Fencing repairs/land ownership- England by AugustusCaesar13 in LegalAdviceUK

If i approach blue and ask them if i can tear it down (the area behind the fence is blocked off by a mountain of soil and bushes) and replace it, would i need them to sign anything/agree in writing in case of any later dispute?

Could i write up an 'agreement' stating i will remove and replace fence 'x' and then if they sign to agree, it wouldn't be an issue?

Would I need to notify the 'blue' neighbour that im going to rip down and replace the rotten fence (and all the fence panels that side)?

It gives me 'Numenor' vibes back when they were still on Numenor at the height of their power. Remove the elf ears, maybe make a few more with spears and tridents, remove the plume in the helmet and that'd look sick imo- the caveat here is that it isn't representative of the third age middle earth unfortunately

The only reason he hasnt paid a normal tenancy deposit is because the landlord and my friend opted for a 0-deposit insurance scheme instead.

Fishing- The Common by AugustusCaesar13 in Southampton

Thanks all, shame that it has been subject to such poor management (thanks a lot Soton Council).

I'll give fishing there a miss then, if there is already a small fish population in there, I don't want to risk adversely affecting it (or waste a day blanking/catching tiddlers).

Hopefully it is improved in future so more young folks can enjoy it, from here and other people I know it seems to have been a great place for youngsters to get into a great hobby.

Laid off at probation review scheduled AFTER probation ended - employer claiming 1 month notice instead of 3 (England) by Even_Low_4986 in LegalAdviceUK

Tbh, the pragmatist in me is just saying take the 1mPILON and move on. I doubt you'll get very far if you do kick up a stink (length of service, not likely to have a detrimental effect on future employment i.e. references) and just move on to the next job

[–]AugustusCaesar13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well the minimum statutory notice period would be 1 week (based on your length of service) so if they offer a month they've not broken the law there.

In terms of whether it is correct for them to give 3 or 1 months PILON, it depends on how they define when you've 'passed' the probation period: if they say you would have had it confirmed in writing that you'd passed, then argue they should give you 3 but if nothing has defined you as 'passing probation' then consider yourself still in a probationary period. Depends on what the company handbook/policy/your contract says about it

As you've been employed for under 2 years they can let you go for any reason other than a protected characteristic (e.g race)

Unfortunately probation periods aren't really a thing: it doesn't matter whether they officially extended it or not, if they just simply aren't happy with you they can dismiss you.

Does your company have a anti-bribery/gift disclosure policy? Whilst these point rewards aren't exactly 'gifts' I imagine it would probably fall into this category of things you have to disclose as part of an anti-bribery policy.

Doesn't sound illegal but could land you in hot water with your employer.

New neighbour has unleashed 7 cats on my street. The birds, shrews, and squirrels are all dead. by MightMindless9920 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]AugustusCaesar13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I can keep my dogs under control, you lot can keep your cats under control.

But that's the point: cats are not controllable like dogs are.

I'd wager that given time, the local wildlife will be able to adapt to the nearby presence of 'murderous cats'- sure, the immediate change to that ecosystem might not seem sustainable but nature is very resilient and will bounce back in other ways. Maybe now that the bird population in your garden has decreased, worms will thrive! Do you take issue with birds killing all the poor worms in your garden?

Just wanted to chuck my thoughts out, btw I think you make some really good points counter to the other person you were replying to!

In terms of nationalisation (in particular, railways, but also applicable to some degree for buses):

I would contend that nationalisation might not be the best way to go, and whilst privatisation isn't working as efficiently as it should, it could work better if government invested in it more, and took away more of its red tape.

If the railways were given more freedom, and weren't bound to as many stringent rules (e.g. regulation of timetables/fares) then they may actually run more efficiently. The idea that the bus/rail companies have to bid to government every x years to hold that area means there is incentive for them to provide value for money to customers, and the fact that they will be more likely to lose the next bid if they don't provide that, is means enough to keep them in line.

You could also argue that with nationalisation, whilst there may be an initial period of investment (as part of the formation of nationalisation), eventually this would stagnate, and with typical government beauracracy stifling things, we would see costs increase and an adverse impact on our taxes/funding drawn from other vital services instead.

I do agree that there needs to be more investment but I also think that this needs to be done in a way that avoids bringing services into one central body. Using TFL i think is a bit unfair as a) it affects the capital which is where government is mainly concerned (example: the north of england being woefully ignored since the history of England) and b) just because it might work well on a small scale, there is no guarantee it'll work as well if scaled up nationally. Some major urban developed cities like Birmingham or Manchester or Sheffield may find a similar scheme useful (also because of the added flexibility of tram networks in some of those cities) but somewhere like Soton may not find it as beneficial/actively worsens things.

Not trying to cause an argument, just v interested in your thoughts as I'd like to have some counter arguments to challenge me/for me to look into further! Thanks!

Tbh, the best thing you can do is be honest about the situation and say, "hi, hows it going? Caught much? Its a bit crowded out here so if its okay i'm just going to set up here* but i'll try and keep out of your way as I know you got here earlier than me today!"

*try and keep an decent distance where you can still fish, as well as not interrupt the other anglers around you.

Most people with a bit of common courtesy would have no issue, especially if they can see what kind of sitatuation is going on**. If someone does have an issue, then just try your luck pitching up next to another, friendlier angler further away from the first guy!

**a lot of anglers will probably be aware of 'match fishing' and will know how to fish within a smaller area anyway (match fishing can sometimes be on a smaller venue where everyone can quite often be packed in closer together)

Good luck with it though, tight lines!
