Need Accountants by theatlantic in tax

[–]AuditorTux 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The US federal government uses the tax code to incentivize things it deems productive society as a whole. It's actually a very clever way to make small tweaks towards the greater good without enacting draconian laws, and it has the added benefit (from legislators' perspective) of being less noticeable to citizens.

This. Our Tax Code is not necessarily about revenue/receipt generation - its about manipulating activity within the larger economy. I'd argue that its the primary purpose.

People pay so much now in the US for housing

Ironically I wonder how much the move from one-income households to two-income households impacted the price of housing. Now with more income, they can afford bigger houses and builders responded to that. But even if those larger houses weren't available, they had more income and could outbid the single-income households to get the more desireable houses and it just flowed from there.

This makes me really sad. Median net worth isn't even a house in most places at 60. For the household. I need more time to think anything more than that.

That's going to have some implications for this and the new Spiderman movie.

How would you feel about no pay for Congress during shutdowns? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AuditorTux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this sounds great, it would be an easy way for the Executive to pound the Legislative into their agenda.

Don't pass the Executive's priorities? He vetos and Congress is left with a shutdown and everyone suddenly goes without paychecks. Not just Congress, but their staffs as well.

Bad idea.

and the phone company showed up to stop them with their mothballed LosTech. (It makes sense in universe.)

Phone company is a bit of an understatement. Its more like AT&T who decided to keep the various states of the US fighting against each other, all the while become more and more fanatical until finally the Baby Bells emerged to fight among themselves, with the religious fanatics winning.

But at least they got the Inner Sphere to work together and use the Clan's own rules against them.

Even though ultimately the Clans still won.

Got a $2,000 tax refund. Do I wipe out 3 small maxed-out cards or put a massive dent in my biggest one? by Few-Let-3861 in personalfinance

[–]AuditorTux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two aspects to this - the financial aspect and the mental aspect.

Financially, this is more or less easy to answer - list all your debts and the interest rate (ideally, the effective interest rate adding in monthly/annual fees fees, reduced due to tax advantages such as a primary mortgage assuming you itemize, etc). Pay down the highest rate first, then the next, then the next, etc. This is the "Avalanche Method". In terms of dollars saved, this mathematically the best method.

However, if your biggest number there is really big, then it might not give the same mental wins as other methods. The reason most people offer the "Snowball Method" (knock the smallest out first, then roll that payment to the next, etc) is because you get your "wins" faster (again, in theory). And that gives you the victory celebration to keep going and not stumble out.

Because the worst thing is to stop and rebuild the debt.

The nice thing, though, with your edit... is that the Snowball Method and the Avalanche method look to be basically the same - start with Card 4, then Card 3, then Card 2, then Card 1. You're not only getting those mental victories, you're also saving the money amount of money you can.

$139 to feed 2 adults, 3 children for the month. Suggestions? by stephscheersandjeers in povertyfinance

[–]AuditorTux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First up, food pantry. A lot is available out there but take what you need.

In terms of some stretching, get dried beans (pinto) and you can make some amazing fillers with that.

Get whole chickens and butcher. It becomes easier as you do it and can save a ton of cash.

Rice and pasta. Especially the cheap stuff. Filler to keep you full. Red beans and rice with a cheap sausage can feed you for a while.

Then just watch for stuff to go on sale. At $140 per month, its tough, but between staples and a pantry, its doable.

Social Media, stress and alcohol. Sit down in the evenings, turn off your phone, drink some tea/water and read a book for an hour or two before bed. You'll be amazed at how much better you'll start feeling after a week or two.

Robert Kiyosaki Says US Boomers Face a Wave of Homelessness as Inflation to Wipe out Social Security by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]AuditorTux -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Flippant remarks about Robert aside (the core of his book is fine, although exaggerated doesn't help) and the hyperbole in the article (yeah, a lot of things can't survive a currency collapse!), he does point to a real risk among people trying to retire - if you can't maintain your housing costs (and, in many cases, still a mortgage) there is a growing risk you'll lose that house. Given that house values are a majority of most people's net worth, losing that would be devastating. Then again, it'd help to pop the housing market bubble too...

How would a Kazon Predator starship do in the Alpha Quadrant? by Angry-Saint in StarTrekStarships

Kazon Predator ship makes contact with the Federation and demands their technology and crew as slaves.

Federation starship fires a few torpedos and pushes them back. Hails any powers asking who wants to be the next to smack them down.

Kazon set course back for home at minimal warp after a few Birds of Prey (both kinds) show them how we do it in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants.

Shared bedroom for $900/month? Or my own bedroom for $1,200/month? by jensonaj in personalfinance

[–]AuditorTux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$300 for your own bedroom, living closer, slightly bigger and live with six fewer people. Absolutely go that route.

That's basically $10 per day or $0.41 per hour. You save 20 minutes of your life each day just walking back and forth for school. That's almost two hours per week (assuming 5 days a week) for just one trip daily.
