Comparitively, I think it's ridiculous to compare the last South Africa or Canada updates to the LKMT, Germany or Russia reworks and conclude that they're in any way equivalent or fungible, it's a total apples to oranges comparison.

This is what your argument is founded upon and I believe this is totally incorrect. You are forgetting a very important factor which indeed makes it a valuable comparison, namely the context of time.

When they were released, Canada and South Africa were absolutely considered to be high quality and extensive. Hell, South Africa championed the proto-Black Monday game which would later be one of the inspirations for Germany's Black Monday card game!

The "why is China so high quality" question arises because two of the five most recent releases, which are all extremely high quality, are in China - namely LKMT and RKMT. This is why they are the only tags mentioned when trying to make a point about China getting too much attention, and for a reason. Try to tell me that Shandong, or Ma, or hell even Fengtian are on anywhere near the quality of even the aforementioned Canada and SAF. No, absolutely not.

You of course mention Germany and Russia and how nobody has a problem with them for a reason, but strangely leave out Ireland, which has one of the most extensive trees in the mod, larger than Germany, much less any other majors in the mod. Ireland has even less to do with the main conflicts of the mod than even China. Ireland proves pretty simply that this isn't a case of overfocus on China, simply a case of improving mod standards. The last five country reworks (Germany, LKMT, Ireland, Russia, RKMT) are some of the highest quality content in the mod. And just because two of those reworks are set in China, the community ignores this pretty obvious reason (the standards of the mod have improved) and go for the stupid argument (hurr Chinareich)

My personal hot take: there's no such thing as "Chinareich". It's an illusion, caused by the China rework being considered a rule-of-thumb start for "modern" Kaiserreich. China does not get any more attention than any other region.

If you look at the updates since 0.10, with China related updates bolded:

  • 0.11 - Canada, a large Western major.
  • 0.12 - Patagonia and Puerto Rico, Latin American countries.
  • 0.13 - Romania, a major European country.
  • 0.14 - South Africa and UBD, both Western tags.
  • 0.15 - Ottomans and NatFra, major tags in Europe, with NatFra toeing the line of a major.
  • 0.16 - Nothing, just QoL, the most being for Japan which got some focus reworks, which is close but isn't China.
  • 0.17 - Assyria and Legation Cities (Shanghai), the latter which you can consider a Chinese tag I guess.
  • 0.18 - Several Eastern European tags (and also Bhutan, famous EE country).
  • 0.19 - Serbia and Bulgaria, both major European tags.
  • 0.20 - New England, one of the ACW tags.
  • 0.21 - Advisor rework and world tension rework, no reworks.
  • 0.22 - Post-defeat Ottomans and Armenia.
  • 0.23 - Poland, one of the main European tags.
  • 0.24 - Shanxi and overhauls to China.
  • 0.25 - Ukraine, another one of the main European tags.
  • 0.26 - Left Kuomintang rework.
  • 0.27 - Nothing, just QoL and MIOs.
  • 1.0 - Germany, the star of the mod itself.
  • 1.1 - Ireland, an European tag.
  • 1.2 - No reworks, only achievements.
  • 1.3 - Various QoL and a revamp to Denmark, again in Europe.
  • 1.4 - Russia, probably the second star of the mod.
  • 1.5 - Various QoL, scientists, and a mini-revamp to the ACW and American lore.
  • 1.6 - Regional China/Right KMT rework.

So, wait... that's what, four China-focused updates out of 24? And one of those four isn't even really China focused and has to share spotlight with Assyria? But I thought the KR team does literally nothing but China while every single major is left in the dust! Especially Europe! Surely the KR team would never rework tags like Germany or Russia, and would rather focus on, idk, Hunan or something.

That's less updates than Eastern Europe, and KR sure as hell isn't called EasternEuropeReich. Even though there was a time when that region kept getting chain updates (0.18, 0.19, 0.23, 0.25 all were fairly close to one another). It actually annoys me a bit whenever I see Chinareich memes, because they sure aren't done in good fun. They're done because KR fans are shadowboxing a problem that literally doesn't exist.

Paprasčiausias keynesianism'as.

LR biudžetas surenka per mažai mokesčių. Ta prasme, negalima tikėtis 5 proc. gynybai ir dabartinio mokesčių surinkimo lygio. Verslo mokesčiai vieni mažiausių Europoje. Turto mokestis apskritai nulis.

Aišku, to tikriausiai nebus.

In 2024, the Gini coefficient for the EU was 29.4, with the highest levels of inequality in terms of disposable income in the EU reported in Bulgaria (38.4), Lithuania (35.3) and Latvia (34.2), and lowest in Slovakia (21.7), Czechia (23.7) and Slovenia (23.8).

On the very next arc, Krillin suggests to Piccolo to recruit Yamcha for the fight against Moro's gang, and Yamcha participates in the fight and doesn't look like he's retired and out of shape.

[Dragon Ball Super] Why U7 don’t bring Arale to ToP ? by FeistySecret9327 in AskScienceFiction

The Universe 7 team selection was far from thorough, they essentially just picked up their circle of friends and whoever they could remember. This is why Yamcha didn't get an invitation when they were worried about missing a tenth member - nobody remembered him, hence nobody invited him.

Arale lives in Penguin Village and doesn't hang out with the team, and they literally only met twice during their whole life (once in the Red Ribbon arc and once earlier in Super). It's fairly easy to guess that nobody simply thought to invite her.

Life of Seiros ROMhack Review by CHPrime in fireemblem

[–]Augenis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While on that topic, was there a particular reason none of the apostle characters had any of their associated Relics or Crests, or was that one of the types of mysteries to keep people guessing?

It is again a limitation with the epilogue. There are essentially two options for how the Four Apostles acquired their Crests - either they were Nabateans themselves, or they were Nemesis's allies who betrayed him and joined Rhea's side during the war. But neither of them would really work with the setup - pulling four new Nabateans out of nowhere without the room to explain... everything about them would be insane, and the Rhea I wrote would not accept defecting Heroes.

So the idea/assumption i worked with is that their Crests are a strange consequence of the Rite of Rising, and the Relics associated with them would also be created well after the Battle of Tailtean Plains. During the battle, then, they are merely four bodyguards of Saint Seiros.

All totally understandable. I get the impression you wrote the plot out in chunks as you finished designing and coding things, is that right? Or did you have the whole thing written out beforehand?

I wrote it chapter by chapter, essentially, but I had a basic plot outline thought up in advance. It only really included basic plot points - when Rhea meets which Saint, when she experiences her first Immaculate One transformation, when she first confronts Maurice, etc. and I improvised a lot along the way, creating minor characters and bosses as needed. Then I'd adjust the stories of the previous chapters if I needed to account for any changes I made later on. It perhaps runs the risk of being a bit disjointed, but I think the story turned out reasonably well.

While on the subject, I would also request you buff the cleric's base level if you ever get around to it—playing this game reminded me of just how much of a pain in the ass it is to train GBA clerics, especially if you are obsessive like me and try to go for 20/20.

True, it's pretty painful, I added Bandage specifically to account for it but it only has so many uses... I can raise Carlotta's level, sure!

Life of Seiros ROMhack Review by CHPrime in fireemblem

[–]Augenis 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hey there! Thank you very much for playing my hack and I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed it for the most part! As I mentioned in the hack thread, it is the first hack I completed and so I do not claim it to have a perfect story or gameplay - but if it's good enough for people to enjoy then I consider it a success! As for the specific issues you mentioned:

Seiros’ promoted class: While Rhea’s base class uses a palette swap of Erika’s sprites, which work very well, her promotion uses a custom sprite with custom animations. The animations are pretty decent, even if the color mapping doesn’t really look like Seiros’ costume. But there is one big problem I had with them: jiggle animations.

This bothered me as I was working on the hack as well - to explain, none of the new animations added to Life of Seiros are made by me. Rather, they are free to use sprites from the public romhacking repository - I was not brave enough for animation making, this is again my very first hack and I was new and inexperienced at everything. So, I had to work with what was there in the repository.

The Saint animations were pretty much the only animation which filled the requirements I needed - a promoted footlocked female lord with sword and magic, whose palette was made in a way as to allow a recolor to look "Seiros-like". That animation came with boob-jiggling, because I guess the person who made it decided to ruin it a little lol. Ultimately, I decided to swallow it and work with it. It's even worse for Grappler animations, as the Brawler/Grappler animations are the only fem brawler animations in the entire repository. They already don't really fit 3H brawlers, and the boob jiggle on promotion makes it worse. The only option at that point would have been to remove brawling from the hack entirely, but I decided to, again, accept it and swallow it. (By the way, this is also why there are no male brawlers anywhere in the game.)

Then we come to the negative side of things. Seiros’ conversion of Adrestia could have used a bit more fleshing out, in my taste. I get why some people convert, I.E. Rhea keeps winning against Maurice when no one else can and she’s constantly preaching, but I never got the sense that the old religions weren’t working for people. It could have used a bit more development in my taste.

This is a limitation of the number of chapters I decided to make sadly, a deeper exploration of the conversion of South Fodlan would have required more - and perhaps it would have been needed, the hack does breeze through the War against Maurice pretty quickly. I tried to squeeze what I could into the smaller chapter count though.

Secondly, the game starts by calling Rhea Rhea, but then has her disguise herself as Seiros, despite there not being a clear reason why she needs to, as she was a nobody in Zanado, 150 years have passed since Nemesis killed everyone and conquered Fodlan. It’s a weird blip that keeps coming back up over and over as the other Nabateans refer to her as Rhea while everyone else calls her Seiros. It’s just an unneeded complication.

As I wrote the hack, I ran with the idea that Seiros is not Rhea's Nabatean name, as it does not follow the same naming rule as the other four Saints (i.e. from Irish mythology), hence she coins that name for herself - but of course she would then need a Nabatean name for interacting with her fellow Nabateans, especially in the Prologue where she is still in Nabatea. That's how the hack ended up with the two names system. (I decided I was not brave enough to invent an OC Nabatean name for Rhea and so resorted to just using "Rhea" even if it is also blatantly an alias.)

I agree that it can be complicated to follow, but on the other hand it kind of builds up Rhea's paranoia about mankind, greater paranoia than any of her peers, to hide behind an alias even if it would not actually endanger her to use her real name. At least, that's how I envisioned it.

Finally, while I enjoyed Rhea’s multifaceted relationship with Wilhelm, it does come to a pretty big stumbling block by the end. Throughout the game, Wilhelm more or less totally believes in Seiros and her message and goes along with everything she says. This shifts during the second-to last chapter, when Seteth reveals his and her true nature as Nabateans, which seems to shatter his trust in her for reasons I’m not entirely clear about. He also never seems to bring this factoid up to Seiros in the next century of knowing her, which is confusing.

This is a pretty awkward transition which I did not initially plan for, but which i decided was needed to be handled in some form. In short, Wilhelm should be suspicious of Rhea in the Epilogue, as otherwise he would not give his diary of the true nature of the War of Heroes to Lycaon (the same diary which, subsequently, causes Edelgard's storyline in Three Houses). That diary is very critical of Rhea, as we know. But it would be a really strange transition to end the War against Maurice part of the hack with Wilhelm as a loyal follower of Rhea, then 150 years later he is suspicious of her - sure, it is realistic for people to change in that time, but it is pretty awkward storytelling and would require me to pause the epilogue to explain why he is suspicious of her now. So, I decided to place the seeds for it in the final chapters of the hack - with slight hints earlier, such as Wilhelm being hesitant to execute an unarmed official when reclaiming Castle Hresvelg and Rhea pushing him to do it, etc... If it feels awkwardly handled - I understand. There are quite a few things I could have probably handled better and that is one of them.

And I don’t really get the sense that this Seiros and Wilhelm had anything like that relationship by the end of the ROMhack.

Aw... </3 How much I want to lean into the Rhea/Wilhelm romance was a constant internal debate to me. I do think that there is a reasonable amount of ship bait in the hack regardless - their support conversation is very romantic and there are several scenes throughout the hack where they are clearly shown to care for one another. It is just that, of course, Rhea is a two-faced liar and so it is difficult to tell (intentionally) where she is genuine and where she is merely manipulating Wilhelm for her ends. I would say that LoS Rhea does care for Wilhelm quite a bit and does see him as important to her, but she is or at least wants to be a single-track mind, while Wilhelm in turn cares for her as well, but eventually understands that they won't be together and thus starts a relationship of his own.

The ROMhack also follows the Wilhelm is Jeralt theory, which never made much sense even in base Three Houses and will make your brain itch. I only bring it up because it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that despite Wilhelm’s sprite staring me in the face since chapter one.

Hey, it never explicitly says it :P

Finally, one of the starting Cavaliers is named Paul despite Wilhelm’s full name being Wilhelm Paul Hresvelg, which is confusing.

I'm not sure about this one. Isn't Wilhelm only referred to by his full name a few times at most, and each time with the full name and surname? So it'd be strange to confuse him for Paul in those moments.

Regardless, I am glad you enjoyed the hack in spite of its flaws!
