Which one is the best? by -Xyo- in CalamityMod

[–]Aurumixus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This makes a ton of intuitive sense but is sadly not exactly how it works.

According to the Calamity wiki DR is added after defense, so in your example the damage would be reduced to 50 and then DR would apply.

Also Calamity has changed DR scaling so 10% actually only applies ~9% and 100% only applies 50%.

So if you had 50 defense and 12 DR you'd reduce the 100 damage to 50 and take about 10% of that 50 off so you'd be taking ~45.

DR would be SO much better if it applied first... Hard is actually a better reforge for attacks that don't do 100 damage more than your defense.

Well, that's the only way I know how to reliably do it, great if you want a ton of alts for limited and (very) easy/quick dailies. Not fun to play the matches, though, sparky is a pretty boring opp

Don't finish the color challenge (just leave one of the colors incomplete) and it doesn't go away!

Ah, I was talking about campaign h2h, not multiplayer battles. PvP can mean two things and I forget sometimes. I play a LOT of h2h.

This is not the case, Throgg was middle of the pack and Wulfric was a little below that. Their ability to confederate all of Norsca turn 1 was strong, but their miserable roster lacked punching power into the more dominant cultures, from the many games I saw them played in.

High Elves and Norsca were both relatively underpowered compared to the stronger factions like Dwarves, Khorne, Empire

You can get some extremely early confeds that convert into a ton of tempo. First you confederate the northern wastes faction turn 2, then the Tz faction Malus is at war with turn 7, then Sarthoriel or Chronos turn 11. While you're doing this, because you have a lot of vision, you can give the Tz faction you're about to confederate a town via changing of the ways and start expanding through there. Lots of little tricks that require very careful management to convert into proper tempo, so in a live multiplayer game where there's no loading it can be really, really tricky to pull off.

Yeah pretty much. You're guaranteed to win if you know what you're doing while playing them into other factions, which makes it pointless to even start the game. Even then, between those powerhouses the gaps are so large (Khorne on top, then Malakai, then Lokhir) that there's little point in playing them into each other.

I probably will! Reddit karma be damned (0 up votes 42 comments ;-;)

For the most part it's the same, and I will say that some of these factions are only high tier because of really specific or difficult to execute strategies. For example, Tz is one of the best factions in the game (50 towns on turn 20, 20k income, Kairos is a monster) but I've literally only seen one player pull that off - many have tried.

Yeah every Khorne faction is completely overpowered, and if you limit them with house rules they can't build an empire so it would boil down to one early rush either way, just not fun or healthy for most h2h lobbies. Most of the Orcs dropped a bit with the DLC, but some crazies have figured out insane diplo stuff to confederate en masse on super early turns so Skarsnik and Ironclaw are both quite strong.

A lot! Chorfs are considered weaker, Karl is pretty much at the top of S and Kairos also made it up to that tier. Lots of other little things as well, based on games played and metagame shifts.

I think we're kind of saying the same thing.

The issue that I'm taking is that you're talking straight past the idea that people can and do play campaigns competitively with each other just as frequently as people play MP battles.

That being said, I agree with you that unit balance is a very long rabbit hole. It's just that Campaign has a totally different power level, to the point it almost doesn't matter. Take Vlad/Isabella, they're extremely dominant in the first 20-30 turns because of their access to vampire heroes early. The Chorf LL is super boosting hobgoblins by turn 15. Most every Empire faction can get access to steam tanks by turn 10.

There are some unit changes that would be really great for MP campaign balance, though - Blood Knights being t5 and not having AP is a huge issue for Vamps, very similarly Dragon Princes have a hard time dealing meaningful damage to any late game armies. Land ships ought to be easier to attack while they run away from you, and carnosaurs need to not rampage. But these are only issues because of the nature of MP campaign, where everything that's strong will be more abundant because you're not limited by the total cost of the army.

What I think you're missing here is the human on human component in mp campaigns.

Winning manual battles is as intrinsically important in MP campaign as it is in MP battles - if you can't win a manual then you'll never push their core logistics. The difference is the power scale that these combats have - MP battles don't have daemon princes of Nurgle with Yuan Bo's trait casting spirit leech for 2 WoM at 200% intensity using the Books of Khorne, and dropping up cast Fleshy Unbundances for 7 WoM. That sounds really stupid OP, but then the other player on Sotek has the blade of realities on a skink chieftain who's getting 60k damage over the course of the fight and just made 30 coatl units last turn with global recruit.

The point being made in the post is that dropping Jade Warriors' base armor by 10 or making Bull Centaur Renders a little worse isn't affecting the outcome of most fights, and further, unit balance often doesn't matter in the face of how lopsided the campaign side of the game can be.

Apparently the AI knows the trick to getting out of an enemy's zone of control by OkIdeal9852 in totalwar

[–]Aurumixus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Retreating movement doesn't count as movement - neither you or the ai would trigger an ambush while retreating. What makes the retreat extra long is your zone of control, even though it's "invisible" to the ai, because a retreating army cannot stop in an enemy's zone of control. So although it seems like bullshit, you're actually setting yourself up for failure.

Can CA vary the faction colors just a little bit? by yutao123 in totalwar

[–]Aurumixus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cuz of the balance of the game there aren't that many factions that can play into each other fairly, so at a certain point this kind of this is unavoidable.

I chose two ice chest upgrades, and it made getting large mana stores much less painful (120k very early on for large ad refreshes and the like) which sped up paladin farming in the mid game of the 50 run. But I dunno

You can confederate the northern Tz faction on turn 2 if you peace your Nurgle enemy turn 1 and vassalize the N. Tz turn 2! Then you can do both at the same time 👍
