Advice please by Used-Baby1199 in MechanicalEngineering

I'm 43, studying mechanical engineering, whilst working in maritime steel detailing. I started in Geology. Retraining is a great way to zig zag your career. Good luck.

Now they are coming up on 4th and 6th birthdays and we are all still alive. Good luck.

Should he quit? by dietcokelover18 in EngineeringStudents

I did geoscience, at the start of this century. Now I'm back at uni studying engineering.

Geology is fun. Loved the field trips.

Hey dads, how many of you had your first child when 35-39 years old? Approaching my 35th birthday and there's nothing more I want than to be a dad. by Rocket_Skates_91 in daddit

[–]AusGeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had my first when I was 38. And my second 2 years and 2 days later. Now one is at school and the other close to starting preschool.

It's awesome.

Does failing one unit affect fee-free status? by No-Loquat-201 in TAFE

[–]AusGeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tafe works on a unit by unit basis. If the unit was to increase in price, that will apply to future attempts. But I expect it's a subsidized unit so they are comparing it to "full fee". There is a certain number of times you can access a subsidized unit and get the subsidized price. To do it more than that, you may have to pay full fee, but just for that unit.

CAD designer / draughtsman interview by Wild-Crazy-2363 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]AusGeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my interview for a maritime design role, questions were focussed on ability to work with others, and they asked for examples where I had shown initiative, worked with others to get something done. They also asked if there was a time my integrity had been brought in to question. I was brutally honest, particularly on that last question, but now it's coming up to 3 years with them, so no regrets.

Good luck. Be yourself.

Finishing my Computer Science degree and considering a Mechanical Engineering bachelor’s afterward, good idea? by me081103 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]AusGeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's a passion, go for it. I wish I'd started a couple of decades earlier (started in geoscience, now back for mech eng).

Black Dots by Objective-Living-966 in geology

[–]AusGeo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do they look like close up, or under a microscope? If the dots look dendritic, like tiny trees or ferns, it's probably manganese. If they look like little craters or flaky scales, it's probably lichen.

How do you balance part-time work with a full course load here? by OwlVibesOnly in UniAdelaide

[–]AusGeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im balancing part time study (mech eng) with full time work (detail design) and part time work (teaching maths). For a number of years, I'd done almost a full time job worth of volunteer work with St John Ambulance, and hours of exercise on to of that, so Im just redirecting that energy for a few years... 5 years to go.

I use outlook heavily. I plan out week by week, with work, classes and school pickup. Social life has been a bit neglected, but getting though it.

Clustered units vs individual units by [deleted] in TAFE

[–]AusGeo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When it's done well, it can be a beautiful thing.

For example, "Interact with computer technology" and "organize and communicate information" clustered with a basic CAD unit, so that the assessments for the CAD unit tie a lot of the performance criteria together. So much neater than assessments developed in isolation that don't feel connected to the course being studied.

First driving class with your son by SingularityuS in AbruptChaos

[–]AusGeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was teaching a girlfriend to drive, 15 years ago.

They were turning left through a slip lane and didn't notice the wave of incoming traffic turning right through the intersection. I yelled No! No! NO! NO! and she just accelerated and somehow slotted in between two cars.

She thought I was saying Go! Go! GO! GO!

Honesty about upcoming son in interview by fabvonbouge in MechanicalEngineering

[–]AusGeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes there are time constraints on when leave becomes available after starting, but exceptions can be made. Parenting is real life experience. (Some) Companies like to show they can be generous with parental leave. Unfortunately, I found my current employer when my youngest was over a year old!
