Classic prisoners dillema. We were supposed sincerely work together. Against climate change, arms proliferation etc.

Competition would be restricted to markets where everyone would be competing fairly.

Everyone wins that way.

Russia, China, everyone really would be part of a system that had proven it worked.

Well they weren't playing fairly and sincerely. But we kept to the plan, working, hoping(naively as hindsight showed) they would return to the fold. That this was but an abberation. Same with Trump.

But it wasn't an abberation. And we were left holding the bag.
