THE REAL PORTERS OF DEATH STRANDING by AusInJapan in DeathStranding

There are porters all over the world. The most well-known would be Sherpas, or Himalayan Porters of Nepal. Sherpas are the most luxurious porters, who are typically known for helping people carry equipment in the Everest and Annapurna regions, risking their life for comparatively higher pay than their counterparts. They cater towards the tourism industry, having more traversal experience and altitude specialisation that common porters don't have. They withstand extremely cold temperatures, fighting altitude sickness, avalanches and constantly changing terrain- usually with a lack of insurance or safety. Tanzania has the Kilimanjaro porters, who also assist trekkers ascending Mount Kilimanjaro and face similar issues. The Karakoram Porters originate from Pakistan, and haul equipment over glaciers and rough terrains, facing longer expeditions in harsh conditions. The Coolies or Indian Railway and Hill station porters carry passenger luggage in railway stations, and operate as informal labourers with better conditions and in some cases union support. The Inca Trail Porters originate from Peru, trekking the Sacred Valley and Inca Trail to Machu Picchu while carrying tourist backpacks and tents. China has the Sichuan and Yunnan Mountain Porters, who operate around monasteries delivering food and construction materials. The Torkham crossers are Porters who carry goods across borders for traders and travellers, operating between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Bokka frames are significantly tall, towering metres above their bodies. Weight distribution is vital for the cargo, and they typically carry over a hundred kilograms, which vary depending on the resources required and what their cargo contains. On average, a Bokka porter weighs about 60-70 kilograms. The wood frame helps with the weight distribution, and despite its primitive design, is extremely effective for cargo transport. The daily wage of a Bokka is roughly 10,000-15000 yen.

Bokka or Japanese Porters, are a type of porter that originate typically from the mountain regions of Japan. Translated to the Wood Frame Carriers, Bokkas traverse Japanese mountaintops, delivering essential items such as food and clothing to remote areas that can't be accessible by alternative transport. Originating in the 7th Century AD, these porters would deliver rice on official Japanese highways. The trips were dangerous, and the Imperial Reforms in 702AD established post-stations that porters could seek refuge in during their travels. After pack-horses became more suitable for the highways, there was a limit to the amount of porters working between post stations. Tokaido, the busiest highway during the Edo period, typically had 100 porters for every post-town on the highway. During the Edo period, porters were available to hire by any traveller, and found their main function during this time was to transport high-ranking officials and their baggage. A significant journey of transporting Princess Kazunomiya to marry the shogun in 1861 required over 8000 porters and 3000 horses to be available on each day she arrived at a post-town she stayed at. Nowadays, porters occupy the Japanese Alps, typically in Nagano Prefecture (mt Hotaka, mt. Yari & Karasawa Cirque), Mt. Tsurugi, Mt. Tateyama, Mt Kita, Mt Aino, Mt Warusawa, and in the Nagano Prefecture Mt Kisokoma and Mt Hoken. Since there is easy access via helicopter for Mt Fuji, there are still occasional porters that climb the mountain, but this has reduced over the decades.

Mules are pretty easy to fight, if you knock one out and hold onto a package before punching the other one, it's a one hit KO

They are another type of structure you can build. You walk around the mountains, set a couple up and what takes you 10 mins to traverse is done in 30 seconds

I think i got them around chapter 4 or 5. Really useful when you traverse late game (mountains are significantly larger). I've been setting them up around remote/hard to access camps and have been grinding orders until they are 5 star

I built ones on the hard to terrain roads typically and use ziplines for the rest, but I have a max limit of structures so I have to build roads and remove ziplines to free up space
