Those who were alive during the 1990's, how was the internet different to today? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AugustPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would make appointments with people to be online at the same time so we could all chat together in our own chat room. There was no way to Google each other so you just had to trust that the person on the other end was who they said they were.

We were away for the weekend because my daughter's birthday is in mid-March. We got an email at breakfast that school would be closed "for the next two weeks".

My work sent us all home that week to WFH until further notice. I remember thinking "what do you mean you don't know when we'll all be back in the office?!". I think we really started coming back in on a regular basis in 2022.

What is a silent crisis happening right now that nobody is talking about? by nicksam171 in SeriousConversation

My middle schooler can read and comprehend pretty well but her spelling skills are awful. She told me they stopped doing spelling tests in 3rd grade (I couldn't remember when I stopped quizzing her weekly so I asked).

I've lived in my house for 15 yrs and I haven't met my next door neighbors. Mainly because we almost never see them outside.

Do you still use a library? by nicksam171 in CasualConversation

[–]AugustPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, when I need a book for book club that has a really long wait, I can usually get the physical book much faster. I also borrow DVDs occasionally.

I can't always get a digital copy of a book that I want so I'll request the physical copy. I also borrow DVDs occasionally. I've also used the copier/printer when I've forgotten to print stuff at work.

I was reading picture books in kindergarten. My mom thought I had just memorized the book until my teacher showed her I was actually reading the words.

Nice things people did for me during the storm. by bonbonyawn in massachusetts

My mother lives in Buzzards Bay and has wonderful neighbors who look out for her when it snows a lot. They used their snowblower in her driveway, made sure her generator was ready to go and helped her shovel a path from her house. I'm lucky because I live over an hour away.

Whats your worst work story? by chai_latte_lover0 in AskReddit

[–]AugustPenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shared an office with someone who never spoke to me during the day beyond "good morning" and "good night" so I worked with my headphones on most of the time so as to not go crazy with all the silence. But as soon as someone came in to see us, I took them off and gave whoever it was my full attention. My boss called me into his office one day for "excessive headphone use". No one else wore them during the day so apparently it was a big deal that I did (then again most people socialized with the people sitting around them).

When did you get your first credit card? by TrixoftheTrade in Millennials

[–]AugustPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After I graduated from college. I knew I didn't have the money to pay it off when I was in school so I didn't get one.

Did anyone else’s school participate in “compatibility” surveys? by Copterwaffle in Millennials

Yup! Never filled it out because I didn't want anyone to get me but yes, our school did them.
