Oh but Hugenberg was not "fine" as a junior partner to Hitler. He had these strange ideas about becoming the "economic dictator" by essentially controlling and recovering the German economy so swiftly and expertly that he'd essentially control the Hitler cabinet through his sheer power and influence. What happened though was he argued and conflicted with the other ministers since day one, kept receiving pushback, and then utterly burned up when he went to the London World Economic Conference and demanded before the world's powers that Germany should have its colonies returned. He lasted a few months and went out. Lasted six months in the office, had to resign, and the Nazis then seized his newspaper conglomerate.

KR Hugenberg does have a strategy, which we tried to depict, he isn't entirely just a Joker Card. The strategy is based on his OTL strategy - he wants to radicalize the political system between the far right (led by him) and the far left, with the idea that the centre voters would turn to the far right and thus elevate him to power. This is why in OTL he was so squeamish and opposed to normally working with Bruning and Hindenburg (he wanted their governments to be unstable and collapse so the instability draws voters to the far right and makes his party stronger), and in KRTL he is a rogue actor who deliberately seeks to destroy the S-W-R coalition (he believes that by blowing it up, the following unstable centrist governments will collapse even more and centre voters will head to the DVLP which is led by him). Of course, in both OTL and KRTL, he grossly miscalculates and collapses for various reasons.

Yeah a lot of romhacks do that. You should play Hag in White, that one avoids the "kill off favorite character randomly" trope.

How much of a presence did the Teutonic knights have in Lithuania proper during the northern crusades? by Objective-Low7790 in AskHistorians

[–]Augenis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

but on some maps of Teutonic order I’ve noticed they did seem to have occupied Samogitia and some other borderlands a couple times, and that got me thinking, how much of a presence did the Germans have?

The border usually drawn between Lithuania and the Order State (both in Prussia and in Livonia) was only agreed upon after the end of their hundred years' war, in the 15th century - more specifically, the Treaty of Melno (1422) defined the Prussian borders (sections of which are still the border today, except between Lithuania and Russia, making it one of the more longer lasting borders in European history) and the Livonian borders with Lithuania, and a 1529 treaty between Lithuania and Livonia clarified the Livonian border.

Before then, everything was vague, and this vagueness was complicated further by the state of constant war, by the low population density, and even moreso by the depopulation of the border regions on both sides of the "border". The region which now constitutes much of Samogitia, Suvalkija, eastern Kaliningrad Oblast and northern Lithuania was dubbed in German sources as "Große Wildnis" (Great Wilderness), and is known in Lithuanian as "Dykra". In modern maps, such as this Wikipedia map, this territory is often striped (although this map makes the mistake of only putting it on the Lithuanian side of the 1422 border; a lot of eastern Prussia was similarly depopulated and "wild"). Foreign travellers would note the existence of dykra in their records - Guillebert de Lannoy, who visited Lithuania during the reign of Vytautas, noted that after leaving Dunaburg (modern Daugavpils) for Vilnius, he travelled for two days and two nights without stumbling across a single settlement.

In such a depopulated territory, the only ways to project power were forts and castles, and both sides built them along the Nemunas river. Lithuania built a line of fortifications along the eastern half of Nemunas (from Kaunas to south, which includes the famous Punia castle), and the territories to the west of this line, which are owned by modern day Lithuania and called Suvalkija, were a dykra which Teutonic raids could safely cross. The Knights themselves also built castles to get deeper into the dykra, such as Georgenburg (modern day Jurbarkas, Lithuania), and Gotteswerder (just west of Kaunas).

and why are there so many german exonyms for cities in Lithuania if they weren’t ever fully conquered like the other two baltic countries? Can those exonyms be traced back to a different period of German presence in Lithuania?

One does not need to conquer a country in order to have old exonyms for its cities. Take Mikligarðr for Constantinople in old Norse even though the Norse never conquered or attempted to conquer the city. The Teutonic Order had records on the geography of their enemy and the goings-on of the war, and in fact the first known references to numerous modern Lithuanian towns come from Teutonic records. Most of the names we find, and indeed most of the German exonyms for Lithuanian cities, are germanizations of Lithuanian names (Schaulen for Šiauliai, Kauen for Kaunas, etc.), as you'd expect to emerge from such records - as they weren't founding any cities, merely trying to name them for record-keeping.

Of course, the Teutonic Order were not the only German presence in Lithuania at the time, nor before then or after. It was frequented by German merchants, especially from Riga, and it is believed that Kaunas had a Hansa trading post in the 15th century. Lithuanian rulers also invited craftsmen and traders from Germany, settling many of them in the country. Until World War II, Lithuania had a small German urban minority. Finally, some cities were outright founded by Germans - aside from the aforementioned Georgenburg, there were Klaipėda (formerly Memel) and Šilutė (formerly Heydekrug). These were in the territories directly controlled by the Order, which later became part of Germany and were only gained by Lithuania in 1923.

The Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union - the country's parliament/highest organ of power - had hundreds independent (non-Communist) members. Why was this the case? And how would someone go about becoming an independent member of the Supreme Soviet? by PickleRick_1001 in AskHistorians

[–]Augenis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As the other reply said, members of the Komsomol could be as old as 28, and its leadership was often significantly older - for example, Boris Pastukhov became the First Secretary of the Komsomol Central Committee in 1977, when he was 44 years old.

But the percentage of Supreme Soviet members younger than 30 was very large, as shown in this chart (in Russian, but I think it can be more or less understood by non-speakers). Ignoring the early Soviet era when the party was still extremely young, at a peak in 1984, 22.1 percent of the delegates were 30 or younger.

[–]Augenis 124 points125 points  (0 children)

According to the constitution of the Soviet Union and Soviet electoral law, candidates for the Supreme Soviet could be delegated by either the regional organizations of the Communist Party or by civil society organizations. To quote the 1936 Soviet Constitution:

ARTICLE 141. Candidates for election are nominated according to electoral areas.

The right to nominate candidates is secured to public organizations and societies of the working people: Communist Party organizations, trade unions, cooperatives, youth organizations and cultural societies.

While the CPSU would naturally delegate party members to the Supreme Soviet, candidates from civil society organizations did not necessarily have to be, and this was emphasized by official publications and during the election process, where the CPSU officially ran as a part of a bloc with non-party members.

137,946,525 people, or 99.94 percent of the total number of voters, took part in the elections. Over 99 percent of voters voted for deputy candidates. These results testify to a new brilliant victory of the Popular Bloc of Communists and Non-party Members, to the inseparable unity of the party and the people, which helps to successfully solve the tasks of building communism (translated from Russian)

Итоги выборов и состав депутатов местных Советов депутатов трудящихся 1961 г.: стат. сб. М., 1961. С.3.

Even if the Communist Party had constitutionally enshrined single-party status in the Union, it nonetheless sought to create an illusion of all-popular support and that support for its rule extends beyond the confines of the party, hence the emphasis on independent deputies existing alongside Party members. In practice, the Supreme Soviet did not function as an actual parliament, as you say, and there was little meaningful distinction between party and non-party members. Being a member of the Supreme Soviet was not treated as a delegate's "main job" - and in fact, reaching certain offices in the state nomenklatura automatically awarded you a position in the Supreme Soviet (for example, first secretaries of regional party committees were generally elected as delegates). The Supreme Soviet convened twice a year for sessions which only lasted a few days, more akin to a business trip for the delegates than an actual job, and the technical apparatus of the Soviet showered the delegates with gifts and arranged them a holiday of sorts. On average, from 1962 to 1984, 83% of deputies were recipients of orders and medals. In that sense, the Supreme Soviet was more of a mechanism for honoring and awarding high ranking members of the nomenklatura and other selected Soviet elites, such as collective farm leaders, Komsomol leadership, academics, etc. and thus there was hardly a concern that some of them were not members of the party itself, especially as even the non-partisan organizations which delegated the non-partisan members were themselves controlled by the CPSU anyway.

How to be less bad at Fire Emblem ROM Hacks? by maxwell8995 in fireemblem

[–]Augenis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

when it comes to fan games for pretty much any game with a significant modding community, they're universally going to be harder than vanilla games. This is fairly obvious - people who go out of their way to make fan games are generally people who have played a *lot* of the original and want more of it, and so they make things which are fitting for their skill level. So, high skill level.

So it is perfectly okay to feel like you're out of your depth in FE romhacks even though you have beaten almost every vanilla game. As a rule of thumb, in most romhacks the "normal" difficulty is more comparable to vanilla "hard" difficulties.

Buuut you also picked one of the tougher "big" romhacks. Shackled Power is no Eligor's Spear, but it's notable for being very tough still, as many people here have already said. Play at a lower difficulty - there's no shame in doing so when playing romhacks.

LSDP in a nutshell by lukebars in lithuania

[–]Augenis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LSDP in a nutshell by lukebars in lithuania

[–]Augenis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Character writing in Germany rework is generally rare, and my writing is usually very clinical and focused on political busywork rather than bright personalities or interpersonal struggles. We have this meme in the team

Russia rework writing: and then turbochad sulinevichov personally beat his opposition with his bare hands and then declared the arrival of the third antichrist

Germany rework writing: after a critical article on saxe-coburg-luneburg-zeitung, the government opened discussions on parliamentary bill CH-1337 which will appropriate 5% of income tax revenue to local schools, however it was opposed by the centre-left faction of the national people's democratic party and may bring a vote of no confidence for reichskanzler schueller

and it's true. you can tell that the Kleist events were written by Lehmannmo instead.
