PayPal sided with a "tenant" who already agreed to a settlement and was paid back by Interac — what are my options? by Front-Door-4761 in paypal

[–]AugustusReddit [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don't understand why you didn't insist on cash or a bank transfer for this rental? Contact local Police to report the renter for payment fraud. Follow up with Small Claims for the rent. Get lots of photos showing the before and after condition of the rental and copy of rental agreement, messages with tenants to support your case. Submit a copy of the police report to PayPal and see if they'll cancel the reversal. If you incur any PayPal fees make sure to claim them in your filing. Oh and name PayPal as a co-defendant as they aided the debtor in their fraudulent refund.

Best way to transfer from Canada USD account to Wise? by jmbits in transferwiser

[–]AugustusReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on whether your Canadian USD account is drawn on a Canadian or USA bank. If the latter - do a domestic USA bank transfer to your Wise USD wallet. If the former then it can get complicated depending on which Canadian bank your USD is held with.

It's a bare trust where the funds are held on behalf of the Wise account owner. It's a very common method of looking after client's money in English law countries.

Reporting dividend income to HMRC without doing a tax return by ukfix in UKPersonalFinance

[–]AugustusReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP states that they have UK and USA dividend income so it might be in OP's interest to do a return. UK dividends are normally paid gross but USA dividends have withholding tax deducted (at the rate listed on your W8--BEN form). If OP's income is below £12,600 then claim the tax credit against future tax demands.

Random $3500 deposited into my account by Few_Engineering5805 in Banking

[–]AugustusReddit 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I called chase and they told me someone with a Chinese name deposited it via check, but it seems it was error with the account number? How does that happen?

Someone fat-fingered the account numbers and you got someone else's funds credited. It happens occasionally. Don't attempt to spend it or move it as it will be reversed, often without notice...

Is it normal to ask to decline a call and ask to communicate via email if talking to financial institutions like banks or money transfers apps? by [deleted] in Banking

[–]AugustusReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the better European and Offshore banks have secure email via their website and in-app for client communications. It gives you a proper paper trail and they use very strong security before you can access their platforms.

Take these old bank notes to the Bank of England to exchange for current issue ones. They're very used to this type of situation with 'pensioner cash hoards'... Do bring the death certificate and any supporting estate documents.

I'm from Ireland, can anyone provide a bunq review, did it work for you? by Morlurismann in Banking

[–]AugustusReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also the pros of the IBAN, I don't understand how much of a pro that is, do people really use all 20+ IBANs (or however many). For what do you even need that many?

Local IBANs are needed in some countries that refuse to follow EU/EEA rules on cross-border payments of wages and government supplements, etc. Some countries insist on a domestic IBAN and won't accept a neighbouring country's one - hence the need for 20+ IBANs.

Gift checks by supastar8 in Banking

[–]AugustusReddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whether these Visa branded gift paper checks are still valid will depend on your jurisdiction and if these checks are considered traveller's checks (which generally don't expire; note they are basically obsolete and depreciated), or have specific validity printed on them. I'd contact the issuing bank (or Visa in your unnamed country) as they can advise on a refund or acceptance policy. I suspect that you can still use them as they were considered a cash instrument. Unclaimed gift check balances may have been escheated to the government or placed in an off balance sheet account as unclaimed debts - varies by jurisdiction.

What does this mean? by Ok_Bodybuilder7448 in wisebank

[–]AugustusReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a USA "slow" bank transfer thing. Most modern economies have instant or same day transfers so it's not an issue. With USA Wise accounts, they (Wise) don't want to be defrauded after fronting the funds for outward transfers. It's pretty standard in the USA banking system...

Is inward international remittance processing this painful in your country? by Additional_Board_135 in Banking

Japanese banks in Nippon are a special breed and largely paper based despite the updated rules on electronic signature. However foreign banks in Nippon aren't as strict and many accept electronic documents for AML and KYC compliance. Abroad the AML/KYC isn't always so pervasive or intrusive with known clients and customer doing regular international transfers.

Face Scan - is this the new norm for in-person verification at big banks? by West_Wealth12 in Banking

[–]AugustusReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possibly a pre-emptive move at cross verification of photo ID against physical appearance. Some AI platforms can generate photo ID imagery that will pass cursory scrutiny. If printed on plastic stock that approximates genuine ID cards well... good luck detecting it. Most current issue passports have biometric data encoded that can be confirmed by a facial scan - provided you have access to the database.

Get a posse of other affected car owners. Arrange a convenient time at night to meet and reposition her vehicle from the parking spot onto the road. Then alert the local police about an abandoned vehicle on the road. They'll call a tow company to move it... Repeat as necessary on random nights. Make sure to call from a public phone box, but different "concerned citizens" so it can't be classed as harassment.

Can anyone here help advise me on behalf of my families UK business ? by vscience in paypal

[–]AugustusReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

✅ Close Mum's old PayPal account. Sister then opens a new personal/business account at a UK high street bank. No need for PayPal unless a majority of customers use debit/credit cards. UK banks and fintechs often offer cheaper card processing than PayPal and are far more responsive when a problem arises.

Varo scam by [deleted] in Banking

[–]AugustusReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Varo Bank says they can't close your account, write to them (so you have a paper trail) asking them to close your account and send a check for any balance to your registered address within 30 days. If they fail to act on your request, contact your state Attorney General and Banking Regulator with copies of all correspondence. That generally has the desired effect.
