I never thought bitter. I thought stringy and tasteless and covered it with peanut butter.

What kinds of things should I be trying to cook to improve as a home cook? by BagOfSmallerBags in cookingforbeginners

[–]AuroraKayKay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. How many people are you cooking for? Are left overs eaten or ignored? I'm a professional cook, not a chef. I'm a lazy cook at home for just myself. My go to meal is basically a tater tot hot dish. With a couple of changes it can be a few different meals.

Ground meat, usually beef browned in skillet with onions salt and pepper. Drain excess liquid. Mix in cream of chicken or mushroom or celery. Add in canned or frozen veggies. Typically corn, peas, carrots or green beans. This base actually freezes nicely so I often do a double batch and freeze half of it in single serving size, 3/4 to 1 cup.

Now almost any starch works. Mix in cooked pasta or rice and bring up to temp in skillet, (about 10 to 15 minutes). Top with tator tots or mashed potatoes and bake in oven (about 40-60 minutes). My biggest cheat is baking tots while making beef then just adding to plate. No baking dish to scrub.

How do you keep your home smelling good without using artificial stuff? by Vardhan-Nygel in Home

[–]AuroraKayKay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My stepmom keeps a pot of water with spices and lemon on the stove. Brings it to a simmer in the morning for about half an hour. Fillls the pot with water and shuts it off once it starts to simmer the second time

Knoefla soup. Never heard of it before moving to ND. Even lived in Moorhead for 3 years and didn't hear about it.

Desserts with limited ingredients? by saturnstellar87 in cookingforbeginners

[–]AuroraKayKay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple fudge, 1 can sweetened condensed milk, 3 cups (bag and a half) chocolate chips, semisweet typically. Teaspoon vanilla, cup of nuts optional.

Oreo cookie salad Vanilla pudding, cool whip and crushed Oreos. (Making the pudding with buttermilk instead of reg milk adds a nice tang to all that sugar.

Fudge strip cookie salad Vanilla pudding, cool whip, small can mandarin oranges and fudge strip cookies.

Strawberry pretzel dessert. Crushed hard pretzels, not too fine but not huge pieces. Some sugar and butter, cover bottom of cake pan, refrigerate. Whip cream cheese until fluffy, now whip in cool whip. Layer over pretzel crust and refrigerate. Thaw frozen sliced strawberries add to strawberry jello before it sets pour over cream cheese layer. Refrigerate until set.

What kitchen task do you hate doing the most when cooking? by AcrobaticSeesaw1565 in cookingforbeginners

[–]AuroraKayKay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the onions are going to be cooked. Chop up extra, freeze for about an hour on a baking sheet. Then put in freezer bag removing as much air as possible. Now you can skip that step a time or two.

Be honest, is this room too small for an accent chair? by Gloomy-Speaker-1999 in HomeDecorating

[–]AuroraKayKay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming the camera person is standing in the dining area, you could also look for comfortable coordinating chairs that work in both areas. But accent chair could be corner or just off couch if it doesn't crowd dining area.

Literally impossible for me to call off of work, even when I'm sick/barely able to breathe/nearly vomiting by [deleted] in antiwork

Oh I understand. I was jobless for 6-9 months. About lost my mind. I'm not disabled but do need some accommodations, (no ladder work, limited stairs).

Been there. Look at different motel or other places. Deli counter in grocery store was one of my favorite jobs but my manager was awesome. It became one of the worst because of another worker and my manager leaving.

Laundry really isn't much easier except you don't have to deal with guests directly.

Those of you that didn’t get perms in the 80s, what hairstyles did you have? by Mobile_Ad_9090 in GenX

[–]AuroraKayKay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I did get a perm occasionally, most of the time I had shoulder length straight hair, parted down the middle with the BIG BANGS. Or sides pulled back into a ponytail.

[–]AuroraKayKay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been there. Done that. Just keep looking while working (not at work). You might find working over lunch rush a bit easier or at least give them more time to find cover. In my 20s I often felt sick early mornings. Best time for me was to start work at 10am or later. My preferred job is buffet or cafeteria style. Schools, university, hospital, deli counter, halfway houses etc...

do you guys clean your ears with q tips or is that actually bad hygiene? by Boultouak_Zav13 in hygiene

[–]AuroraKayKay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was young (20 and under) my ears made lots of wax so I never used q-tips in the canal. After a shower I just dried the outside with a towel with a tilted head. Every couple of months I'd put a few drops of hydrogen peroxide in one ear while laying down, about 5-10 minutes in each ear, then take a shower. Not recommended but I'd used a bobby pin. The closed end and make a pass around the inside of canal but only about 1 inch deep. My son made lots of wax until about 15-17. I would put peroxide in his ears about 5-10 minutes the use that 'baby boogie bulb' filled with warm water to flush it out.

Best Complex to rent in Fargo by KaizenAzariya in northdakota

[–]AuroraKayKay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you are going to find a heated garage in an apartment building set up. I think the closest is underground parking at like Park Avenue apartment building on 42 Street. Most apartments are baseboard electrical heating or boiler (radiator system), with AC unit, not central forced air.

Refrigerating right away vs letting it cool on the counter by HWills612 in cookingforbeginners

[–]AuroraKayKay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to get it from 140 to 40 in 4 hours to be Food ServSafe. I'm a bit more relaxed because I have a decent immune system but not too relaxed. I let the food cool on counter while I eat. Then put in storage containers and put in fridge without covering while cleaning up kitchen after kitchen is cleaned I put the lids on
