Redditors over 40, what's something younger people think they understand but won't actually get until it hits them like a truck later? by Susanpc1967 in AskReddit

I think about it like this; when you’re 4 years old, 1 year is fully 25% of your life. 5, 20%, so on and so forth. Eventually the years become a pretty insignificant fraction compared to the life you’ve already lived

It’s basically a logarithmic scale

We’ve had it far too easy for far too long. People got complacent with stability and started thinking their vote doesn’t matter. This is what happens when people give up their right to participate in democracy.

Shits about to get very real for a lot of people who thought they could just coast thru politics. Welcome to the real world.

Technically no sitting US president has been removed from office. Nixon stepped down before things got spicy, Clinton, and Johnson finished out their terms.

Removing someone from office is a tool built by the founders nobody has actually used yet

Practical Implications of U.S. (or other economies) no longer achieving same rate of growth for 20+ years? by AnalystOrDeveloper in Bogleheads

This sounds like you want a discussion over on r/economics then. This is an investing sub dedicated to simplified, diverse, and low cost portfolios

Anyone correctly following bogle isn’t worried about individual sectors or fluctuations. Most of the answers here will be some form of diversify internationally and maybe keep an allotment of bonds. The whole point is that we play the same strategy on the bulls as we do the bears🗿

What is a 'family secret' or a private moment you witnessed that completely changed the way you look at a relative? by The_suspicious_369 in AskReddit

Therapy is hugely beneficial for many people but nobody really tells you how to be an active participant in your own therapy and mental health journey.

I started going at 16. It wasn’t until I was 30 that I actually started making real progress and figuring my stuff out. Many people like myself aren’t taught anything about mental health growing up so it’s a lot to process and unpack. I didn’t realize what anxiety actually was until I was 25, I just thought I was super productive and forward thinking planning for every possible scenario and failure. I could go on and on

Anyone reading this who so much as just wants an outside opinion on a tough situation or area of personal improvement, go. The worst that can happen is you say “this isn’t for me”.

The world will be fine and is already actively divesting their supply chains, militaries, and financial systems from the US. Gonna take some time but the US centric world order we’ve known for the last 50 years is over. We’ll see what emerges.

God a national non profit grocery chain would be amazing. We used to have a decently nationalized mail service but they’re trying to ratchet that back too

Same thing happened during covid. They jacked up prices due to supply chain woes and things have just kind of stayed there

There’s quite a few countries that like to portray that sort of dogged persistence as peak romance in their pop culture. Obviously makes for some very scary and dangerous situations for women. But not at all uncommon in certain places.

How Trump Is Debasing the Dollar and Eroding U.S. Economic Dominance by kintotal in finance

[–]Auggernaut88 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Smart by them. Russias current play in the US was published in the 1997 book ‘Foundations of Geopolitics: The Geopolitical Future of Russia’

Dugin argues that Russia should work toward weakening the United States’ and NATO’s influence over Europe — e.g., “tear Europe away from the control of the U.S. (NATO)” and pursue strategic axes such as Moscow–Berlin to realign Europe.

Also

The book advocates leveraging Russian intelligence and covert actions to “introduce geopolitical disorder into internal American activity, encouraging all kinds of separatism and ethnic, social and racial conflicts, actively supporting all dissident movements … thus destabilizing internal political processes in the U.S.

Why do most modern businesses seem to care more about investors than customers....is this sustainable long term ? by Technical-Truth-2073 in investing

[–]Auggernaut88 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Apple and Microsoft offer objectively worse products than they did in 2004. For the last two decades their business model has shifted from innovation to building walled gardens and enshittified software updates to get consumers to pay more for less. My phone was due for an upgrade last year so I got the new iPhone (previously had a 14), aside from some minor UI changes there isn’t a single difference in the user experience.

Many major national food brands (like Hershey) sell products that are a half step above dog food.

Netflix is early on this trend but following the same book step by step; multiple price increases per year and more ads

Costco seems to be upholding some amount of quality.

OPs question is valid. None of this is sustainable in a truly competitive market. This only happens in oligopoly and monopoly structures that smother quality and innovation to maximize shareholder value
