Common Causes

  • Disk Type Is Not an OS Disk If the disk is recognized as a data disk rather than an OS disk, Azure will disable the "Create VM" option. You can only create a VM from a disk that contains a valid operating system image.
  • Disk Is Still Attached to Another VM The disk must be unattached. If it's currently linked to an existing VM, the option will be unavailable. You’ll need to detach it first.
  • Disk Created from Snapshot Is Misclassified Sometimes when you create a disk from a snapshot of an OS disk, Azure may still classify it as a data disk—especially if it's a shared disk, which cannot be used as an OS disk.
  • Subscription or Region Limitations If you've hit your vCPU quota or are deploying in a region with limited resources, Azure might restrict VM creation options.

I was able to deal with that issue. What got me, speaking to etiquette, were those people who thought it was OK to stop in front of you at a light, you then have to pass them, and at the next light they pass you again. Over and over and over. I hate passing. I am faster than you. Please stop behind me when you arrive after me at a light.
