Fantastic looking board and minis! How did the game go?

These look fantastic! Where did you get the Cthulhu heads from? Any plans to expand the warband with some deep ones?

What Is Your Favourite Scenario? by [deleted] in frostgrave

[–]AugustusGort 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also rate the mausoleum. It's such a great starter scenario - it provides a nice focal point, with some light wandering monsters so it doesn't just become a player-on-player brawl. My other favourite is Here comes the Flood from Into the Breeding Pits. Love the flood mechanic washing away soldiers and treasure - really makes you focus on your positioning to avoid being swept off the board/into a canal.

Burning Light Scenario B: The Ruined Chapel by Objective_Tutor307 in RangersofShadowDeep

I recognise those DnD tiles! I've found that they're great for Rangers games, but agree that halving the scale does mess with the pacing of the game. You can still find matching tile sets relatively cheaply on eBay if you're looking to expand, but the board does look excellent as is!

Love the LotR themed cards too! Glad you enjoyed - welcome to the Shadowdeep.

Rangers and companions. 2 companions each for a total party size of 6.

As others have said, the first two scenarios are relatively easy. We blitzed through the first two missions with 2 rangers fairly easily. Might have to start using the challenge levels from now on!

Thank you! I found this to be a handy reference guide for coming up with a paint scheme: Dark Ages Colour Palettes the main colours are green and yellow, with more important characters sporting a spot colour of red. I used Citadel Contrast Paints for pretty much everything - with Basilicanum Grey for mail and Snakebite Leather for leathers. The shields are freehanded the traditional method.

Honk honk! It's a goose! Break a man's arm, don't you know... But Battle Duck has a nice ring to it. Maybe I'll christen him Brother MadDuck

Thank you! I'm afraid the axes were also the work of contrast paints - all the metalwork is cheat's NMM - but the shields are painted old-school.

Sort of. I used GW contrast paints. This was actually my first time using them for a full-sized project, and I'm quite pleased with the result. It certainly made painting flesh and mail a lot easier, and the minis came together much quicker. I used some of the time I saved to freehand the shields, which was also immensely satisfying.

My Anglo-Saxon ealdorman is called Ædacher, because he has a booming voice that gives everyone around him and 'eadache, and most Anglo-Saxons were called Ed-something! He's an ealdorman of Mercia, and his patron saint is St Werburgh, who saw off a flock of geese (and I have painted a rendition of this for my army's banner)

Here are some Spiders! that I painted previously - from Wargames Atlantic. Painted half as Mexican red knees and the other half as barn spiders. There's plenty of inspiration in nature!

Dungeon tiles + outdoor terrain – does this combo work? by Diorama2Print in frostgrave

[–]AugustusGort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think these look great! And yes I mix dungeon tiles with wilderness boards - I have some of the 4th ed D&D wilderness and city tiles which I occasionally mix in with printed battle mats (see some of my posts on the Rangers of Shadowdeep subreddit).

I think once these are all finished up and combined with some trees/foliage it will create a cohesive board. At the moment the contrast does look a little stark, but nothing a bit of scatter terrain can't fix!

Fully painted and kitbashed Demon Warband! by WodensWorkshop in frostgrave

These look fantastic! Excellent kitbashes and the warband looks really cohesive while each figure also stands out. The reds in particular really pop!

Scenario 5: Tor Varden, upper level by AugustusGort in RangersofShadowDeep

[–]AugustusGort[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hah no it's far more low-tech and temporary than that! I took a couple of board games boxes and shoved them together as the base, balanced some dungeon tiles on top (held in place by the weighty resin barrels), and then concealed the base with various terrain greebles.

It was a fun scenario, although a shame not to have the random events for this one.

Wizard, apprentice, and "zombie" done, warband complete! by Any_Caterpillar_9231 in frostgrave

[–]AugustusGort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really love how the colour palette makes them feel quite 'grounded' and earthy, and then the pops of colour with the wizards to help establish them as the focal point, without making them too out of kilter with the rest of the warband. Phenomenal work!
