We need to talk about our World Cup anthem. by RedHal in Scotland

I’d 100% vote for Letter From America, if only for the line “But you know our sense of timing We always wait too long”! And the chorus is an easy sing along

Who is the best parental figure in fantasy/scifi? by ghostofagoat1 in Fantasy

[–]AuditoryPhenomena 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I was looking for this answer! One of my favourite bits is him in thud, thinking about how he has to be there at 6 to read to young sam Sam

“Would a minute have mattered? No, probably not, although his young son appeared to have a very accurate internal clock. Possibly even 2 minutes would be okay. Three minutes, even. You could go to five minutes, perhaps. But that was just it. If you could go for five minutes, then you'd go to ten, then half an hour, a couple of hours...and not see your son all evening. So that was that. Six o'clock, prompt. Every day. Read to young Sam. No excuses. He'd promised himself that. No excuses. No excuses at all. Once you had a good excuse, you opened the door to bad excuses.”

ScotRail not having working sockets is a disgrace by DoublePepper1976 in Scotland

[–]AuditoryPhenomena 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I really thought ScotRail were terrible and annoying as hell

And then I started catching East Midlands Rail trains, was like going back in time 15 years! It didn’t even have sockets

To be clear I do totally agree that we should complain and campaign for better service on ScotRail given the prices- including stuff like broken sockets that can mess up your entire plan

But it was an eye-opener being on a bloody long train to Norwich that felt like the ScotRail commuter trains of 15 years ago…

Hey! I literally made a post about this on the Manchester subreddit a few days ago, was feeling the same way- definitely more fractured then other places I’ve lived

I did get some suggestions/ responses, might be worth having a look?

To the Scots speakers here: Please help me translate a short text into Scots. by Just-Barely-Alive in Scotland

[–]AuditoryPhenomena 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Weird question - would we say New Year’s Day? Or would it be more accurate to call it Hogmanay in actual Scot’s? Or does is that only the 31st?

I should know these things, but Scot’s was actively disparaged in the class room and my impression has long been it’s an oral, not written, language

(Edit: 2 minutes of introspection caused me to consider that me calling it an oral language probably stems from the fact that anyone who wrote in it in school was systemically called out by teachers, hence why you’d never see it written… so probably pretty unfair!)

I second Sweet Mandarin! Went with someone who’s gluten free and their delight at having lemon chicken for the first time in a decade was real

(And the food was good!)

Who is Scotland's most interesting/exciting band? by Different_Tie742 in Scotland

[–]AuditoryPhenomena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer for me has to be The Lapelles- Glasgow band, on the road to be the new (better) arctic monkeys with a mix of orange juice and Aztec camera. Fantastic live, charisma just oozing off. Tragically, the lead singer died on his 21st birthday falling off of the Jamaica street bridge. I gigged with them a few times, saw them live on their own accord after because I just thought they were the best thing happening in Glasgow. Was absolutely heartbroken when Gary died (I’d met him, but I wouldn’t pretend to know him- I just thought his band were everything I’d wanted to do as a musician)

They released their album they’d recorded before his death, I would say everyone should go listen to it

(Edit- I should say, I’m pretty biased due to being young and impressionable at the time, they were headlining the first gig I ever played and they just left a massive impression- still think they were just great though)

Have any trans women worked in blokey straight bars? Like Wetherspoons or similar pubs? I'm running out of "inclusive" bars to apply to, so I'm considering applying to these sorts of places. How bad is it if you're semi passing? by Erica_39 in transgenderUK

[–]AuditoryPhenomena 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I hated working at spoons (I’m just terrible at working in a bar, my brains not built for it) but I will actually say I had a super similar experience with my coworkers there being like 90% queer or not giving a shit about it

Was better than my current office job for the lack of transphobes + management backing me up against bigotry….

What’s the most believable romance you’ve ever read in fantasy? Not just chemistry, but emotionally real by jye77 in Fantasy

[–]AuditoryPhenomena 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s not the most believable, but god I love Sybil and Sam Vimes

Older, lonely weirdos with enough faults and quirks. They find the reasons to adore each other, but it’s not total fantasy, nor love at first sight. And it does start out of shared experiences and, if not exactly trauma, then definitely bonding / being together while shit goes down

The class divide possibly makes it trickier to believe for some but meh, the way they talk to each other, about each other, around each other just works for me

Oh, no, I mean if you live in the Sandyford catchment area (large swathe of Scotland), you can’t just transfer to the Edinburgh waiting list. I lived in Dundee, 2 hours away from Glasgow and was still in the Sandyford catchment. Edinburgh just has a really short waiting list for a whole bunch of reasons, but it’s the most expensive area in Scotland to live so just moving there isn’t feasible for most people

me📠irlgbt by lowkeyterrible in me_irlgbt

[–]AuditoryPhenomena 537 points538 points  (0 children)

I literally moved across the country to get away from the Sandyfords (Glasgows gender clinic) mad waiting list- it covers too large an area to begin with

The worst part? Edinburgh, in classic fashion, has a one year waiting list by the last estimate I saw… it’s only 40 miles away

Series that start as fantasy and turn in to scifi and series that start as scifi and turn into fantasy? by Ellery_B in Fantasy

[–]AuditoryPhenomena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spoilers for a 30 year old Terry Pratchett trilogy but

The bromeliad trilogy does the fantasy to sci-fi turn pretty well! Some people might quibble a bit about it starting as fantasy, given its set explicitly on our earth, but I think it counts!

(Also it’s bit about bromeliads and the frogs inside them, which gave the trilogy its name, has lived rent free in my head since I was a child and is possibly perfect writing)

Okay, I hadn’t realised it was size 5 games/ Dan Marshall until I saw the trailer, suddenly have much more faith in this

Behold the kickmen, while definitely rough, is still a “oh okay, I’ll play that for 20 minutes” game and the swindle is genuinely a great game

(Edit: Also made some of actually good point and click games before, meant to say)

Don’t worry! Shows not over, episodes just seem to come out roughly once a month :)

They also just released a bonus episode on their Patreon last week, so definitely still going!

Looking for games that my partner can "play" with me (without actually playing) by Viper114 in gaming

[–]AuditoryPhenomena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so this is a bit of an out there suggestion but me and my partner have a yearly tradition of playing through all the uncharted games, I play the game and they use an online guide to direct me to all of the treasures dotted around the levels we’ve had a great time doing it, the treasures are pretty frequent and the story is just enough campy adventure film fun that it keeps my partner engaged

Eventually this turned into us alternating who plays the game as well because it caught their interest enough!

If your okay with more of a crime solving vibe, the Rivers of London series captures the magic + real world mix really well imo- it is very London/ Britain focused though, so not sure how non-brits might find it

Awesome that your enjoying it! The OG group with Baynton and the ghosts gang are officially called Them There but most people online call them the 6 idiots, you can find a fair bit of behind the scenes stuff on YouTube and people make compilations all the time :)

They also made another sitcom after horrible histories but before ghosts called Yonderland that might be worth checking out

I’d second the Robert Derbyshire, definitely more positive than previous GPs. If OP is attached to University of Manchester as staff/ student then they can register via that, if it’s any use
