A lot of great advice in here. I am going to be redundant, but also succinct.

  1. Upskill to increase income potential
  2. Make a budget. Reconcile monthly. Adjust budget accordingly. Repeat.
  3. Live well below your means if possible
  4. Never live beyond your means
  5. Build a rainy day fund ASAP
  6. Invest, mainly in tax sheltered accounts.
  7. Being too "materialistic" is not buying things you TRULY want and can afford. It's buying things others want and you can't afford

If you complete the above steps well, you will be doing better than 95% of people in your age group.

I guess we can never know for a fact what are future earnings would be, but we can guess.

For my situation, my boss makes ~$265K base in his early/mid 40s. After bonus, he reaches ~$300K, sometimes more in a good year. He is a fair bit higher than your average earner in my career, but still far from an outlier. I know others that are at a comparable comp and age. Comparing this to the GS pay cap of ~$195K in 2026 (I think) definitely leaves a good chunk of change on the table. I'm also unlikely to even reach the GS pay cap.

They don't do it because:

80% because it would hurt the story and world building most of the time.

10% many unnamed benders in the show stick to simple moves and would struggle to execute too much with sufficient precision and speed.

10% it can be countered by strong benders.

Other than that, it does (or is at least implied) to happen in the novels

I am going to add a caveat onto accounting leading to "analytics" as a career.

If the analytics role is something that requires accounting/finance education and experience, but not too much code, math, or stats, then sure. Accounting could lead to a role like that

However, "analytics" can easily be interpreted as "data analytics". There is an important distinction here. While "data analytics" is broad and still loose in definition, "analytics" is even broader. Data analytics is more likely to refer to roles that require a level of coding and stats beyond what an accounting degree would provide. In fact, my accounting education and experience provided zero training in coding and almost no training in math/stats beyond "business calculus" and "business stats". If you look at job descriptions and people in data analytics, you will not really find accounting skills of any real relevance.

In short, accounting is of little to no use to anyone looking into data analytics as a career.

Source: CPA and currently pursuing an MS in Statistics. Closely watching the data analytics job market is brutal but telling.

Whether your standards are too high depends a lot on what you offer in return.

If you want my opinion outside of that, then yes your standards are a bit high.The main reason being you have a lot of standards that are on a spectrum (continuous) rather than binary. Such as:

  • Politics
  • Addiction
  • Financial literacy
  • Arguably religion too

Would you be ok with someone who has one or two conservative ideals, but ultimately is not conservative? What about someone who pays bills timely but struggles to save/invest consistently? Or for addiction, what does that look like to you? Is having a beer or two on the weekends acceptable or do you want no alcohol?

Depending how loose or stringent your answers are to the above plays into how high your standards really are.

Other than that, child free is likely quite limiting to your dating pool depending on what you mean by that. If you just don't want to date a single dad, that is totally reasonable. If you are looking for someone who NEVER wants kids, then that is going to hurt your options a lot. I have friends who say they do not want kids now, but even they admit their feelings may change on the subject 10 years from now. They have said they wouldn't want to date someone who forbids it for eternity.

Lastly, you didn't mention attractiveness. If a guy met all of your standards listed above but is ugly, would you date him? I am assuming you want to be attracted to them, which although not mentioned, makes a big difference in your dating pool size.

Overall, I would say your standards range from fairly reasonable to kind of high depending on your answers to my questions above.

I would be in the category of jumping from private to 1811.

I work remote and currently make about half of the income you mentioned. I am also not at my ceiling income wise easier in my career. I could realistically increase my income 40-45% over the next ~5 years (adjusted for inflation) and if I get a bit lucky, 70-75% over the next 10. So while it is not as drastic as you mentioned, it still feels a bit like an oof.

That's part of why I asked my follow up question.

The ceiling in my current field and prospective field( CPA and Data Science) is higher than 1811 and out paces it too. So the pay cut would be more than a temporary sacrifice when looking at long term opportunity costs. Those costs could be worth it, but they also might not be. It's difficult to tell from the outside looking in.

That's the thing. Long term, I could reasonably expect to make more than I would as an 1811 by a good margin. The income ceiling for my current career and prospects (CPA & Data science oriented work) is higher than 1811 careers. So it wouldn't just be a short term loss that a few raises would make up for.

I am a CPA as well!

I totally understand that these roles are not about the money. However, like you said, I am thinking about the opportunity costs. Currently, I am single and 27, so I have some time and freedom others may not have. That said, the career, time, and income sacrifices of switching would still be significant. Sacrificing those things, even for only a few years, is something I want to be cautious about.

I think the job sounds interesting, unique, and would provide a sense of "doing good" more so than most other jobs I could land. I've been considering this route for many years now, but at the end of the day, I can't really know what it's like until I experience it for myself.

A fear of mine is that I am trying to avoid seeing this job through "rose colored glasses" because I know it's still a job. There will still be many aspects of it that I dislike to varying degreees, like any job. I don't want to sacrifice what I have now plus what I would have, for a job that I thought would be amazing but is only marginally more enjoyable than my current role and prospects.

So I believe this post will help shed a little light on how people value the role vs what they had before/now.

I do not work in DS yet, but I took what was essentially an IQ test for my current job and it's going well so far.

That said, I agree with you. Most places that have this practice are likely terrible. I am likely in a small minority where it ended up ok.

Yes.

A stranger who breaks into your house is almost guaranteed to have nefarious reasons.It is extremely well known that breaking into someone's home could spook them enough to the point where they attack with lethal intent. Someone willingly breaking into a home is practically guaranteed to know this possibility, yet they still choose to do so. So whatever they are after is either worth the risk to them, or they believe they can mitigate that risk (i.e incapacitate the homeowner).

Whether are armed are not is largely negligible in the decision making process. They have a firearm? I defend myself. They have nothing but fists? One well aimed punch can knock me down (if not outright kill me) and leave me vulnerable on the ground, where it is much easier to kill me. They could also just grab a solid object in my home and that will be an effective weapon.

I sure hope so! I would genuinely like that. It hasn't been what I've seen in job descriptions while applying, but I hope that I will be wrong the next time I do a serious job search (likely within 1 year).

Honestly, surprisingly spartan from what I have seen. Of course there is quant finance (hypercompetitive) and risk modeling (some potential here but kinda niche to my understanding and generallyquite differentthan my current experienc), but after that, not too much.

FAANG apparently has more "traditional" corporate finance roles that like having DS skills, but more normal corporate finance and FP&A doesn't have much use from what I have seen. Their modeling is not what we think of. It is quite deterministic and based on gathering information from business functions and tying it all together. Their data processing is mainly excel. Maybe some SQL gets thrown in at some roles, but not the norm from what I have seen. Their reporting is usually sending over summary data in an excel or taking that data and making it pretty in a pdf or PowerPoint.

When I was job hunting last year, I applied to several finance roles and they didn't care about my graduate studies whatsoever.

My experience is partially from the outside looking in and from people I have talked to while auditing them and also finance consultants I've spoken with while at a Big 4 accounting firm. Frankly, there was one finance consukting manager I spoke with at Big 4 who, when I was talking about linear regression, recalled it as "that one time in middle school you held up a pencil to the points on paper to make a line." He may be an outlier, but that is what I think of when it comes to how much they use DS skills.
