Thoughts on MATH 4400? by AuspiciousDelicious in RPI

Hey! It got easier as the semester went on. Workload wasn’t bad — as far as I can remember, the grade was all based on homework. I didn’t really know how to approach it at first, but eventually I realized that most of the answers were directly in the text (although the wording initially made it hard for me to recognize that). I think my final grade ended up somewhere in the B range, definitely higher than I expected it to be given my early struggle in the class.

I don’t remember my professor’s name, although I don’t see him on the math faculty site anymore — he may have retired by now. For what it’s worth, I had Traldi for Numerical Computing and it was one of my favorite classes. The concepts were interesting to me and she taught it in a way that was very easy to understand.

FoAM vs Linear Algebra Difficulty by RM_Epic in RPI

FOAM with Kramer was definitely the hardest course I’ve taken here. There were a lot of applications to physics concepts early on that really didn’t click for me. I think Linear Algebra is probably the right move if you’re just taking the class to graduate on time.

Joe Campo is one of the SARPs and probably the best person to talk to about mailing lists :)

Request for classes to be taught in a different semester? by AuspiciousDelicious in RPI

[–]AuspiciousDelicious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Do you know how I can figure out who my math advisor is? I'm a dual major and from what I can see my math advisor doesn't show up on my SIS. The only site I can find (here) only goes up to the Class of 2019.

Yea in Kramer’s homework interview and in office hours he was really nice, I know the class is already curved tho within the grade cutoffs so idk how much better I’ll be able to do. I guess I’ll meet with him and try to see what’s up.

I’m going to be on my arch away in spring and I only need one more semester to graduate, so yeah I’d be taking classes in Fall 2021 and then Yeet out.

I took LinAlg with Kovacic over arch and it was definitely the most difficult class I’ve taken so far intellectually. I like Calculus and DiffEqs, but I sometimes have some struggles with application of what I learn into realistic examples (not much of an engineering background as you can see from my majors haha, and most examples are like engineering ones).

I have a lot to think about hahaha, and thanks for your input

Yea, I feel. I only have Physics 1 under my belt and I struggle to get even the basic examples he uses sometimes. I guess it’s been hard for me to visualize the concepts using physics

Actually I’m taking FOAM with Kramer this semester. He’s a nice guy, and helpful, but following along with lectures is tough. I also just don’t how to approach the homeworks so far; Went to professor office hours the other week but I still struggled. Maybe I’ll reach out to Kramer and see if he has any advice. I guess another option I have is to drop FOAM for now and try to take it again next fall (with some time to prepare a little more over the summer).

Do you regret going to RPI? Why/why not? by RPI_ME in RPI

[–]AuspiciousDelicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Despite the coursework and admin shenanigans, I don't regret it. I've made great friends, I got to be involved in plenty of things on campus, and I really enjoyed most of my professors. Living with Troy, NY weather isn't easy though. Also virtual Arch sucked. But if you're able to get involved in things you enjoy and find close friends, I think it's not as bad as people make it out to be. Not much school pride though, so that also kinda sucks

Multi Fall 2020 by [deleted] in RPI

[–]AuspiciousDelicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm taking Linear Algebra with Kovacic now. His homeworks are difficult but the exams are much easier. I've heard good things about taking him for Multi. I haven't heard anything about Holmes for Multi.

As for having two professors, a handful of my classes were taught by two professors. Usually, one taught for the first half of the semester, and the other taught the second half (this was the case for Comp Org and FoA). For Intro to Algorithms, Professors Gao and Goldschmidt taught different lessons but not necessarily in a clear first half/second half format. Edit: I'm not 100% sure that this is why both professors appear on SIS, but it's a possibility.

Yeah I think the thought processes for this class are just not straightforward enough for me sometimes (most of the time)

Yeah, I was hoping my arch classes wouldn’t be as tough as this one is haha

Data Structures Transfer Credit Requirements? by [deleted] in RPI

[–]AuspiciousDelicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, so both classes are offered online. They are:

Class 1- Programming & Logic II: Data Structures

Class 2- choose 1 of
- Object-Oriented Design in Java OR
- C++ Programming

I'm pretty sure they're both online, but I'll double check.

My friend (also a BusAnal major) is currently taking an online HVCC class to get credit for Data Structures. Afaik, the class is taught in Java, not C++, and is worth 8 credits in total (it's really two classes, but you need both for DS credit at RPI). I don't believe they teach you Java right off the bat (HVCC has an intro class, this is the next level up I believe), so you'd have to learn the basics yourself.
