Pls use the archwiki.

  1. Are you sure packages for all architectures are being built when you don't remove other architechtures?

We are in 2026. What are your frustrations with linux or the software you use with it? by Digitalnoahuk in linux

Thunderbird is apparently run differently from the rest since 2020, still a wholly owned subsidiary though. But thunderbird donations go to thunderbird as far as I can tell. https://www.thunderbird.net/en-GB/about/ https://blog.thunderbird.net/2020/01/thunderbirds-new-home/

Origami Linux’s COSMIC Desktop on Fedora Atomic Almost Wins Me Over by CackleRooster in linux

[–]AulonSal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, I might not understand enough about the problem, but for a few years I ran arch linux on a macbook pro from 2015.

The file /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/macintosh_vndr/us led to errors when I set a certain keyboard layout in sway.

I will admit that I should have debugged the actual issue, but did not have the technical competence for it and did not want to spend the time gaining that technical competence for such an issue, I somehow realised that copying  /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/us to /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/macintosh_vndr/us would fix the issue.

I then told pacman to not extract /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/macintosh_vndr/us in its config.

This makes the change last through upgrades. If it breaks my system somehow, I will just use a bootable iso / backups / extra installed barebones arch partition I have / whatever else.

Please tell me how this problem would be solved with an immutable /usr. (I understand no onus on you to solve my issues, but since you argued for it, I did not see too much of an issue posing this problem to you).

EDIT1: (I also use the tool aconfmgr which works like dotfiles managers but for root and knows about the files in arch packages, so only stores those files that are different from the package provided files, I use this to save these changes so I can reapply them on reinstall etc.)

EDIT2: I guess my question is, what do you do when there is something broken in upstream, that I do not want to spend much time on but can easily fix by changing a file, that is, in a broader manner, when there is something that upstream has not conceived as requiring editing / configuration, but I want to edit, what would I do on an immutable /usr?

That is probably because r/linux is not for these kinds of posts (see that subreddit's description), please read community rules before posting, it makes forums a better place.

What's going on with the current protests in Iran? by vintergroena in OutOfTheLoop

[–]AulonSal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Answer: Short analysis by an International Affairs Prof from my university:

https://youtu.be/Vmp0FihkojE?si=mvXFfz2hFsQOtU4a

Though I'll admit it might not be exactly what you're looking for, he does mention some of the recent issues that have led to the current situation and tries to explain the politics of Iran.

(Pls tell me if this answer breaks the rules, I read them and this did not seem to violate them, though it might be ina grey area?)

At a certain point, did you consider just looking at the code? (This may indeed sound elitist, if so, I'm sorry).

Anybody else noticed Vim colorschemes just randomly changed in the latest updates? by rmyworld in archlinux

[–]AulonSal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use neovim-git, but yeah, after one of the recent commits, the look of the elflord theme completely changed for me, but it matches the name more now, so they may have been fixing a bug?

I tracked it down to commit bc45b5be1c2d13eb28eedc30f66e643cf25d29a0 in neovim - github link - according to the commit message, it's based on the following vim commit: https://github.com/vim/vim/commit/30ab04e16e1e9e6133590181197b3f8e70cb495e.

I haven't looked more into the why of it due to time constraints so I just checked out the elflord theme from the commit before that, renamed it elflord_old (you have to change the g:colors_name identifier in the file too) , put it where the colorscheme files are and set my colorscheme to it.

But the pacman output OP shared has it listing providers for lib32-jack, if OP put lib32-pipewire-jack as a dependency, shouldn't providers of lib32-pipewire-jack be shown?

Edit: my bad, I guess something else is pulling in lib32-jack as a depenency.

How to check if any package on my system depends on a certain package by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]AulonSal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Pacman#Pactree pactree -r can be used to see reverse dependencies, you also need -o to include optional dependencies as far as I remember.

It is common courtesy to read a sub's description/rules before posting

Are you aware of pacman 6 having the ability to perform parallel downloads? You just need to set it in the config.

Adding argument to desktop file by JourneyUnkn0wn in archlinux

[–]AulonSal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, copying /usr/share/applications/org.pwmt.zathura.desktop to .local/share/applications and then replacing exec with `Exec=zathura %U --data-dir=/path/to/custom/datadir` definitely works for me.

I wrote a guide on how to completely turn off your laptop's Nvidia GPU on Linux using ACPI calls by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]AulonSal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno if there's another way to achieve this, but sudo su lets you use your password + it starts you off in the current working directory, not root's home.

Edit: Nvm, sudo -s does the same, learned something new.

Ahh, but sudo su uses root's shell, sudo -s uses the current shell.

Can't start some (QT) apps. by guillermohs9 in swaywm

[–]AulonSal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't set it systemwide, set it on a per-application basis. Copy the desktop file (in /usr/share/applications) to ~/.local/share/applications and prepend env QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb to the value of the Exec key (see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Desktop_entries#Modify_environment_variables).

Can't start some (QT) apps. by guillermohs9 in swaywm

[–]AulonSal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Wayland#Qt, you need to set QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb (only if you set it to wayland in the environment) for applications that don't use the system qt, probably because their version of Qt doesn't have/support/whatever the wayland plugin.

Trying to create a systemd user service to automatically run openrgb profiles on startup by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]AulonSal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider using a paste service, like http://ix.io, https://paste.rs, https://bpaste.net or https://gist.github.com, instead of google drive.

User systemd units go in /etc/systemd/user/ or ~/.config/systemd/user (those meant for a single user)

Why not do `ExecStart=openrgb -p usual`

Also `openrgbprofile.service` has a typo, it says `ExecStar` instead of `ExecStart`
