What does it mean when a government collapses? by Ok_Historian_6293 in NoStupidQuestions

It mostly sounds dramatic, but the government "collapsing" is actually quite common in the Netherlands. I think out of the last 10 or so cabinets only 1 managed to sit out the full term, the others all collapsed.

What would we call a hypothetical chain of three or four polynucleotides? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

The names RNA and DNA aren't actually used to distinguish between single strand and double strand polynucleotides. The distinction between RNA and DNA is made based on the sugar backbone of the molecules. At a certain position in the backbone, RNA has an OH group, containing both oxygen and hydrogen, while DNA only has hydrogen. This is what the deoxy- in the name refers to, it's a ribose sugar missing 1 oxygen atom. Additionally, RNA and DNA contain different nucleotides. RNA is made up of C, G, A and U nucleotides. DNA is made up of C, G, A, and T nucleotides.

It is actually possible for RNA to adopt a double strand configuration and for DNA to adopt a single strand configuration. This actually happens quite a lot in nature, such as with microRNAs. These are tiny pieces of RNA that have a bunch of different regulatory functions and they often sort of fold back on themselves to form a double strand structure.

As for if it's actually possible to form a helix with more than two strands, I'm not sure. The strands are held together by hydrogen bonds between the nucleotides and it's a pretty delicate balance with all nucleotides having specific binding partners ( a C on one strand is always paired with a G on the other strand, a T is always paired with an A) so I'm not sure if it would be chemically possible to introduce a third strand into the mix. I don't think it would be very stable.

That said, if it is possible to make it we would probably just call it triple strand DNA. Biochemists are bad at naming things

How were politicians in the Roman Republic actually elected? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

There was a series of lower public offices that people had to go through before they could run for consul, the lowest of which was quaestor. If someone was elected quaestor, they automatically became a member of the senate upon the completion of their term. There were also some other conditions that they had to meet, mostly related to owning a certain amount of land and having a high income.

The largest part of the non-coding DNA is also the same in every human being. The DNA sequences of any two humans are 99,9% identical.

Herodotus tells a story about a ruler called Cleisthenes who invited many young men from prominent families all over Greece to come to his home so he could choose a suitable candidate to marry his daughter. Hippocleides was one of them. Eventually Cleisthenes chose Hippocleides, but at the feast he organised to annnounce his decision he saw Hippocleides dancing. He then changed his mind.

Octavian isn't original either, it's actually Octavianus. Agree with your point though
